After playing off and on for over forty years this is the last one for me - at least so my wife tells me.........
Sound
It doesn't sound too great on it's own but plugged into an amp it takes on a whole new meaning. If you've been playing only solid guitar like I have then the wider neck takes a bit of getting used to, but if you are looking for a completely different sound then you can't go wrong at the price. It has a deep rich tone - even with factory strings. A set of Gibsons's should enhance it even more but I have no plans to change them at the moment.
Features
The volume and tone controls look a bit cheap but nothing that can't be fixed with some replacements.
Quality
I said the volume and tone controls looked cheap and that's a shame for the guitar with it's gold fittings is utterly beautiful otherwise. It's extremely well made and the finish outstanding and I reckon it could easily stand on it's own against the more expensive guitars of this type. I see no reason why it couldn't be used regularly at gigs but depending on your taste in music.
Value
The guitar is a steal at $300!!
Manufacturer Support
Haven't needed to use the support site yet but if the instrument is representative of Peavey quality then I see no problems.
The Wow Factor
I had almost despaired after shopping around for similar instruments in this price range, but when I saw the JF 1 in black it was love at first sight!! Can't say more that that. (Change the style of volume and tone controls please!!)

"PEAVY JF-1"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I alternate using this for chord work and blusy leads, also use my Les Paul a lot for straight rock and Texas blues.
Sound
Stock Humbuckers are outstanding. With the excellent neck playability, this makes for one fine guitar. Blues chords and riffs are awesome, especially using the neck pickup. Good right off of the rack. Have your pro do a proper set up and you will love this guitar. Best for the $ I have had, and I own a Gibson LP studio.
Features
Tuners are the only weak point. Not bad,but a little sloppy. Holds tune well for about an hour, long enough for any session before a break. Easy fix with High grade Grovers.
Quality
This is a solid, well built guitar for the money. Remember its not a $3000 335, but you can get wonderfull sound with todays amps and effects.
Value
Worth twice the price...easy!
Manufacturer Support
My local pro is a Peavy dealer. He does free set ups, and deals directly with Peavy. No problem.
The Wow Factor
Gorgeous guitar with gold tuners, pickups. Every time I play it, someone comments on it's attractivness.

"Amazing Value for the Money"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

I purchased this guitar online because I wanted an inexpensive ES-335 style guitar. This Peavey JF-1 has an unusual contoured neck. I was amazed how easy it is to play. Great for me because I have small hands. Quite honestly, the craftmanship on this guitar is amazing. Flawless bonding around the body and a beautiful candy apple red finish. It is an all maple guitar. I had it set-up with new strings by a pro luthier because the strings buzzed after I took it out of the box, but now the intonation and resonance is very sweet. Unplugged, this guitar sounds very good somewhat like an acoustic. When plugged into an amp, the ceramic pickups are adequate but lack the sustain of more expensive alnico pickups. My friends who plays jazz guitar loves my guitar, too, and he told me to change nothing on the guitar and just leave it as it is. For the money, this is the best semi-hollow guitar I have found anywhere. It was made in China, but has flawless craftsmanship and remarkable attention to detail.

Musical Background:

Grew up on formal trumpet instruction at age 10. Avid guitar player at home. Musical family - mostly classical but jazz, too.

"It's no Guild, but it's more than I expected from a low priced guitar. I'm very happy with it."

I bought this guitar to replace my 40 year old Guild Starfire 5. The only thing I miss is the master control volume and the Bigsby sway bar. It's light and very easy to play.
Features
I wish it had a master volume knob and a case wold be nice too.

"Worthwhile primary guitar for students and as a backup for professionals."

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

I mostly play bass, and keep a guitar for personal pleasure/study and so that I can show guitar players what I want them to do. All in a jazz/bebop setting. If I find myself roped into playing guitar on a gig where the guitar player doesn't show up, I won't hesitate to use this inexpensive Peavey. It is actually a qyuite competant instrument.
Sound
Brought it home and immediately replaced the light gauge strings with a heavy set (58 guage E string) that included a wound G.
Features
No case with it, and I had to buy an aftermarket hardshell case.
Quality
Finish is excellent. Electronics seem good. Tuning gears might be a little dodgy. Stays in tune, but they feel a bit light duty and they aren't really precise.
Value
An excellent buy.
The Wow Factor
It is a good, solid guitar, even if it isn't a spectacularly expensive "jazz box," like the L-5 that went away for groceries and mortgage payments.

Musical Background:

Active musician, primarily standup and electric bass.

"Get more than what you pay for, these days."

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars

I wanted a guitar the could give me the full body sound, almost like an acoustic. (Some of the early Beatles, Rolling Stones) While being able to give a nice creamy sustain, with a little crunch from a pre-amp.
Sound
It has the full tonal quality I was looking for. It does sound a little muddy on the bass end, but can work around it with different amp/effects settings.
Features
It doesn't use the high quality veneer for the body, but a cheaper plywood type. But I wasn't looking for a financial investment, I was looking for an affordable, good sounding guitar. And this is it!
Quality
Besides the cold solder joint that was on one of the wires, I have had no complaints at all. At first I thought that maybe too much was put into the cosmetics of it. (It almost looked too perfect) Leaving the mechanical/electronic end of it short changed. But after a year, it still looks great(The finish isn't easily blemished) And after having it fine-tuned a bit, it sounds, and plays better than before.
Value
Like I mentioned before, If you are looking for an investment, this isn't for you. But if you're looking for something for practical everyday use, this is what you're looking for.
Manufacturer Support
It did have the loose/cold soldered wire issue. I called the shop, explained it to them, took it in, and in two weeks got it back, repaired plus their own fine tuning job. I was extremely happy. They did what they needed to do, plus a little more.
The Wow Factor
People are awe-struck at the beauty and sound of it.
