This is the vocal HOLY GRAIL to me. I also own a Telefunken 251that I use on ballads but the U87 is the go to mic for Rock 'N' roll vocals!

"Venerable Classic"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
This mic will always be a classic. Some like it, some don't, but it will always be a very practical tool for me.
Sound
Like any mic, you need to match it with the source and preamp. When you get the combination right it's wonderful. My favourite, along with the Audio Technica AT4060.
Features
I'd be happier if it had the patterns of the AKG 414X series or Neumann U89/TLM170.
Quality
Top quality build. Great attention to detail.
Value
Considering a Brauner VM1 KHE costs $10,000 it seems cheap, but the Audio Technica range is excellent but cheap.
Manufacturer Support
I had some problems when I bought the mic, and Neumann were wonderful to deal with.
The Wow Factor
I will be buying another.

"I made a stupid mistake by not testing this mic's sound more thoroghly before paying $2700 !!!!"

Overall: 1 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Sound
a good mic, with an over emphasis in the low midrange 400hz to 600hz
Features
has a nice selection of omni, cardiod and figure 8 pattern to choose from. also has a -10db attenuator and rolloff.
Quality
at this price ,the quality of build is good, but I am disappointed in the overall sound on vocals. It worked well with accoustic guitar etc. ,but really sucked on voice.I don't know what all the fuss is about this mic.I also own an old u87 which sounds much more natural on vocals then this u87ai.
Value
I think this mic is totally way overpriced!! I would not buy another !
