I got in to the ukulele about 15 years ago. I've have had vintage Martins, hand made Uke Brand, Kamaka and Koaloha and of course a battery of Asian made instruments in my collection which always seems to stay around a dozen (not proud). These 1 series Martins made in Mexico are magnificent ukuleles. My C1 concert might be the finest I've ever had in terms of tone, volume and build quality. Yes it was built in Mexico and Martin's first attempt at ukulele rebirth about seven or eight years ago was fair at best. These new 1 series are unqualified successes. The wood is pretty if not stunning, the sound, feel and craftsmanship, not to mention the delicious smell are indeed stunning though. If you need the ju-ju of vintage or the élan of Hawaiian or American made, by all means save up until you have the grand it takes. But if you want the best factory uke you've ever heard from the finest instrument company on Earth. This is one sweet bauble! . . . Nice gig bag too.

I tried a lot of different ukes, but it came down to this Martin and the bare-bones Kanilea koa and I honestly preferred the sound of the Martin (at half the price). It's bright, open, and sounds great. I realize it's built in Mexico, and the finish is not quite as beautiful as the Kanilea, but in the end I went with the sound. You won't regret it.

This is a nice little ukulele. Very nice wood and it smells great. For a bottom of the line Martin it is fine. I do believe you are paying some for the Martin name. Most of the time I put low g strings on my ukes, but did not with the C1K. I left the high g strings on and it gives a good classic ukulele sound.
