I've just received my new Gibson USA Grace Potter Flying V and cannot put it down. Initial inspection revealed absolutely no flaws in QC. The action is good up and down the neck, with no fretting out on bends. I will qualify this by stating that this is a highly subjective quality, which varies between guitarists. I'm not a "pro", so was apprehensive about spending so much on a guitar, esp. since I already own around 10 (PRS SE's, Jackson, Peaveys, Samick, etc), all of decent/good quality, but I will firmly state that no guitar made overseas can touch this Gibson USA product, at least within my 20+ yrs experience. I really did the legwork on this guitar via the internet, since none were stocked at any store within 100 miles, and have not read a negative review from owners of this instrument. Will it be everyone's perfect guitar?....No, but I haven't found a "perfect" guitar that suits anyone who picks it up. If, like me, you come from a "shredder" type platform such as Jackson/Ibanez/ESP, you should be very comfortable migrating, and may even become a convert after spending some time with it. Unfettered access to the upper frets is what drove me to consider V's, Steinbergs, SG's, and the like, since my meathook hands jam against the lower cutaways, and online comparison shopping convinced me to opt for a V style over the others, especially a made-in-USA product. I could go on, but my newest muse pulls mightily upon my hands!
Sound
Modern metal players will probably want more modern-sounding pickups, but since my metal is circa 80's, these will do perfectly. Happening blues, classic rock, and modern rock tones are in abundance with the Burstbuckers, with harmonically rich clean and distorted sounds easily coaxed. Word to the uninitiated: crappy amp = crappy tone, so if you are playing through a crappy amp, this guitar will not improve your tone.
Features
Awesome pickups (to me, at least), flawless paint, great case, and totally awesome that you get body AND fretboard binding in a custom shop Gibson USA V for the price! To the hobbyist/amateur: Take the plunge and step up to this guitar!
Ease of Use
Great tones spring forth effortlessly for me when played through my Marshall JTM 30w combo. The one effect in constant use for me is a MXR Dynacomp, so "good/great sound" for me is probably not to everyone's taste.
Quality
I own a couple of very, very nice PRS SE's (singlecut, Paul Allender) which I played before buying, and even after putting them in the shop for fine-tuning, they cannot touch this Gibson USA V.
Value
Absolutely worth the money! Just do it! A classy-looking, distinctive instrument that is destined to become a heirloom to my children.
Manufacturer Support
Haven't had to deal with them, but look forward to it if I must since they get fantastic online reviews.
The Wow Factor
Very personal subject, especially for musicians. The "Wow Factor" for me was all of the features/options in a US-made guitar at its price. Seriously, play one if you can, and if you cannot, order it, check it out, and if it doesn't suit you, Zzounds has the best customer support hookup in the biz.
