"All you need to keep up with the acoustic Jones'!"

I needed an amp for my U Bass, as well as needed to be able to play anywhere the acoustic guitar guys do. This amp easily overpowered a small session the other night. It really kicks out all you need to keep up with even the most hard strumming acoustic players. I also had it shipped in two days and zZounds delivered just as promised. Excellent service and product!

"Nice portable battery powered amp for using outdoors with acoustic instruments"

I needed something small and nothing fancy to amplify either an acoustic bass or provide just a little amplification for an acoustic duo I'm a member of when playing outdoors or elsewhere when there is no power available. I read through various other reviews of this and competing products on this and other websites and settled on this Hog 30 due to it's power rating (30 watts), price, battery life, and size of speaker (8 inch vs smaller in other portable amps and I wanted a bigger speaker to handle a bass). Also, other reviewers seemed to like the tone of this amp vs others that were more expensive. I've used it several times now in actual gig situations, all outdoors, and I have to say I am very pleased with the performance and sound of the amp. I've used it with just an acoustic bass (very moderate volume as the speaker does have a small rattle when playing bass) and using a battery powered mixer, mixed in two vocal mics and two acoustic guitars through the unit. While it's no Bose L1 in terms of sound quality, it provided that extra amplification needed to be heard vs just playing acoustically. Especially when playing an acoustic bass (not an upright, but a guitar bass). It projected well beyond 30 feet around the tent where we played so folks could hear us nicely without being overpowering. We kept the unit in the cleanest sound (no overdrive) that we could dial in. It also has a line out that you could send over to a full powered PA if needed, although note that all the inputs/outputs are 1/4 inch vs XLR. You will need some line matching transformers if going from low to high impedance. There is a 1/4" headphone jack making this a nice portable practice amp. I read in another review where someone brought this amp out camping and played a Kala UBass (a ukulele bass) through it while doing some campfire singing for almost 5 hours without the battery running out. I thought that was a pretty interesting use and a testament to battery life which I was concerned about. Overall the quality of the sound, projection, and power held up very nicely for such a reasonably priced amp. We have played for 2.5 hours straight (unit was on all the time) and there was no signs that the amp's batteries were giving out. It comes with a charger that won't overcharge the unit, automatically shutting down once a full charge is reached. Recharge time is also very reasonable. Also, it uses 2 lead acid batteries vs lithium ion so you don't have to worry about the "battery memory" issue. I was pleasantly surprised that the unit is pretty light weight just around 25 pounds so very portable as well as easy to setup. Just plug in your instrument(s), set your desired EQ, and go! As prior reviews have stated the manual is not all that useful, but it has the basics. The EQ section is very basic, but at least it has 3 bands (treble, mid, bass). There are no effects such as reverb which would be a nice to have, but playing outdoors you won't miss that aspect. It has a vol and master vol to get some overdrive, but I didn't experiment with that aspect keeping to a clean acoustic tone. The unit arrived with the batteries charged enough to test the unit out to make sure it wasn't damaged in shipment. I put it on a charge for a couple of hours when it was fully in the "green" with a full charge. It seems to hold a charge very nicely too. Overall if you have a need for a battery powered amp that can provide power from a single instrument up to a full 2 mic/2 acoustic guitars through an external mixer, where the tone is reasonable, at a price point that won't break the bank, this unit is hard to beat! How long it will last remains a question as it is made overseas, but for now, this is working out well for those occasional outdoor gigs where there is no available power.

"A smart way to go"

The HOG-30 provides a highly mobile platform for the player to access a decent sounding amplifier with sufficient power and portability to play anywhere at any time for a small crowd. NO, it will not fill an auditorium with window shattering power or pass a Pro-Audio analysis set point, but it will provide a small venue with more than sufficient power while allowing complete portability at a Very reasonable price. Are there others out there with more power, YES... at 3x the cost. Can you go wrong with this purchase, I think not.
