Best product on the market for price and use-ability. Simple if you use included software multi-tracker Audiodesk (sorry Mac only). No complaints whatsoever. Sounds great too (of course). So inexpensive, if you've got a fast processor and firewire, you've got no excuse (unless you like getting ripped off by Protools' pricing!).

It is a very good unit, a little hard to initially set up for recording with SonarXL.
A lot of settings to be set before a sound is heard.
However once that hurdle is overcome it is a faultless unit works well, latency is low.
Sounds at 24 bit 48khz are crisp and clean.

Feature:
Biggest negative is the ability to monitor only one pair of input channels (which was changed in the Mk II).

Quality:
Sometimes "freaks" when you first turn it on. Turning it off and on usually fixes it.

Value:
Maybe a bit pricey considering newer additions, but still a great unit.

Desirability:
Sex appeal much improved in the MkII - Kind of a "plain Jane" box with few indicators.

Sound:
Quality recordings. Multiple inputs and Lightpipe input worked perfectly!

Support:
Support website was great. Upgrade downloads easy to find on website.

Unless I'm missing something, I can't monitor the inputs from more than one pair at a time, and the control panel applet for Windows isn't exactly the most feature-rich application in existence. Would be nicer also if the two microphone inputs were dedicated to microphones with a preamp since the gains don't always let me get a hot enough signal without resorting to using a micrphone preamp.

Basically speaking: (1) the audio quality and latency are fantastic; (2) The price really is an awesome feature of this unit; (3) working with it has been flawless (no problems/bugs, etc.); and (4) If you're considering building a home studio...this is what you need. Period.

Out of the box, Motu 828 is laid-out better than the Digi 001 because it has more standard I/O options (optical spdif) on the box than Digi. It also has a firewire connection to your computer (the Digi connects to a PCI card and is $100 more expensive...)

I was reading reviews on the Digi and the Motu, but I physically went to the store and checked both units. The Digi is a nice tool, but the Motu 828 wins, hands-down! Better design, better price.

Overall it has been a good experience. It seems pretty rugged, as it travels alot. However I find the Lightpipe to be quite fickle. This has become quite a hassle on more than one occasion. I have heard complaints about the drivers as one reaches the limits of the box - I can say that using Logic 4.81., on a Tibook 667 - things get slow quick at 48K 24Bit with 24 tracks. Plugs on most tracks, and a VSTi or two.

This is a great firewire system, the best I've ever used but you have to have a god-awful amount of memory in your computer to use it. I had 256 mb ram but had to upgrade to 512 mb to get it to run smoothly.
