I own the rack version of this synth (MS2000R) for 8 months now, and I'm still impressed by the sound quality and tweakability of this baby! Only thing missing:more polyphony, 4 voices is rather limiting (for pads anyway). Everything else is pure heaven: the ergonomics, very user-friendly, etc...

For people contemplating buying it, here's a few useful things to know: every knob (and there are 35 of them) sends, and can receive midi CC changes, when editing a parameter it's value is displayed on the LCD screen in real-time, a small LED lights up when you put the knob to the original value used in the patch(very useful), no battery inside needed to hold patches in memory (uses non-volatile RAM), very high speed DSP providing fast real-time tweaking without audible "steps", MOD sequencer can record real-time tweaks of any knob up to 16 steps, LFO's can sync to clock, and the list could go on and on...

It's closest rival, the Roland JP8080 has more voices, but only 12 bands Vocoder (MS2000R has 16 bands the more bands mean more intelligible vocoder output), has a slightly slower DSP (fast tweaking of the Filter Cutoff reveals this), and is more expensive. (and has been discontinued by the way).

But don't take my word for it, go try the MS2000 in a music store and take your time, you'll probably end-up buying it! (like I did)

Alain.

I have owned an MS2000 for about 2 years and I would have to say that this machine is capable of making the coolest and fattest sounds of any virtual analog synth. You have total control over the sound and can make really interesting arpeggios on the 16 step sequencer. The arpeggios are not only note changes, but almost any parameter on the synth can be arpeggiated. It also makes a really cool vocoder. One of the most interesting and hypnotic sounds I ever heard was when I ran an Ibanez RG470 into the input of my MS2000. I ran the guitar through a lowpass filter and 2 arps controlling cutoff and resonance. Add a lot of delay and a little wah from the guitar and I was in a trance. My only possible complaint about this incredible machine is the fact that it only has a max of 4 note polyphony and is not truely multitimbral.
I would highly reccomend this machine to anyone who loves to totally shape their own sounds and who wants to add a very distinct flavor to their music.

This synth is yust GOOD!
i own it and evrything else is good..
but now some bad points ( little less to type ;-p )

it looks cheesy and the knobs are to small ( you cant give a fluid cutoff and stuff with bigger knobs that moove more smoothly that will be overcome) for the newbies it isnt good but i am no newbie so its great for me :-)

thats about all

p.s. a few song`s i know about that its made with the korg ms2k are these

svenson and gielen - twisted (its a great example what the synth can do)

milk inc - walk on water (not that good)

mail me if you know some more :-)

The Filmstrip is using one of these right now
in the studio on a project for a label comp, &
we're using it live too. We were all set to buy
a used Waldorf XTK, but this was a much more
frugal choice. The bass sounds & wack leads are
great, the biggest drawback I've found is that
there are not enough memory slots. We tend to
tweak out 3 or more versions of each of our
custom sounds, & we're running out of space!
In some cases the MS is even
more wicked sounding than the German boards.
We are STILL going to get a Waldorf, but the
MS2000 has filled the void left when we
trashed our old Alpha Juno 2. We have a total
of 5 synths & right now the MS is the one that
gets fondled the most.

At first, when I got it, I was moderatly impressed with my MS2000R. The first month was a learning experience and it took some work to get anything descent out of it. The presets are relativly lame and I must say I questioned my decision for quite a while.
Not anymore, One day, I decided to sit down with it and really go at it with the manual and work at editing the presets. Well let me tell you, it became a whole new experience. I can now get some huge sounds out of it and it has almost eliminated all of my other gear.
Now that I know all the paramiters it is a killer tool and I will never part with it. Sure extra polyphony would be nice but it hasn't got to me yet.
In short, my recomendation is to get one, learn it and love it.
My next step will be a NORD III or a WAldorf XTK or maybe both.

Phat synth basses, excellent leads, big sound, a real cool retro 70's electric piano sound, off-the-hook vocoder (think the vocoder sound of Teddy Riley "Teddy's Jam" or DJ Quik "Tonite", that's just one sound)
-one of the best sounding funk-oriented synths out there in my opinion...I feel this is an underrated synthesizer, still in the shadow of another Korg synth, the Triton (Hip Hop producers current favorite), but undeservedly so...
If I hadnt ran out of money when buying my current studio equip., I would own it now...It 's one of those instruments that for certain people will really fit their personality...I hope to purchase one as soon as my current budget allows

the sounds that i can get from this synth is incredible - its easy to use and very very tweakable. there are a few shortfalls though, they are that the build quality isn't as good as it should be, eg the paint can easily flakes off easily, there is also a bit of dirt in the display of my synth. the user manual is pretty crap! i had to learn how to use mine from stuff off the web and books, (mind u it was my first musical instrument). anyone one who knows how to use a synth and twaek it will know how to use this one - its very easy to use once u get the hand of it. the arpeggiator is terrific - no fantastic - its wicked!
