My, oh my! I've been playing bass for close to 50 years and it wasn't until about five years ago that I belatedly dipped by toes into the world of 5-strings and realized what I had been missing. So, I cut my 5-string teeth on a popular, less expensive brand model and became hooked. Was at the local guitar shop and saw the Fender model hanging on the wall and tried it out. Raced home and dialed up zZounds. Within two days the baby was delivered. Absolute, incredible tone! This is a wide-body and not for the faint of heart. No super low action and skinny neck. This baby is beefy (around 10 pounds) and is like having a telephone pole strapped around your neck. But after spending a couple days with it and ridding my mind of physical comparisons to my other 5-string, I realized I was deeply and hopelessly in love. The N3 pickups are very responsive/impressive and the toggle between active & passive is a god-send. Pumped through my Ampeg SVT-7 Pro and NEO cabs guarantees instant goosebumps. I will admit to one mod ... I chucked the OEM strings and tightened it up with a brand new set of DR Flatwounds. There are not enough words to further describe the tone I've arrived at. Oh, and the included SKB case is tops!

Seriously, this is hands down the best bass I've ever owned. I immediately replaced the strings with D-Addario Tape wounds. The sound and playability are awesome. I pretty much play it with the eq flat on both the guitar and the amp (MarkBass). This was a fairly expensive bass, but IMHO plays better than some $2500 basses I've played. This thing is well worth the money.

Ok so I have been wanting this bass for 2 years, but I first purchased an American Standard Precision first from zZounds, love it!!!! I had taken a few years off of playing and found the excellent Play as you Pay from zZounds so here I am. First of all this bass is beautiful, sometimes I just set it up on to just look at. I bought the Olympic White 5 String about 3 weeks ago with Rosewood neck. It plays like a dream, sound terrific already laid down a demo track with it here: https://soundcloud.com/rnesco/planet-bombIt has so many tones, from smooth to growly and punchy! Love the Active and Passive option. This thing is quiet I have no issues with shielding at all with the Noiseless PuPs. My only complaint was the action wasnt to my liking so took it to my guy for setup and the G string is a little closer to the edge then I am use to due to the wide string spacing, at first choked or rolled the string off the edge but with a little cleaning up my playing and practice, non issue now. This is now my main bass, I love it! Not even sure if Ill swap the PuPs and PreAmp like so many do, sounds great out of the case. I recommend this bass, I cant put it down.

to put it simply this is an amazing bass. i have played the cheaper fenders and i have never been impressed, and always ended up buying other brands. then i tried an american fender..... i have read many reviews stating the lower end fenders are as good as the american line, i cant agree with that,, it's literally day and night imo. everything from the craftsmanship to the sound quality blows away everything else i have tried in its price range. any tone ive ever wanted i have found with this bass. i have been consistantly impressed with this bass from the time i opened the box, even the case was above my expectations. many thanks to zZounds and fender for delivering a flawless product to my door.

Amazing. Couldn't ask for more in an instrument. Being able to switch between active and passive is extremely convenient. Pick ups go from bold and punchy to thick and warm with the quick turn of the knob. Amazing tonal range. Also, I've never liked the look of Fender Tuners, but they stay in tune unlike any other I've ever used.

I own Ibanez basses which are nice. But compared to this fender 5 string they feel like toys now! Fender basses have the look and feel of a real instrument. And the sound is beyond what you can imagine. Do what you need to buy this bass! You'll be glad you did.

Great build quality on this "Tone Machine" active and passive "noiseless" pickups. This bass belongs in any serious player's arsenal. If I had to go to a session and all I could bring is 1 bass, this is the one hands down. Great playability right out of the case. Minimal adjustments necessary. This is a GREAT instrument!

I just purchased a Jazz Bass American Deluxe V. Right out of the box it looked and sounded Great. The fit & finish is Quality. Wish the body would have been one piece, would have added to the quality factor. This is my first American J-Bass, and a 5 string no less. The B-string is tight, No Slop!!! That is very important to me. This bass has great Growl. The only thing that needs to be done is lower the action and put on a set of DR's, High Beams and this bass is "Good To Go"!!!!! The 3-tone sunburst with black pick guard looks "Great". Bottom line, if you like Fender, if you want a J-Bass, if it's gotta' be 5-string with lots of versatility and great looks, buy one of these. You won't be disappointed.

Bass came double boxed and in the heavy duty ATA rated case. Upon opening the case, the bass looks astounding! (Olympic White) Fender goes the extra mile to include several goodies like, strap, straplocks, instrument cable, various allen keys for bridge and truss rod adjustments. Speaking of adjustments, none were needed out of the box. Action was low and buzz free; heck..the thing was almost in tune too. The neck is smooth, no protruding fret ends, so easy to play. What more could you ask for? Just plucking the strings with the bass still in the case, sound was thick, sustaining & amazing. It has a harmonic balance that is unprecedented. That was a great precursor to actually hearing this bad-boy plugged in to my MB Mpulse 600 & Powerhouse 1200 rig. I own 2 G&Ls and a Schecter Diamond P5. The Fender is now my go-to bass, as well as, my prized posession. Well done Fender! Waiting for more stock of the Natural - Maple FB, then will probably buy a second. Last but not certainly least: my favorite thing about this bass is "Made is the U.S.A."

"My favorite bass!!! Not perfect, but I love it."

This has become my favorite bass to play. It feels smooth and fast. The tones I can get are endless with the active and passive options. I prefer to keep it passive, but that is just me. It stays in tune like a boss and just feels so good to play. There are a couple of things I don't like, though. It feels a little heavy after playing for a couple of hours, but that is almost unavoidable with a solid five string. It is just what it is. I can't seem to get the intonation perfect on the low B, but that might be because of the strings I use. The intonation is pretty damm near perfect though. The last thing I didn't like is that the grounding around the cavities is not the best. I was getting some hum, but after I grounded all the cavities with copper tape, the hum is gone. No bass bass is perfect, but this one is my favorite, and every time I go to a music store and play different basses, I still leave being glad to own and play this one.

"I love this bass!!! ...only a couple things I would change"

This bass plays like butter and it has a very wide range of tones with the passive and active options. The neck feels smooth and fast. The bass had a good set up when it arrived. The case is very nice and sturdy. My main beef with this bass is that the electronics cavities aren't shielded at all, so you can get hum from different sources. I shielded all the cavities with copper tape and solved the issue myself, but for the price, I wish it was done at the factory. The electronics inside were a little messy and the shrink tubing joining some cables didn't really look very well attached and could move easily. I also fixed this myself by replacing the shrink tubes to avoid any connection from becoming loose while playing live. Those are the only two things I don't like about this bass, everything else about it won me over. It is my main bass now.

Musical Background:

Played music for 10+ years. Currently playing semi-professionally.
