"A good starting point."

For around 500 and below, the dual 18's and dual 15's will not let you down. Even for a beginner with just a basic 15 band equalizer and no processing will produce excellent results. Pair these up with at least something around 1200 watts in 4 ohms. Anything less is starving them in tonal qualtiy. As for low's the two 18's pair up very well to carry the 15's {and if less is needed, simply re-configure the 728s.
Sound
The tone and ease of tuning {using the Harmon Pro Software} makes a breeze to phase align. As co-owner of www.socalboogie.com, two of the 728's along with two 725's are all that we need for Pro-Audio services, and DJ audio services. I currently run Two Xti 4000's and an Xti 6000 {4000's in bridge high/low for the 725, 6000 in stereo for the 728.}
Features
Best feature is the ability to de-configure the subs to run a dedicated amp per sub {as I did before purchasing an Xti 6000.} Makes it easier for the LOOK of a large sub with the driven bass off of 1 sub.
Ease of Use
No casters means either A. screwing some on {not my choice} or B. purchasing furniture dollies {my route.} Cases just make these TOO large, so I opt for the JBL covers. Weight, obviously, is a huge concern. As a single person, I can still muster these myself on and off.
Quality
If price point is your positoin, move into the MRX line or EON line. These are NOT cheap, and cheap is something never to skimp out on with Pro anything. Duratex coating is somewhat skimpy {Harbinger's finish feels more durable.} The dual handles on either side make it a breeze to transport them around, or push them on a furniture cart. SOLID cabinets that will not let you down, even with the toughest lows to bellow out.
Value
These are closest valued next to EV QRx line.
Manufacturer Support
JBL has always been very good with questions. What's nice is that there right in Northridge CA, {as my company is in Los Angeles, CA.}
The Wow Factor
Very good looking cabinet. Ultra responsive and linear sound. Nice that you can remove the "oh so JBL" logo's from the grille's.

I love the SRX728S - it sounds way better than any other subs I've heard including higher end Dynacords, etc. Tons of output and great sound quality.
Sound
The sound quality and output is simply amazing. You can hear this thing from a quarter mile away! (no joke). The lows are deep and will actually move your clothing when you get anywhere near this thing. Punishing SPL
Features
I wish the duraflex finish was a little tougher, but it handles everyday abuse pretty well. Option to run both woofers at 4 ohms, or each woofer at 8
Ease of Use
Plug and play - use a Crown XTI4000 or 4002 and get ready to rock!
Quality
These things can take serious punishment. They will hit hard all night long and not even break a sweat. Keep them running with good clean power and they'll last for years.
Value
A little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Worth every penny!
Manufacturer Support
I've never needed to service these
The Wow Factor
This thing is super sexy. Don't hesitate buying a few of these!
