Sony SoundForge Pro Multichannel Editing Software (Windows)
Precise event-based editing, integrated disc-at-once CD burning, musical instrument file processing, and pristine audio conversion and time stretching.
Sound:
It's very good. The better the interface or input board the better, obviously, but this software has made the most of any of them.
Feature:
I know -- it's Windows-only software, two tracks only. But for huge projects, splitting up work over multiple workstations, even if I record on Mac and burn the eventual discs on Macs, it's still been worth my time and sanity to bring mono or two-track stuff across platforms to do the bulk of the work in Sound Forge.
Quality:
Sound Forge is an armored tank that I've used to travel through the last ten years. I can think of no software, Windows or Mac, that I've used in my work that was as consistently uncrashable and reliable. When you're paying LA-area voice talent $125.00 an hour and up, you'll lose your shirt (or job, as applicable) by losing time, tracks or work. With Sound Forge, I never have.
Value:
Reasonable priced.
Manufacturer Support:
This company themselves as been great, although they had been over-extended just trying to develop too amny products over too broad a front, and conseqently had been strapped for cash. Now that Sony has them, they've left those people in place (and, well, I don't think Sony will be going broke soon...)
The Wow Factor:
People who've never used it just stare at you when you talk about it. People who have used it nod knowingly.
Overall:
I'm glad Sony bought it and it bringing it back to the forefront.

Sound:
Sound Quality is excellent.
Feature:
Now that it has VST support it's unsurpassable for finalizing your tracks.
Ease of Use:
It couldn't be simpler. The interface is very logical.
Quality:
It's virtually uncrashable.
Value:
This is professional quality software, the price is in line with other programs.
Manufacturer Support:
I've never needed any support with this program.
The Wow Factor:
It isn't all that sparkly but does what it is designed to do and does it remarkably well.
Overall:
This program performs and if you have the skills to make it perform you won't be disappointed. If you don't know what you're doing... well you might get lucky... but this program has the capability.

Sound:
It has great sound features for stereo 2 track wave editing. You can pretty much do anything at any samplerate. Plugins included are functional but a bit dated in some respects, for this money you can't expect UAD-1 or Waves bundle quality plug-ins. Works well however with my 3rd party VST plug-ins.
Feature:
Well, you can't multi-track with it and 3rd party VST/DX effects enhance the experience at extra cost but it has a bundle of features, wave editing, cross fades, markers, resampling, batch processing, support of DX and VST fx, flash import, and now included with CD Architect 5, the best audio CD burning program I've ever used.
Ease of Use:
Interface is quite simple, docking windows for customizing layouts is good.
Quality:
Great box, nice 'Getting Started' manual, easy registration, CD's included for soundforge, cd architect and noise reduction 2.0. WOuld have had 10 if the manual had been the full operating manual as opposed to a 'getting started' guide but .pdf files come with full manual on installation CD.
Value:
I got this software on an educational discount, so it was especially good value. the full retail price of 400 plus dollars is steep, but many retailers are selling this product for 275 or less dollars right now which is reasonable.
Manufacturer Support:
Sony have decent support, telephone support or internet support with forums.
The Wow Factor:
Sexy red glossy box. Great software. CD Architect included. Industry renowned product.
Overall:
After using this product for 4 months, I would not be without it. It offers most of the functionality of a top grade wave editor like Wavelab (except montage and surround sound), but costs considerably less. Easy to use, includes some great tools, great for mastering CD mixes and then opening files in CD Architect, the best burning app I've ever used.
Sound:
if you have a problem with this software, it is the driver of your audio gear or your own headspace and timing that is in error.
Easiest and best audio software I have ever used and I have used them all in 20 plus years of doing audio. It is a digital two track recorder and just as stable as I have found. It has never once crashed on me, and if my system crashed, it remembered the files I was working on and pops them right back into Soundforge, once I reboot.
It is never file reversion incompatible. I still load files from back when I was mixing tracks 10 years ago.
It has gotten consistently better, now doing video.
It has worked with every single soundcard I have ever thrown at it, except MOTU, but that was MOTU's bad driver fault, not Soundforge's.
It now comes with Izotope as standard add on. What more could you ask for?
I run both iMac and PC, and I use PC just because Cubase 4.1 and Soundforge or so stable on them.
Feature:
Installation disk
Ease of Use:
You can fire it up, and start working without cracking the manual.
But, it goes so deep it can have your head spinning, if you want.
Quality:
I used this on my PC when I was at war in Iraq, and it still ran fine, even after all the dust and dirt and the PC screen cracking. If I plug in an external monitor, the damned program still runs!
I don't know if that is a testament to Compaq Presario's or Soundforge software or a combination of both, but there you have it.
Value:
They don't need to ask less or more for this. It is right where it should be at 299 and you get what you pay for.
Manufacturer Support:
I remember the boys at Sonic Foundy doing a demo of it back in '96 at my local music store when I was in Virginia. They were great guys, who made a great product, and I hope when Sony bought them out, they all bought retirement homes in Baruba, because this is one software product that lived up to the hype, and there aren't many out there, that can live up to the hype. SF did.
The Wow Factor:
I am sold on this forever and will never switch audio editors. I hear these Logic guys go on and on and on about how great Logic is. Have you ever tried to edit your tracks in that Piece of Cr$#p editor on that program? Hence, the reason I don't master my tracks on a Mac. Soundoforge is PC, only.
Overall:
Some look prettier, but nothing comes close to the simplicity and work horse stability of Sonic Foundry's (give credit where credit is due) Soundforge. Those code crackers made it and they deserve the credit.
