Rocktron Silver Dragon Customer Review

I expect to be satisfied with this for quite a while, and could try changing tubes when I am not.
Sound
The sound of this product goes with my style of music, and I like the sound quality with my tube stack. The sound responds wonderfully to my playing and is really expressive when used with my Boss SD-1. The sound helps me achieve a black metal, thrash, or punk tone, whatever I am looking for, and if I turn off the slayer and sd-1, I can get a nice breakup tone. The product sounds good by itself, but I have to adjust my mids and presence a bit to get a proper tone. With the SD-1, it gives a midboost. I use it with my Rocktron Rampage, which has a tone of distortion and tonal variety with the awaken channel, but I have the distortion no more then 2, and also a Metal Planet from Rocktron. I use the SD-1 with it as an overdrive, but sometimes when I want a really super gainy, feedbacky tone, I'll use the slayer mode with the intensity at about 1.5-3 as opposed to 3-5. Different settings sound good, but I wouldn't go extreme with the controls as they seem to go in addition to what's already there, such as the tone controls. I'd rely more on the awaken channel as opposed to the slayer channel, meaning most of the distortion is from the tube (Fire at about 6-8).
Features
It included a 13-volt adapter. The most useful features are the distortion and tone controls, though they don't sound very well past 6, but they are very expansive. Least useful, for me, is the Breath control. Generally, I use a lot of tube distortion and only at most about half of the ss distortion. It has a little effect at half, but more of an effect if I had the tube dist at 4 or so and the ss at 6-8. I wish it had a mid control, somewhat, but I use the SD-1 and it gets me the black metal sound I am looking for, but I don't mind.
Ease of Use
Very easy to get good sounds, and I can get a few different sounds with such a small range in the tone controls. This product integrates well with the others since the SD-1 is a pretty transparent (but not the most transparent) OD, and the others are made by rocktron. The manual is clear.
Quality
Seems dependable and well made like all Rocktron products.
Value
It was worth the price compared to other products.
Manufacturer Support
I've never dealt with their customer service.
The Wow Factor
I like the crunch/high gain dual distortion design of the pedal and it's tone.

"Very UNIQUE SOUND!"

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars

It is different for sure so hopefully will become a collectible?
Sound
This design is awesome and simple. Unfortunately, anything over 6 turns the sound into static or mud! But if you keep it under control it can really make your sound. I have thought of swapping the tube out to try and get more out of the controls but as I said above keep it under 6 and you'll get a good sound even with the stock tube.
Features
Pretty simple layout. One thing that is wrong with it! Well in order to use the Slayer side you must activate the awaken side. So basically you get a double distortion. Kind of foolish IMHO as it limits the possibilities. But it does have a very UNIQUE sound if kept below 6 on the controls! I found LESS is BETTER!
Quality
Great quality and built like a tank! I do wish it could be used individually rather than stacked.
The Wow Factor
Cool SILVER!

"Dissappointment"

Overall: 0.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)

read above^^
Sound
Harsh, whiny distortion. very unpleasant. the awaken channel is weak and needs a kick in the ass and the slayer(what a disgrace to the name) channel is sloppy. very unclear distortion. terribly dissappointed.
Features
the reason i gave it an 8 on features is that though it sounds bad, the concept is a good one. The awaken channel (if it sounded good) would make an excellent overdrive and then the slayer channel (if it sounded good) could be used as full on distortion. unfortunately rocktron missed its mark. good control layout. (though they are weak and have stupid names).
Ease of Use
it is confusing when you first look at it, because all the eq's and knobs have stupid names. once you figure out what everything means, then its on to figuring out whether u want overdrive or distortion. if u choose overdrive, then ur done and left with a weak tone and only treb and bass knobs to compensate. if u want distortion, you've got more issues. you must first select how much of each channel you want (because they blend rather then being seperate) then dial in what i believe is a presence knob. its not for someone who is new to pedals or guitar, unlike myself. it took me about 10 minutes to get it to sound its best, which is terrible, but if ur a n00b it will take u much longer and u may never find the best sound.
Quality
plain and simple, its a distortion pedal that sounds bad. built like a tank, sounds like a cheap danelectro pedal.
Value
its a bad value becaue it sounds bad and is not as good as distortion pedals costing much less. namely the digitech metal master, which i have and love 100 times more tehn the dragon, and itll run you about 80 bux brand new. be forwarned, if u buy the metal master you need a noise gate, it is very noisy if not tamed.
Manufacturer Support
never dealt with rocktron before.
The Wow Factor
It has great appeal because of the concept. It grabbed my attention because it is tube and is relatively cheap. way to sneak this one by us Rocktron, you almost had me going there for a minute.
