I took my time to write this review, as I wanted to spend enough time with the bass to be honest with my opinion. With that said, this is a fantastic bass! After opening the shipping box, my first impression was, that the pictures don't do it justice! I love the bevel cuts at the upper and lower horns, giving complete access to the bass and treble side frets. Plus they give the body a badass look! The EMGs are very powerful, just what I need to cut through two loud guitars in an original hard rock- thrash band. The first time I played my solo on this bass, I realized the neck is super fast! Well balanced, great tone, awesome looks, speedy neck. Whats not to love?

Musical Background:

Been playing for about 30 years, from local clubs, to 5000 seat theatres.

Musical Style:

Original and cover classic, hard rock, red dirt, and now thrash originals.

I will start off after reading some other reviews of people that have had issues. I ordered the blemished model and when recieved it had a defect like it was advertised but something happened during shipping and the neck joint where the 2 pieces that make the neck meet were split. I told zZounds and immediately for no extra charge sent me a brand new one. Now on the bass. Active eq. Love it. Versatile. Good punch. Great for metal. Turn the eq down and can play jazz, soft rock, whatever fits your preference. The neck and action is awesome. Made for fast playing. 3 band eq allows you more range. It's not heavy so rocking out for a couple hours or just playing around at home wont wear you out. All in all. Love the bass. Recommend it to whoever wants a high-end versatile clean and punchy sounding bass.

Musical Background:

I jam at home. Not professional. Playing for 2 years.

Musical Style:

I bought a Jackson JS3VQ and the fit form and function are flawless. So, I figure that a Signature bass in a higher price point with EMGs on board would been even better, right? Not this particular bass. I honestly hate to write this review, since I do NOT think this is typical of Jackson o the Ellefson Imported models, but I had a few issues. The first thing I noticed was that where the two pieces of wood join in the neck, it was not smooth. I don't know if it wasn't properly sanded, or if the integrity of one piece of wood changed, or would. At best, it was distracting when playing. At worst, it could have gotten progressively worse (but probably not?).Second, it sounded more like a passive bass. I am aware that the pickups are passive, but the EQ is not, as I am pretty sure is the case in the JS3VQ. The latter has far more power than the Ellefson the EMGs. There was a battery, and the sound was clean, indicating it was not a dying battery. The fret ends on the treble side weren't filed down smooth; they were a bit jagged. Not sharp to the point of cutting, but certainly not clean and slick.Lastly, unlike my JS3QV, the Ellefson came in severely detuned (my other bass came in pretty close in being in tune) and did not hold a tune very well. I am gaging my impressions partly based on the how high a bar was set by a bass costing 67$ (=/-) of the price. I also am going on experience with a number of fretted instruments over the years. In conclusion, based on OTHER reviews and my own experience with a different base, I don't assume that the Ellefson Model is a bad buy, I simply think I got a bass that slipped through the cracks. I could see myself trying another Ellefson down the road in a store. I DID NOT CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER REGARDING THIS MATTER
