The vs-890 is a good investment if you are a songwriter like myself. It's very easy to use, and capable of making a really great sounding recording if you know what your doing.
You can use it for more than just recording as well. I have used it as a PA mixer for live shows. It works great, especially for adding effects to your instruments and vocals.

Great machine for the money. My first experience with digital recording, and i didn't find it nearly as hard to figure out as i had heard. Fantastic sound, great effects, well layed out, easy to use. Buy it at this price before they're all gone!

Great sonic "transparency" in 24 bit VSR mode. It has a decent amount of recording time, but you are limited to 1 Gig partitions on the HD. This translates to Aprox. 40 minutes in 24 bit / 8 tracks, per partition (1 Gig). ( 80 minutes for 4 tracks, ect.)Most units come with a 6 Gig HD. This is plenty of time for most projects.

Upsides - Great sound in any recording mode.
Portable, Easy Set-Up, Built in effects, )including Guitar Distortion). 128 Virtual Tracks, Undo Function (if you accedentily press record in the middle of a song, you just press UNDO and the song returns to it's previous state.)

Downsides - only 6 analog inputs, although they are balanced 1/4 inch plugs. Two chanels are accessable Via S/pdif or track bouncing.
1 Gig HD Partition Limit.

zZounds has verified that this customer bought this product from us.
This is a very flexible and capable machine. It has a depth of features beyond those most home recordists will need. This makes it a bit difficult to learn. But the results are well worth the effort. I do wish Roland had made the recorder compatible with all external CD burners. Having to use only the Roland adds considerable expense. Two manuals are provided that seem to duplicate one another to a large degree. There is no indication of which manual should be read first, etc. Also, these manuals could use some proof-reading. But they are pretty clear.

I have owned this model for a year now and it took about 6 months to learn every detailed operation of the system. The sound is great, especially with the effects. This machine is more for smoother, layered music, rather than typical rock stuff. The main drawback is the eight tracks, I'd rather have more to work with and not deal with bouncing and v-tracking. This is only because I use alot of effects in my work. Overall though, you can make great sounding pieces on this machine. And the fact that the price is coming down too is very cool. Buy this if you want high-quality digital recording that can go with you anywhere.
