This machine is a great value. Lots of bang for the buck. Though I'm reluctant to say anything negative, I will say a few things, but this has more to do with "getting what you pay for" than a slam on the device itself. Having said that ... sometimes I wish I had gone the next step and spent a little more money.

This machine offers a great variety of sounds and they are very close to live drums and percussion.
Indicator lights are fairly easy to see indoors and in low light situations, however, outside and during live performances in daylight, it is very difficult to be sure you are in the desired configuration.

Also, it's not the easiest to "shift on the fly," as the control buttons are close together.

The foot controls work fairly well, however, when used in combination with a pad, the sounds will sometimes cancel each other out. I can get an excellent high-hat swish control with the foot switch, however, but only when not using any of the pads in conjunction.

The stereo out is a nice touch, allowing for monitoring or going to headset.

I've not played much with teh MIDI out function because my needs are fairly simple, but would be interested to know how others view this function.

Also, larger pads would be a plus as it's easy to over strike when in the "stick" mode.

Overall, an excellent, practical and cost-efficient addition to a full drum kit or for a percussionist in a more acoustic setting.

1) Good feature set for price
2) Good enough for gigs
3) Small and light and versatile
4) Good quality - but - white plastic shell looks cheap.
5) Making customized patches/sound sets is VERY complicated although using the presets is easy.

I would say it is fairly road worthy. In the right case and the right person setting it up, you should never have any problems.

Sound:
I use the unit for triggering a groovesampler. It is ok for the money, but has extreme drawbacks in the live music scene. The unit is real touchy with double triggering. My piccolo snare fires this unit off at the blink of an eye. I am planning on moving on the SPD 20 once I get more info on the sensativity of the triggers.

I played with it in a store for about an hour. It has excellent sensitivity for hand drumming. The sounds are mono, but pretty good. The set-up is easy. I like the size: it will fit easily on a shelf when not in use.
