Sound:
So I've noticed a real lack of reviews on this product so I thought I'd give people a hands on experience with the Samson 612M powered floor monitor. First off, this monitor is beautiful sounding. It has a rich full tone throughout all frequencies, and is by far the best sounding speaker in my collection. I'm using it as a monitor for my vocals in a Five piece heavy rock band. It makes my voice sound full and clear, and thats what I wanted.
Feature:
The monitor is very limited as far as connections go. It has only one input wich is XLR, a passthrough XLR connection, and gain, bass, treble knobs. I wanted to plug my microphone directly to the unit and then use the passthrough to connect to my mixer, so this has the connections I required. However most monitor applications may need a 1/4" input wich would require an adapter. Although the sound is great from this monitor, some midrange control would have been nice also.
Ease of Use:
This is very easy to use, connections are simple and as I said before it sounds amazing.
Quality:
The product is sturdy and very nice looking. The first one I received was defective, so I do have some concerns about the internal components failing over time, but my replacement is holding up nicely so far.
Value:
I think the price is great on this unit, and it is very hard to find a powered wedge that looks this nice for the money.
Manufacturer Support:
not used so far.
The Wow Factor:
This thing is super nice looking, has a good angle to it, and makes the band look professional.
Overall:
So even though this speaker Sounds great, looks great, and is a great price, my biggest gripe is about the volume of the unit. This thing is not loud at all. Even though it is advertised as having 300 Watts RMS, you would think that it only is pushing about half that. I tried several things to get the volume higher. I cranked the gain knobs as well as both EQ knobs up all the way, and still struggled to hear it over my drummer. Put it this way, I was able to put it on full blast and could stand 2 feet away from the woofer without feedback. Now this is with the Mic plugged directly into the XLR jack. I am thinking that perhaps if I can use a small mixer to increase my gain before it hits the speaker it might help, but I have a feeling that I will clip the unit If I do so. I am using a set of Behringer b412dsp's as my mains, and they are rated at 400 watts, but have probably 4 times the volume this thing has. Highly disappointing. These would be great for an acoustic set or spoken word but just don't cut it in my rock band. We don't have a terribly loud stage volume either, just loud enough to mix with the drums, but the drums seem to drowned out any volume I can get out of this. I expected much more out of 300 watts.
