my home studio is 8 track digital. My gospel trio has recorded and released 2 CDs using Mackie boards. My first Mackie mixer was the vlz1202 (which I still use on remote recording)I bought the 1642 in march of 2002 and we have used the mixer on our 2nd CD.The 1642 matches up great with my digital audio workstation. There is not a better board out there for the money.

Bought 2 years ago. I've had a variety of problems with faulty ins & outs, and other defects. Returned for repair thrice, replaced once. Despite recurring problems, Mackie's tech support was quick, responsive and respectful.

It's a great mixer, excellent mic pre's, very much improved over older mackie pre's. Uncompromised, versatile mixer for small project studios who want clean, quiet & uncolored. Also the EQ is versatile and well designed.

Feature:
I am quite satisfied with the features, though I would have liked more inserts. This would have increased the price no doubt.

Quality:
I am really disappointed here. The board has never worked properly. I have had it into two different repair shops (for considerable amounts of money) and there is still a problem. The most recent tech I spoke with informed me that the 1642 had a bad run of chips and he has seen a lot of them in his shop.

Value:
Not worth what I paid for it. I would look elsewhere if I were to buy again and I will probably try and sell this one and go with another company, possibly Soundcraft.

Desirability:
I was quite attracted to it in the beginning until the hype was replaced by the frustration and disappointment.

Sound:
Not bad sound for a mixer. Mic pre's ok but I get better results with an ART Tube pre.

Support:
I sent in my registration and warrenty card, plus extended warranty and have never heard back from the company. My unfortunate circumstance is that going through a divorce I have not had access to a studio space and ended up using the 1642 only rarely, and when I did it failed regularly. I would get it repaired, put it away until I could get at a project (after getting it repaired) and it would fail again. I finally (within the month) got my studio up and running again only to find out that (now) channel 4 no longer works.

Overall:
I would not buy another.

Feature:
What I expected.

Quality:
Awful. Had a unit fail on me after 5 months. The shop gave me a new one, that failed after 15 months, meaning my warranty has now expired. Not what I expected, when paying 60% more than for a Behringer knockoff. Reapirs will amount to $300.

Value:
No way is this board worth the extra cash.

Desirability:
Looks nice.

Sound:
Nice transparent sound.

Support:
Haven't heard a peep from them.

Overall:
The fail-rate of this board is ridiculous.
