ISP Decimator G String Customer Review

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars

The first section of the pedal tracks the guitar sound only, and everything you hook up between the guitar out jack and the "Dec in" jack gets gated. There are obvious benefits to this method, in that it doesn't have to track the guitar through the noise of everything you're trying to silence. I tried just bridging the guitar out to the jack in with a cable and it made a ton of noise. I then put a Route 66 overdrive and compressor in the chain at full gain with my JSX also cranked and it worked better than I could have expected. I've also tried this in an effects loop (must be series obviously) of a Fender Metalhead, but I had to set it really high and was getting cutoff at both ends. I was in a really small room and probably would have had better luck in a larger area. This pedal is best for someone who runs a lot of pedals. The only pedal I run live right now is a tuner so I would say I'm going total overkill but it works excellent just as a feedback killer.
Sound
When set correctly this pedal works as intended. Attack is really only cut off in the highest settings, makes a little (emphasis on little) noise when closing the gate, but in a live situation you never hear it. Even at high settings, it seems quite responsive to sustained notes and I haven't had a problem with cutoff. Does not seem to "suck" tone, but I have had better luck with some configurations than with others.
Features
Pedal features one switch, one knob, and 4 jacks. And magic. How they've managed to make it work as good as it does with just one control is frankly quite impressive.
Ease of Use
Hook it up, power on your entire rig, kill your guitar volume, and turn the pedal up until you hear the noise level drop significantly. You then just fine tune until you have the decay that you're looking for. The knob is VERY sensitive and extremely small adjustments are required with this unit.
Quality
Excellent quality. Keep it in the box so you don't bump your knob.
Value
Expensive but probably the best.
The Wow Factor
Bright chrome. I hide it.

Will not look for another product..I am satisfied. I actually owned the regular Decimator but after two week I purchased the G-String because I did not want to have to turn the pedal off when I switched to a clean sound from high gain
Sound
Transparent..no noticeable alteration to tone.
Features
The most useful feature is the extra circuit that tracks the unaltered guitar signal.
Ease of Use
Just set the knob at the point the noise is suppressed.
Quality
No problems..seems to be built well.
Value
Expensive.
Manufacturer Support
Have not had to contact support.
The Wow Factor
If you play with high gain or noisy pedals, you need this.

Just bought 1, hooked it up, & yes this is the pedal to have! This thing is solid like a rock. Looks great & plays great! I was leery of spending this much on a pedal but, it's definitely worth every penny. Holds resale value as well. I run it off the pedal chain with 12 other pedals & yes, it works need I say more!

"Big Disappointment!"

Big waste of my time and the money I spent on shipping!
Sound
This thing kills the sustain in your signal. Although I didn't detect any issues with it coloring the sound.
Features
Nice concept, but not as useful as the NS-2. I'd like an ability to set the gate trigger time.
Ease of Use
One knob. Turn it until the noise disappears...then listen to your notes get cut off!
Quality
MADE IN CHINA!!!
Value
Way too expensive for what you get. $224, this thing should rock!
Manufacturer Support
Although its easy to use, the manual sucked too.
The Wow Factor
No way. Its shiny chrome

"Follow Directions and it works."

I don't have any problem with my tone other then a lil gain.
Sound
Unlike the NS2, this thing doesn't muffle your tone. I have both and still use both...the NS2 is in the amp loop, the Gstring is for the pedal board. If you hook it up as directed (which is different than a lot of pedals) you won't have a problem. In the off position, unlike the NS2, it doesn't affect the sustain of your clean tone. The only coloration that I've noticed is that it may boost your signal even when off. This is NOT a true bypass pedal! You can always route around it, but the unit looses points for gain in my otherwise clean amp setting. It's only a hair, but I notice it.
Features
It has ONE knob. All you have to do is stand there with your noisiest effects on...don't even play, just stand there, turn the dial until the hiss is gone. That's it!
Ease of Use
stomp on it, turn the knob.
Quality
This is heavy compared to similar sized pedals, I don't care if it was built in China, it's as solid as a rock.
Value
It's expensive but it works better than anyting else I've tried. Guitar SKB stage 5 pedal board Peterson Strobe Tuner Fulltone Clyde Delux Digitech Whammy TC Nova Drive Jam Man Looper Decimator G-string Genz Benz Black Pearl. For me with this rig, it works and I'm happy with it.
Manufacturer Support
Haven't needed any, but I will say thanks to ZZ, I had it the next day using regular shipping!
The Wow Factor
I would get another one if I had a second rig that required it.
