Nothing about this amp feels cheap. This amp has a great reputation for its distortion. It has gain for days. I play in a hard rock band (Arythma) which borders on the sound of Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Staind, and others of the like and this amp's gain knob on the lead channel never passes 1 o'clock. As far as Channel 3 goes, I am absolutely 100% in love with this amp. The 7 JJ tubes in the preamp are an absolutely beautiful touch to this amp. When I strum an open Drop D chord, the gain absolutely sizzles. I would put this distortion against a Soldano, Rivera or Diezel any day! I can say for sure that I love this distortion wayyy more than a Mesa because my other guitist plays a Triple Rec and even he was like "that distortion is nassssttyyyy." Sheer quality! Now, to the nitty gritty. This amp is loud. I would put money on the fact that this is the loudest 50W head in existence. Holy mother of God this thing is loud! Absolutely not made for bedroom volume. I mentioned earlier that my Channel 3 (lead/high gain) gain knob never passes 1 o' clock, well, my volume never passes 1 o' clock either and my band plays with a loooot of volume. This amp is great for ANY size venue. Again, the build quality is absolutely phenomenal. There is nothing about this amp that feels cheap or half-@$$ed at all. I got the matching 2x12 cab (which I absolutely highly recommend) and there is a really awesome feature that allows you to pair this with said cabinet. Underneath the amp is a bracket system that slides out on the left and right side of the head and you connect it to the 2x12 cab. Once you secure the head onto the cab, it is LOCKED and you can use the really cool feature on the cab where it has some heavy duty legs that allow you to prop the cab back at a 45 degree angle. The head will stay on there, I promise. Again, it's trustworthy, as I said, nothing feels cheap about this amp. So far, I've omitted Channel 1 and Channel 2, and that's for a reason. So far, my review has been all glitter, rainbows and sunshine, but now for the flipside of my review. Channel 1. First off, there is nothing wrong with this channel. It sounds great, to be honest. I said Channel 3 is on par with some $3,000+ heads, and I meant it. Channel 1 on the other hand is on par with the other amps in its price range (1,000), but no higher. This is only my opinion, but I'm extremely well-versed in sound, equalization, recording, and experience in the general field of guitarmanship. The clean is great, but Mesa has this amp beat on the cleans. I have an Egnater Vengeance head and my Egnater definitely has this amp's clean beat. Don't take what I'm saying too far. The amp's clean sounds great, in general terms, but it's not the selling point of this amp. Hopefully this won't turn you off to this amp. The Achilles heel of this amp, in my opinion. Channel 2. The sound is phenominal. It has one of the greatest crunches I've ever heard, hands down. The crunch channel is every bit as good as the sound of channel 3. "So why are you calling it the Achilles heel," you may ask. Because it shares all the controls of your clean and there is an INSANE volume jump when you go from clean to crunch. And I do mean "insane." There is no way in any situation you could make this volume jump sound natural. So, in other words, without special effects processing, you cannot use both channels 1 and 2 on this amp. Now, if you're like me and use a good effects processor, you can have your clean saved to a patch with a boost compressor to sort of compensate the volume. I.e. you can make your clean much, much louder, that way switching to channel two (without the boost compressor), the volume jump would be pretty much depleted. So "where there's a will, there's a way." Bottom Line Pros: The best distortions I've ever heard in my life. Still a great clean channel. MIDI, thank you god! It has MIDI input, which is a life saver! Very solidly built. The neat bracketing system underneath to be used in conjunction with the 2x12. Even though it is only 50W, you can (volume-wise) blow a Mesa Triple Rec out of the water (150W). Bottom Line Cons: Bedroom volume is just not plausible with this amp. The INSANE volume jump between Channels 1 and 2, only being able to compensate by using an effects processor. No parameter controls for the effects loop. Despite the Achilles heel, I am still giving this amp a perfect 10 because it is only $1000 and its distortion is the best I've ever heard in my life. There is not a single recording studio on the planet that would tell you this is a "sub par" amp. The distortion really is THAT good. I'm in love. Plus it has MIDI. :)

I did alot of research before I pulled the trigger and bought this amp . Hundreds of hours and lots of test drives . I looked very carefully at the Marshal DSL100 , Egnater Veangance, Peavey 6505 and 6534 , Laney Ironheart, and the Blackstar HT series , in the end I had narrowed it down to the Egnater , the Marshall , and in the end this was the clear winner in this group and price range ! First , I prefer the 50 watt head because you can push them alot harder than you can a 100 or 120 and tubes sound better when you are pushing them . There is only 3 decibels difference between a 50 watt and a 100 watt head ! The amateur or semi pro musician will never have a situation where they need more . If so your playing an arena and plugging into a board anyway . That being said this is a LOUD 50 watt head that will make alot of 100 watt heads run home to mama and leave a puddle on your cabinet ! She barks! 7 12ax7's in the preamp pushing 2 6L6 power stacks equals sonic doom ! Thats alot of glass in a 50 watt head ! JJ's even ! In terms of pure gain the only one of these amps I compared that hangs with this is the 6505 . The others will not get there without help . The 6505 is a buzz saw ! It's a great amp ! The 5153 has a MUCH better clean channel than the 6505 , all the gain and saturation, but is more articulate with better single note clarity . I'm sure it's Fender lineage has something to do with that . The 5153 50 watt head is based on the mods Eddie was doing to the 100 . It's second channel has more gain on tap the on the 100 and both have more gain on channel 3 on tap than any human being could EVER use ! If you can't get enough gain out of either you don't need a stomp box . You need an excorsism ! . Has midi if your into that(the 100 does not), and a 1/4 inch headphone jack that mutes the speakers so you can practice at home while the woman is watching her show . A lot as been said about the volume jump between channels 1 and 2 due to them having a shared eq set . It is significant due to channel 2 being a very hot channel, channel one being so clean and all that glowing glass in the preamp . Keeping the gain up does help compensate some . Otherwise you could dedicate a clean boost to channel one in the effects loop or just use it as a two channel amp when playing live and just save the very nice clean channel for recording and sitting at home alone getting in touch with your feminine side . Everyone talks like this somehow slipped by the boys in the engineering department. It didn't ! They actually went to Eddie himself with the "Problem" . He insisted they didn't touch it ! The only way to address this would have been to compromise and take away from channel 2 and Eddie wasn't having it ! Channel 2 is incredible and worth the price of admission all by itself ! It will cover everything from dirty blues to classic rock to metal and 80's thrash with ease and channel 3 opens the gates of hell ! I got the matching 212 cabinet. It's comes with British Celestion 30 watt evh speakers (greenbacks with evh stickers on them) , and void free birch ply construction . The tilt back feature is slick ! It comes with a 4 button footswitch that uses a regular instrument cable (included) so if something happens to yours you just need to grab another guitar cable and your back in business! It also come with a very nice speaker cable and the casters so don't buys them separately! I will buy the matching 412 next year and have a kick ass 3/4 stack when I'm done . This is THEE best amp I have ever owned and for my money there isn't anything in its price range the can touch it ! I did my homework ! I got it on the Pay as you Play plan and why wouldn't you ? I could have thrown it on a credit card but why pay credit card interest if you don't have too ? Shipping was free and I live in the middle of nowhere South Dakota! It showed up at my door in pristine condition . I am extremely pleased all the way around and Zzounds will get my business from now on ! I hope this helps anyone that's on the fence . BUY IT !
Sound
If you want to play any kind of rock you'd be hard pressed to do better than this beast !
Features
It's very simple but very versitile .
Ease of Use
It's very versatile and extremely touch sensative . It responds to pick attack and rolling back the volume more than any amp I have ever owned or played through .
Quality
Built like a tank !
Value
Absolutely! Can't beat this one when it comes to bang for the buck !
Manufacturer Support
I have not had any issues that would require any contact .

Nothing short of AMAZING! This amp, the 5150 iii 50w head is incredibly well made and sounds brutal, responds to volume knob on your guitar like no other amp i've ever played, you can have a extremely heavy tone dialed in, turn ur volume pot down and have a nice soft crunchy cleanish tone, just like eddie doesIf this amp was destroyed or stolen, i would not even consider buying a different amp, EVH 5150 ALL DAY! THE HYPE IS REAL!
Sound
dont let channels 1 and 2 sharing the same EQ turn you away, im playing an LP custom with a Seymour duncan JB4 in the bridge and the green channel even at half gain is VERY clean, switch to blue and you've got a awesome rhythm crunch tonethe red channel.... Eddie went to extremes to make sure this channel was everything you'll ever need, you do NOT need a boost pedal with this amp, now of course if you play heavy metal you'll use one anyways to tighten up this ALREADY extremely TIGHT! amp nothing about the red channel is loose of flubby (I use Eminence Governor Speakers) this amp has More low end punch than any other, if you have a 6505+, you owe it to your self to get an EVH 5150, its just a better more refined amp imo (dont get me wrong, i still love my 6505+ and still use it)
Features
the FX loop and the fact you can turn your FX loop on/off thru the included foot switch is incredible, the channel switching is INSTANTANEOUS! Zero latency when switching channels. I haven't tried the preamp out or the head phones option so i cant comment on them, but the resonance control is very nice.
Ease of Use
this amp could have all kinds of mid boost/cut bright switches this that and the other, but it doesn't need them, the tone is extremely versatile and easy to dial in
Quality
amp is on par with Mesa/Diezel Quality, for a made in Mexico product the quality is INSANELY good, not that stuff from Mexico is bad, id rather have my guitars and amps made in Mexico than china any day of the week! They take some serious pride in their work in that Mexican fender Factory! FLAWLESS amp, oh and the transformers are HUGE!!!!!!!
Value
This amp is easily on par with any 2-5k$ amps the included footswitch is built like a tank, as is the Amp its self. Free speaker cableMy GAS has been relieved.
Manufacturer Support
Probably will not need it, Eddie's version of crash testing something is, turn everything up to 10 on the amp, plug the guitar in, lay it down infront of the cab, let it feedback, close the door, come back a month later and it's still working, we've got a keeper.
The Wow Factor
The wow factor BROKE the Richter Scale, amp is amazing at low, medium, and high volumes, the pre amp does all the work so do not be afraid if you cant crank it at your home, this amp's volume is very adjustable. this amp is worth every penny. I was seriously considering a Laney IRT60w head, which is a very very good amp, but this amp takes the cake!

"Perfection is Impossible? False"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars

While I've not listened to and more importantly played through every amp there is, I've played on the "big" ones... Marshall, Randall, Vox, Hughes & Kettner and even Mesa/Boogie. And the Mesas are incredible (but pricey). Marshall are overrated IMO (just loud with a lot of mid-range). EVH Gear, a brand of Fender Musical Instrument Company, has, however, hit a Grand Slam with this amp. First, let's discuss power. After much research, it turned out that 25-35 watts, 50 tops, is good enough. Live, you want just enough stage volume to hear yourself over the cymbals but not too much that the stage noise is absurd. With today's PAs, the on-stage speakers needn't be over 100dB; that's what the house PA is for. Instead I got a head I can plug into a 4x12 OR a 1x12 cab, thanks to the unique selectable impedance switch. I have NEVER heard reverb built into an amp I liked; it always had that painful ringing bell after-sound I hated. I wanted an amp with a SIMPLE effects loop instead, which this one has. I wanted an amp with the only 3 channels I need: clean, high gain, and lead high gain--with a Clean channel that sounds GOOD--and this one has that good CLEAN sound only a Fender-modeled amp can deliver. Don't confuse me with "combining" channels so I'm tap-dancing with the floor switch to try and go between clean to lead, to gain, back to lead, back to clean if I want; give me a switch that lets me step on the channel I want--just like this one, never seen that anywhere else with all of these other features too. I wanted an amp that wasn't riddled with endless knobs and buttons, and this one isn't--unlike a lot of other amps. Since the guitar tone I strive for is along the lines of Chris DeGarmo or Warren DeMartini, I needed that deep, full, warm and crunchy tone with those intangible harmonics that I can only hear on Fender Hot Rod Deluxe but with the High Gain channel that they don't have so I can climb up above the mix during solos--which is what THIS amp gave me. Before the EVH 5150 III MX, I would have had to drop Mesa/Boogie-level cash to get this much performance, quality and functionality out of a single amp head. I couldn't stop playing 2-3 hours a day almost every day when I first bought it because when the tone sounds this good, you cannot stop playing!

This head is amazing! If it's good enough for Eddie, it's good enough for me. All three channels sound great. The cleans are beautiful. Channel 2 is great for rock. And channel 3 is awesome for metal. No matter what settings, the amp sound amazing. I also love the headphone jack, so I can play at night. The ivory finish is a nice touch. It stands out from all of my other black amps. The amp is built very well and so is the footswitch. This is a killer price on an awesome amp. Don't let the 50 watts fool you. This thing can get LOUD! It doesn't have a ton of buzzing, or annoying noises, even at higher volumes with tons of gains. I actually don't even use an OF pedal on this amp. I can get all the gain and killer tone straight from the amp. Buy this amp. You WILL NOT regret it!

"Best amp under $1000"

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
What can I say. You want a high gain amp that still has a halfway usable clean channel? This is the one. Look no further. Read all the reviews you want, you'll end up back here. This is hands down the best amp in its class under $1000. You can get nice clean sounds (even with EMG pups) on channel 1. Some gritty dirt for anything from blues to AC/DC, even some harder stuff on channel 2. And channel 3? Wow, this is the money shot here. Channel 3 has more gain on tap than most people will ever need. Even if you play death/doom metal, you can likely still get a sound you can use on this thing. Did I mention how loud this thing is? It will rattle your windows without going past noon. But, it does sound decent turned down to bedroom levels. On top of that, it has a headphone jack on the back that mutes the cab for late night jamming. I havent yet tried this feature, but from what I understand is that it uses a pretty good cab simulator through the headphones, so it sounds decent. Of course there are going to be a couple (small) things that make it 4 stars for me, rather than 5. First, I wish it had an attenuator like the combo model does. Unfortunately theres just no room for one in this mini head. Still, it would be nice to get that nice tube-driven sound at lower levels. Second, the volume jump from channel 1 to channel 2 (shared EQ) makes it difficult to use all 3 channels at once. I understand that this is fixable with a multi-effects MIDI setup using the "4 cable method". That will likely be my next purchase. Do not let any of this stuff sway you from buying this beast of an amp. If you're like me, you researched nearly every current amp on the market looking for that perfect match. You wont find a more perfect match for this price point. Trust me.

This is definitely the best amp I have EVER owned! I have been through a ton of different heads, Included 100 watt Marshall’s to Carvin To Line 6, This one blows them out of the water. From the full and rich cleans (no twang) that you get from the green Channel to the Blue Channels more hard rock/groove metal tone, it stands alone in power and versatility. Hit the red Channel for over the top distortion worthy of the Metal Gods!!! I play this amp through the 4x12 EVH cabinet with a boss NS-2 Noise suppressor Pedal and a Boss DD6 Digital Delay Pedal, and the sound is amazing. I recommend this amp to any and all guitarists, it rules!!!!!!!

"fell in love with an amp."

Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
after playing an orange rockerverb 50 mkii for 3 years and being very happy with it, i got the evh 5150iii 50w for kicks, and that is exactly what it does. it kicks. hard. good by to the fizzy crunch and hello to true tonal awesomeness. everything i want this amp to do, it does with very little effort. as loud as i need it to be, cleans up beautifully using a volume pedal. can get brutal if needed. will i ever use anything more than the blue channel? probably not because of its versatility. if it were the only channel on the amp it would be worth the grand. the clean channel is great, but yes, there is significant volume drop between green and blue, and the red channel is unreal gain wise, but more than i would ever use. the effects loop is great, the channel pedal is solid. the only thing i would change is i would put the power and standby on the front of the amp. i wasnt even aware at the time of purchase that i had an active search for tone, but it is over. best amp i have ever played through.
Sound
nails every aspect of the sound i am looking for. adds a bit more musicality than my other amp.
Features
happy with all components of the amp, but would put power/standby on front. love the jjs.
Ease of Use
took one minute to find THE tone i love.
Quality
seems solid, and it is gorgeous.
Value
$1100 less than my next favorite amp, how does that explain the value? the blue channel is worth every penny of the price of thos amp all by itself.
The Wow Factor
i plugged in and did not touch anything but the volume and was instantly floored. the wow besides its tone is how killer it looks. i got the ivory.

"EVH Eddie Van Halen 5150 III Head 50 watt Ivory White"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)

This amp is great!
Sound
The sound quality of this amplifier is exceptional! The sound responds to my playing really in volume. With passive or active pickups, you can really feel the dynamics of the amplifier come into play when you pick a note differently than other ones. I did not buy this amp to sound like EVH, however EVH does have a gnarly guitar tone that I do enjoy. The amp however can go from blazing scooped metal tone to the thick and bluesy sound of a clean Tele or LP. The amp is very responsive to the EQ settings and effects. I have noticed that when compared to the EQ settings in other amps, I have to push the Mid's a bit more than in other amps to hear it. This amp is supposed to have a scooped sound naturally, I understand that, but if you dial in the Mid's just right with a balance of high's and Presence then you will get a very good creamy chunky guitar tone.
Features
The amp has alot of useful features. I would recommend reading thoroughly in the zzounds info page about the amp to get a listing of all features.
Ease of Use
Amp is easy to use after you READ THE USER MANUAL. It is a Tube amplifier so there is a method to turn the amp on and off. But this is nothing specific to this product, all tube amps have this type of requirement.
Quality
The product is made very well. The only issue is that some of the nuts on the face of the amp (input jack) will get loose and I have to tighten them up every so often. My guitar has this issue, which I have fixed with Red Thread Lock, I do not wish to ever chance staining my amp so I will just live with having to adjust the nuts every so often.
Value
This product to me is worth the price. $1k for a good amp is a good deal. It is alot of money especially if you are a teenager and just want to rock out. but stay in school and stay out of trouble and you'll be able to get one! Zzounds' pay as you play program helped me out with this one and I bought this amp when I was 18 making Minimum Wage! Very affordable.
Manufacturer Support
The company that "made" this amp is Fender. Fender is one of the top musical instrument manufactures of today's time. I have no had to deal with them, but I imagine that if I have to in the future, that they will treat me just like any other company will (good or bad).
The Wow Factor
The amp is White and for a guitar amplifier that is the first thing you notice when people come to visit me at my house. Then they will notice the tone and then they will realize I suck at guitar!

The 5150iii is a surprisingly versatile amp. The hype around the 5150 amp was always around how dirty and heavy it could get. The clean channel was often lacking and overlooked. I was pleasantly surprised by the clean tones i was able to get from this revamped evh model. The amp can pull off some nice clean tones similar to that of a fender tube amp with the right guitar and proper settings. It definately lives up to its name when in the overdrive channels. In my opinion it can be a bit over the top on the red channel if the gain is turned passed 4.5 (great for extreme forms of metal music though) The blue channel is where it truely shines. It can go from dirty blues to metal in this channel without losing its clarity and focus. Another cool addition that i must mention is the fx loop toggle on the footswitch. You can instantly activate and deactivate the fx loop with the click of the switch (very convenient for live gigging). When i was looking to purchase this amp, i was worried that it'd be too loud (i live in an apartment) but found that the 50 watt output was perfect for bedroom practicing all the way up to gigging a decent sized venue. The build is also very sturdy, a definate plus for a gigging guitarist like myself. In my experience the evh 5150iii has proven to be a steady workhorse for a price I can afford. Its not a diezel or an engl so don't expect it to be for 999$. It is a steal at this price for what i recieved in return though. Overall i am very pleased with this amp as it meets my needs in terms of quality, sound, and features. If it was stolen i would replace it without having to think twice.

This amp has tone for any style. It's very touch sensitive, a rare thing in such a high gain monster. Full rich sound with balance and clarity. The blue channel is so versatile it's worth the price alone. THE brown sound in spades. The red channel is mayhem. More gain than you'll ever need but it doesn't hide your guitar's tone. You can go from hard rock to the meanest metal sounds you've ever heard. The clean can get country jangle, warm jazz or old school crunch. More than enough power to hang with a band and all in a compact design. Eddie knows what he's doing!

Honestly, this is probably the best new amp you can buy for $1k. Just an overall great sounding amp. Extremely versatile on the gain side. The midrange has a pretty different response than the Peaveys, giving it the ability to cover a lot more ground. Definitely has less grindiness to the Peaveys, which is why my 5150 212 combo is still my all time favorite amp. The biggest reason I am keeping this one is because of the convenience of having a giggable amp in such a small package. Between the 35 pound weight and the small size, this thing is so easy to move around. Taking it to and from practice and shows seriously makes this thing a no brainer for any weekend warrior gigging musician who needs 2 excellent sounding channels (Volume jump between 1/2 makes it really difficult to use both channels without adjusting knobs). Add to that the fact that you have midi capabilities and its even better. Kruse Kontrol mods can swap out the knobs on Ch1/2 to make the concentric pots, so you basically split out the 2 channels. I might have this done at some point, but I really dont use ch2 for anything anyway. Overall, this thing is amazing and is going to make my gigging life a lot easier.

First and foremost if you ever say this amp doesn't have enough gain you NEED to get your ears checked!! and also you loose all credibility for anything you you say regarding Amps... I bought this amp because I collect high gain amps, i play in a progressive metal band and a hard rock band. And let me just make this simple, and easy. BRUTAL CHUG??: check!! This this is 100% pure BEEF no filler CLARITY??: check!!! The crunch channel covers everything it's got all the gain you need, roll back on the gain and those complex chord structures shine like you want them to. Trust me... CLEAN???: check!! I mean fender has the brains behind this one so the clean channel I would have expected to be great and it is! It's bright like you would expect and it has nice body which is important to me I need the clean to be full.. A nice reverb pedal and delay will suit well with that channel. I could go on about this amp but I think you get the point just buy it! The build quality is there tone is there "believe in yourself just do it!!!!"

this amp is incredible, it does it all and does it very very well. The deth metal kiddies complaining about it not having enough gain have either has not played through it or just plain don't know what they are talking about.. From crystal clean to MarkV midrange bark it delivers. My only complaint like most is the channel volume jump between channels 1 and 2. Since I find that 1 and 3 and my volume knob on my guitar is all I need with this amp I just don't use it. And FINALLY integrated midi!! Makes my pedal board and racks all play nice. Did I mention volume? Plenty for stage studio or where ever. If you need more your deaf..

You literally do not need to even entertain the idea of buying another amp ever. 50 watts is MORE THAN ENOUGH. Plus 7 12ax7's and the tubes are stock JJ tubes. It doesn't get any better than this. Crystal clean on channel 1. Early VH and bluesy on Channel 2. Channel three is a MONSTER. All the gain you would ever need. You'll never need an overdrive pedal again. The effects loop is tremendous as well. Couldn't tell you about the midi thing because I'm not a midi guy, but everything on this amp is flawless. I love it. LAST AMP I'LL ever buy.....

"What more could you want in an amp?!"

I have been a long time player that has bounced around between amps for years. Always struggling with balance between cleans, crunch, and leads. I no longer have to worry about that thanks to the great folks at Fender/EVH Channel 1: with the gain at 6 or lower you get some excellent cleans that you would expect from a fender. and if you push the gain a little higher it breaks up a little and sounds awesome! I personally like to put the gain around 8 and roll back my volume knob a little. Channel 2 (my personal favorite): delivers a nice thick midrange with tight low end that starting with the gain at 3 can take you from classic rock, to modern rock, up to a nice metal tone without ever having to push the gain passed 8. Finally channel 3: what more is there to say about this channel. Its mean, its intense, and there is more gain available on this channel then I could ever use. Nice and tight low ends, snappy mids, and killer highs can all be achieved depending on how you EQ it. Pros: - well balanced amp between beautiful cleans up to soaring leads - headphone jack - master presence and resonance controls - easy to use - solid construction - 50 watts at 4, 8 or 16 ohms - includes a rugged 4 button footswtich (channels 1-3 and effects loop bypass) - midi in Cons: Channels 1 and 2 share the same EQ and volume controls slight difference in volume between channels 1 and 2

Got the EVH 5150III 50 watt version. Sounds killer through a Marshall 1960 B. Took about 2 weeks of playing with it to get the sound I wanted. I use my Line 6 POD HD300 mainly just for the noise reduction to eliminate the feedback. Definitely worth the $1000

All I can say about this amp is WOW! I was totally blown away. I couldn't listen to one local before I ordered and almost passed it up because of that but am so glad I didn't. This is by far the best sounding amp I've ever owned. I thought it sounded good at lower volumes but when I jammed with my drummer at volume it really came to life. I have it paired with a 4x12 cabinet and this thing is a beast! I now have the best sound I've ever had and am only using a simple little delay and chorus pedal in the loop for effects. Don't let anyone fool you though it's really a two channel amp the way they have it designed if you want "pristine cleans" but if you don't mind some dirt in your cleans and you set the "shared" gain at about noon there is no volume difference between the channels 1 and 2 and you can then use all three channels. When you kick it to channel 3 however you better be prepared to hold on because you will have awaken the beast inside this amp. More gain than you will even need. Very smooth sounding and not muddy even at high, high gain settings. You will need no boost pedal with this one but you will need a noise gate to tame it.........

Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)

Nice clean. Killer "Brown Sound" and SLO tone for the unwashed masses
Sound
Clean - The parent company is Fender so the clean is very good. Sparkling and bright at around 9 o'clock. As you turn up the gain, it starts to snarl. Pick light or turn down the guitar and it cleans up a bit. Crunch - Brown Sound! This is what you buy the amp for. I love this channel. When it's at lower volumes, I turn the gain up pretty high. When the volume gets around 9 o'clock it starts to distort more and I actually have to turn the gain down! It isn't as loose as a Marshall so one's technique is more apparent. Lead - It sounds like a Soldano SLO to my ears. The difference between them is the SLO is stiff and VERY unforgiving, to me anyway (oh yeah... and $3000 more,LOL) I keep the gain knob below 12 o'clock because the gain is HIGH! No Tubescreamer or boost pedal needed. Tight low end, zero "flubbyness" 5 out of 5 for tone on all three channels!
Features
The good: 3 channels, great tone, midi switching and plenty of volume... Now the bad... Effects loop - I was excited that the loop was switchable. A lot of amps come with loops but many of them aren't switchable. I guess I got spoiled by the loop on my Marshall JVM410HJS. The loop on the 5150 isn't very transparent. The first thing I tried through it was a TC Electronic G-Major. This works PERFECTLY through my JVM but was completely unusable through the EVH. So I tried a Boss DD-6, which works well with most anything, and I wasn't impressed. This amp seems to sound best (to my ears anyway) with nothing in the loop and just a true-bypass wah & noise gate out front. Shared channels 1 & 2 - This is the complaint I hear most about this amp. The problem isn't the shared EQ, it's the shared volume and tone. The volume difference between clean and crunch is insane. One way to help this is to keep the gain at 12 o'clock or higher. But this results in the clean being a bit dirty. Light picking and guitar volume reduction helps this a bit. Another option is to send it out to Voodoo Amps and have the mod done which adds a separate volume and tone BUT that voids the 5 year warranty. Preamp out - This isn't a major complaint. I mike my amps to record tracks but what a difference between line outs in amps. The line out on the JVM sounds GREAT. The preamp/line out on the EVH not so much.
Ease of Use
Easy as pie. Plug and play.
Quality
The amp seems well made. Made in Mexico seems to mean quality these days, at least at this factory.
Value
For $1000, it doesn't get much better than this.
Manufacturer Support
N/A
The Wow Factor
It is a good looking amp for sure.

I play for the metal band "Smoke Signals" and in my band I need something that has a whole lot of balls and crunch but has a lot of clarity. this Amp is absolutely perfect for me. I wish the power and standby switches and the resonance knob were on the front. I'm really excited that i got this head on nothing but word of mouth and a hunch that is was going to be awesome. the second i plugged it in and dialed a 2 minute tone...I was blown awayI haven't had to deal with Tech support so far so i left the stars blank on that one haha

The amp had a bad preamp tube in v5 right out of the box...but I wanted to try and fix it...so I replaced tubes one at a time until I found the culprit. Also the gain was far more than I would use...so I reduced it by changing a few tubes to 12at7's...WOW!! The amp now is in my preferred gain range...and the clean is amazing. Best amp I've ever used...and I've owned a lot....over 20 years. The midi is a great feature also...I use my fx pedal to switch amp Channels too...sweet. ;) so with a little know how and effort I have my dream amp. Thanks zZounds and evh!

I love this amp! It will do whatever you need to do. The blue channel is my favorite. I haven't had a chance to tune in the red channel to get a useful sound for me yet. Red channel has tons of gain! The green channel (clean) is a Fender clean. Literally, it's made by Fender and sounds great! You can turn up the gain on the green channel and get a sweet crunch!

Eddie has given us the perfect amp. 50 watts into the 4 speaker evh cabinet can be devastating loud with no break up at all. Blue channel at 7 oclock gain is rock perfection, red channel is really compressed and rounds out your leads without losing harmonics. Green channel shares gain with blue so it will always be dirty if you want the blue channel to rock. Red channel cannot be dialed down enough to sound like blue so you will always have a dirty clean. The harmonic range of this amp is awesome, pick attack response is awesome. This amp is everything I wanted my Marshall to be, I am afraid that my 2 year old Marshall is as obsolete as my two year old pc. This Evh amp requires two pedals delay & reverb thats it everthing else is in this amps sound. Bought it from zzsounds best deal fast shipping.

I have only had the amp for a short time, but so far I love it! This amp is the greatest amp I've owned in my 30 years of playing. I loved my Marshall JCM800 but this thing kills it! the two improvements I would love to see would be to even out the volume switch between Channel 1 and 2. and to add a reverb but even without it has a great variety of tones that cover everything I need in an amp. I mainly play variations of channel 2 using channel 3 as a boost. Channel 2 will get super dirty if you choose and channel 3 is completely insane. I can't speak for the support as of yet since the amp has played flawlessly since I got it. The quality of the amp is great. well made and very appealing to the eye. Highly recommend.

"Great for recording, Horrible Live"

Overall: 2.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
Overall this is a great sounding amp, but the biggest issue, and not one to be taken lightly, is the massive jump between channel 1 and channel 2 in terms of volume. Since the two channels share controls, there is no way around this in a practical sense.
Sound
Channel 1 - Amazing clean tones. Warm and deep but very articulate highs. All-in-all one of the best clean tones I've had.Channel 2 - OD - Strong overdrive channel. Great sounding, but since it shares all controls with Channel 1, the jump in volume is ridiculous. The tone is powerful and not muddy at all, but you need to choose either Channel 1 or Channel 2 and stick with it if you're playing live.Channel 3 - Lead - Features tone similiar to Channel 2, but with more gain. Since it has it's own controls, its much more versatile. WIth the gain between 4 and 7 you get a strong classic/hard rock sound, 7-10 give you an even heavier tone. There is also a sweet spot just a hair below 1 that gives you an amazing blues lead tone. CONS - I'm really going to hammer down the Channel 1/2 having the same controls as a MAJOR downfall. Both Channel 2 and 3 could use a little more Low end response (not a huge deal, but worth mentioning)
Features
It has all your standard features, I don't feel I have anything to add to the description.
Ease of Use
On a Channel by Channel basis, each can get an amazing tone. This would be a great amp for doing any recording, but in a Live setting this amp would be difficult to use without a Boost to the clean, or some kind of limiter on the OD channels.
Quality
Beautiful amp, built very well.
Value
Like I've said before, it's a great amp, but I think this could use a price cut down to maybe the $700 mark.
Manufacturer Support
N/A
The Wow Factor
The amp itself I really liked. I am returning this Item, because I don't feel I can use it in the sense that I need to. If it had 3 separate channel controls ( I believe the early models did) I would definitely hang onto this one.
