If this were lost or stolen I might not replace it. I love having it and trying it for things, but I can't say that I really need it to do good recording or live sound. But no regrets...
Sound
This is a very honest, nuetral-sounding mic. I've used it as a live drummer's vocal mic in a rock band, as a distant stage mic for live theater recording, and as a mono drum overhead mic live. I expected it to be a special-purpose, odd sort of mic, but it sounds at least good on everything so far.
Features
Lo-cut does what it should, windscreen is as-advertised (won't help much in a serious windstorm).
Ease of Use
Not very cranky at all. If you just think "shotgun", you won't try it on other things, but you should.
Quality
This is very sturdy for such a light mic. I have stopped treating it like a condensor.
Value
I have no other shotgun mic experience (shotguns are VERY pricey). This mic is at or near the entry point for shotguns. I do not regret the purchase, and do not lust after more expensive shotguns.
Manufacturer Support
i have dealt with Rode about a different mic (NT1A) that failed myteriously just after the warranty period. The factory didn't just fix it, they replaced it with a new mic. that is support in capitals.
The Wow Factor
I had to get a ribbon(or three), I had to get a shotgun. It is a kind of exotic little thing to have. It really had no practical appeal, but I ocassionaly had wondered, "would a good shotgun work for this?" There was only one way to scratch that itch.

I initially bought this mic to use for movies and documentaries. I think it works very well as a close-up to short mid-range shotgun mic. I am also intending to use this to get ambient and environmental sounds for background audio. It works well! The sound is very neutral, and honest! It does exactly what its supposed to do.
