The TR-8 is a super smooth product. It really is very simple to learn and create beats. I never once touched the manual to this baby, its just so user friendly you can just focus on the music and the sound quality of your tr8. The slider knobs on the TR8 are amazing, feel reel smooth. It works with ableton great. I sync up my RC300 and make some sweet loops. people who are campaigning that its digital, need to realize we are in the digital age.

This is my first sequence based machine. Roland has an outstanding reputation for making products that not only you can program, but musician friendly (use you skills) interface. The learning curve is not as bad as I had anticipated, and this machine plays easily and well with others. Big kick sounds, and full control on what sounds you want to use. Updating firmware, and tutorials are all over YouTube. So it's not hard to get started. Love the sounds, diversity, and well built knobs, a perfect interface for performance based writing.

"retro drum machine from the future."

Roland has really bought back the original feel and sound of the 808 and 909 drum machines in a modern instrument. The new features and controls are overall smoother and straightforward than its namesake predecessor. Each knob and fader moves smoothly and really gives you a realistic analog feel and response when moving them in real time while the drum patterns are playing. Recording parts while it plays makes it feel like a real performance tool instead of a run of the mill drum machine. The bright lights flashing in the dark make you feel like your using a retro machine from the future. I gave it a full run through with a short performance I recorded. I utilized the Scatter function (which is probably the coolest function of this device) to create noise and ambience. Also, playing over the pattern I selected, I was able to change the drum set of sounds and instruments while it was playing. Then using the depth and scatter functions I was basically talking to Aliens. Overall, I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a new production tool for industrial, electronic, noise, rap, etc. Roland wins again. (I had no issues with the device/no reason to contact Roland but I hear good things about their service)

"ROLAND TR-8"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Written by one of our gear experts!
Roland TR-8 is a powerful drum machine. The emulations of the 808 and 909 are top notch, and the additional features not found in the originals are very useful. It has all the features one would want from a drum machine/step sequencer. All of the faders and knobs are high quality and it feels very well built in general. In trying to keep it close to the original Roland does not include an LCD screen with menu options available to change the settings. This can get a little tricky, as it is not readily apparent how to do some of the things that this machine was capable of. It took me a while to figure out how to assign individual drums to the assignable outputs and assign reverb/delay to individual drums. I understand why Roland made it this way, but it can be a little difficult.

The TR-8 rhythm performer is a beast, particularly when you add the 7x7 expansion. Or has become all the drum machine I will ever need. My only gripe is the lack of automation record, but all that can be done in the daw so no biggie!

"Missed Opportunity"

Although the concept is great, the execution is poor. The build quality, look and feel are great, but there's so much missing, that it doesn't really matter. Where are the separate outputs for individual drums, like the original machines had? This was one of the most important features, so you could process each drum as needed, either while tracking or mixing. And where is a Trigger Output? That was also on the original machines, and is essential for interfacing with other analog synths. Without these features, this thing is really no better than the software emulations, which are super cheep and more useful in today's DAW workflow. So if you're just looking for the "sound" of 808s and 909s, then that's where to go. It's a real mystery how Roland could leave these features out.
