I was very impressed with this guitar. I wanted the binding and better finish of a Les Paul Standard but really couldn't afford the two grand. I am very happy with my Pelham Blue Model. I got this, a Gator Case and a strap for just over five bills.
Sound
This is my first Les Paul style guitar. To be honest I wanted this for a beefier sound and to get rid of the hum of single coils. I may change out the pickups eventually, but for now they do a pretty good job
Features
Very basic. Though I didn't want the veneer top, or coil splitting. For me simpiler is always better....
Ease of Use
Plug in, tune, play....
Value
This product is an amazing value. Even with swapping pickups this would be less than the Gibson Faded series.

The Wow Factor
Just a great deal..I love the limited edition color...And for me I love guitars so much. I rather be able to buy a new one every year than save up and have something I would be afraid to play because I spent thousands on it and it might get scratched.....In eight months (Once this is paid for) I will definetly be buying another Epiphone.

This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
I have always wanted to have a Les Paul. Their sound is so versatile and distinctive whether it is used in rock, pop, blues, or reggae. I wanted the sustain. I wanted to play a note and have it last for a day if I wanted it to do that. I bought the Epi Standard Les Paul, a blemished model, for 305. I did not expect much, but I was so so surprised. First, the guitar was beautiful, hand crafted in China with that heavy mahogany body that is so characteristic of the Les Paul. The long neck had a wonderful feel making it so easy to bar chords and reach frets with my pinky that I could not on my Rickenbacker Dakota. Finally I plugged it in, and the sound was unbelievable. A real Les Paul sound for 300 bucks. WOW! What a steal! I am so happy. I purchased a hundred hard case for it the next week, because I really treasure this guitar. It is a work of art. I have recorded with it already and the sound is clean and powerful. I used a Fender Twin with compression and chorus. What a sound! Thank you Epiphone for giving us poor musicians a chance to own and play a real Les Paul. zZounds thank you for the incredible deal. All of you, be on the lookout for the blemished guitars, They are truly incredible and can make your dream guitar affordable and a reality. The setup on this guitar was perfect. I did not need to work the truss rod or to spend time on the intonation or raising or lowering the strings. Even at 419.00 dollars, this guitar is a steal. Highly recommend this beauty. Epiphone is my new guitar company. They make a great guitar. I have the J-45 limited edition as well. It is awesome!

I recently took up classical guitar to satisfy college electives and it started a fire inside of me. Although I have only been playing for a little over a year and a half, I have learned a great deal about the instrument. Very recently I have started to explore music outside of the classical realm, which in turn, led to me seeking another quality instrument. I ordered the tv silver model but received the metallic gold by mistake. The finish of the guitar is amazing and the quality of craftsmanship is impressive for such a low price. I paired the guitar with a vox pathfinder 10 practice amp, and after a few minutes of playing I was in love. It was incredibly difficult to pack it back up and ship it back to the returns department simply because I could not put it down.

My husband and I are very impressed with the guitar, it is beautiful! It came in a well packaged box, my son was very surprised it was his 17th birthday and I took the guitar out of the box and put a pair of shoes in there to throw him off. He plays this great sounding guitar 3 to 4 hours everyday. Guitar sounds really great, The hardware is really nice and really sets off the guitar. We have about 8 different guitars and none have the sound that this one does.

Musical Background:

My husband and our two sons play, bass, electric, acoustic and piano, my 2 daughters play the flute and the piano

"My Epiphone Gold Top Les Paul Standard"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
A great sounding guitar. I'm very pleased with my Gold top Les Paul Standard. I just wish they would consider putting the push/pull coil-tapping on this guitar and it would be awesome.
Sound
I like how it gives you the sound of a much more expensive guitar. It gives you the sound for a low price.
Features
Other than maybe they could later on add the push/pull coil-tapping to this guitar I don't think there is anything I would change to the Les Paul Standard.
Ease of Use
I had great sound from my Standard right out of the box. I had to tune it then she was ready to go! and she did go. she sounded great.
Quality
When I opened the box and first seen my Gold Top I was in AWE over her beauty. I took her out and looked over her very closely and I will say the craftsmanship was amazing. The head stock was beautiful and flawless. The fretboard was nice and without any problems. The body was perfect not a scratch or nick on her. well balanced and just an overall great instrument.
Value
I feel this guitar is worth more then they are asking for it. I was considering buying a Gibby but I think Epiphone is the brand I'm going to keep with. They make good affordable guitars that really sound great.
Manufacturer Support
I had to call Epiphone once about my Tribute Plus's pickup but it was something the customer service operator was able to help me with. And yes he was well knowledged in guitars and service.
The Wow Factor
My WOW factor is the sound a Les Paul makes. I could make music with a Dean, BC Rich or a Fender but there is something about a Les Paul. And I think the Les Paul Standard sets the Standard for which all Les Paul's are made. It's a wonderful guitar and I'm looking forward to making music with my Gold Top Standard for many many years to come. GREAT JOB EPIPHONE!!!!!

I just received my Cardinal Red model...I bought the last one zZounds had in stock (along with an Epiphone hard shell "blemished" case that had a microscopic smudge on it)...glad I pulled the trigger - beautiful finish, well built, nice set neck...had to tweak the action a tad to my liking, but sweet. Grover's keep it in tune, and the tone is awesome. I highly recommend this axe for anyone's collection. This is my third zZounds guitar purchase, and these folks are simply the best. If you're looking for a great sounding quality made Les Paul you really need to check out this guitar.I purchased the cardinal red with the cream bindings and chrome hardware and let me tell you,it is a gorgeous guitar. It was set up nice and had no fret buzz and the string action was spot on.I had it playing in about 10 minutes right out of the box and the intonation was perfect with no bridge adjustments at all.I play rock and blues mostly but enjoy playing hard rock and some metal now and then.I plugged into my late 70's peavey classic tube combo amp and the tone was rich and warm on the cleans and with the volume knobs turned up it has that well cherished les paul growl.I'm pretty impressed with this guitar, the quality is more like something 2,3 times the price.

I picked this guitar over the Gibson Les Paul Studio I tried. The ease of play-ability and the super look is what SOLD me. Gibson is a great Guitar but for price and flexibility you can't beat an Epiphone version ! It needed to be set up, as out of the box wasn't done very well. I added a tronical tuner to it and now its Totally awesome !
Sound
I've tried a lot of Les Pauls. This one works with almost every style I play. Plays like a dream.
Features
All the basics without a lot of useless knobs and switches. The neck is smooth, pickups are great. Finish is flawless.
Ease of Use
I added a tronical tuner to this set-up and it added a lot of ease for tuning. I run this through a Bugera 55 watt Tube head, 412 cab and a Fender Mustang Floor. ALL from Zzounds!!! Sound is totally AWESOME !!!
Quality
Very well crafted. Finish is flawless. Neck is smooth and the electronics are top quality. I may change a few things over time. But its also great just the way it is !
Value
Great Value !

The Wow Factor
The Gold Top Finish is flawless. Weight is nice. Over all look has all my friends envious.

Just got an Epi Les Paul in cardinal red from zZounds. I am thrilled with this guitar, I've own many Gibson and Epiphone Les Pauls in my over 50 years of playing and this one takes the prize. I first ordered a PRS standard 24, and was unhappy with it, and the guys at zZounds were great getting in traded back towards the Les Paul. While the PRS seemed cheap, The epi sounded and felt like a good guitar should. It hangs with the gibsons at a fraction of the price. Do youself a favor, if you need a les paul and don't want to spend big bucks go with this Epi for under 500.00.

I was in the market for a Les Paul. this one is the basic Paul formula and I wasn't concerned with coil taps or the like. I chose the cardinal red finish, this was the only Epiphone with that finish so this it for me. I ordered this guitar late on a Wednesday, Zzounds shipped it out the next day. It arrived on my doorstep Saturday morning. I did not get a chance to unpack it until Sunday afternoon. I was floored with the beauty of the red finish, however, on further inspection I discovered a crack in the finish from inside the nut slot to about the 3rd fret on the back of the neck. This was not going to work for me so I immediately contacted Zzounds via email. They replied promptly on Monday morning and were happy to replace the guitar with another. I received the replacement yesterday (Friday) this one is perfect. Thank you Zzounds for quick action to stand behind the products you sell.

I bought this guitar because I've always wanted a gold top and this thing is flawless. It's funny because I ordered it and it arrived at my office and I had a gig that night. I used it that same night! I adjusted the action a little and used it that nigh factory strings and all! And to add to the experience, what a gig! The finish is just awesome. The metallic gold just pops! The pickups are really great too. I'm a dimarzio super distortion in my Les Paul kind of guy, but I debated not putting them in lol. All in all to say it's a great guitar for 400 bucks would be an understatement. This plays phenomenally and sounds nice and punchy. If you buy this you will not regret it ever.

From the Minute I Opened the Box I fell In love with this Guitar, I got the Limited Black One and that picture doesn't do it Justice it has a Black Metallic look to it with beautiful pearl Looking Trim, I'm a Metal Guitar Player and I absolutely love the Sounds I can get out of this Guitar. I have always been a big fan of Fender Guitars but I think I was one over by this Beautiful Les Paul, the only Negative thing I would have on this guitar is the Fret Buzz with the Strings when you first get it but with just minor Adjustment you can get it to where you want it. if your thinking about getting this Guitar I think you'll be Pleased. to me it was a good halfway point to just try a Les Paul before you decide to make the big leap to Purchase a Gibson which I will one day but I'm perfectly happy with this one for Awhile.

As an intermediate player, this guitar is perfect for me. I started out playing a Les Paul Junior about a year ago, that was handed down from my uncle and I loved the feel of the neck and fretboard. I tried to play other types of guitars and it just didn't feel right. I play mostly rock, raggae and blues and this guitar performs great and is very versitle.

I already own a Gibson Les Paul Signature T which I purchased through Zzounds. Not to knock the Gibson but this guitar plays and sounds just as good. The neck has nice feel to it, the pickups have a nice bite and sound real good when you roll back the volume. The Metallic Gold finish is stunning. I rated the Manufacturer at 5 even though I haven't had to use it. Excellent buy for the price, Thanks again zZounds for a great guitar and excellent service!!!

"Wow! Epiphone Has Raised The Bar."

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Verified Customer zZounds has verified that this reviewer made a purchase from us.
This review has been selected by our experts as particularly helpful.
I own nine Epiphone electric guitars with the oldest being a 1996 Les Paul Standard. It used to be that I bought them with the intention of installing better pickups (in the humbucker-equipped models). This is NO LONGER NECESSARY.
Sound
Once upon a time Epiphone made very good guitars with pickups, specifically the humbuckers, that were best suited for weighing down a stack of papers or throwing at the crows who eat my cat's food. A few years ago Epiphone upgraded their stock humbuckers to a level where they are competitive with Gibson & Seymour Duncan and this makes the new Epi Standards one of the Best Guitar Values to be found.
Features
The Les Paul Standard is an industry standard. It's simple but offers a wonderful palette of tonal colors. The upgraded Alnico Classic pickups are integral to this. While the older Epi pickups were often referred to as "mudbuckers", the new ones are on a par with the Gibson 490 series (which I love). I installed a Seymour Duncan "hot rod" set in a 2007 Epiphone LP Custom and I must say that I prefer the sound of the new Epi bridge pickup to the "JB".
Ease of Use
The current incarnation of the Epi Standard has a slightly thinner neck profile than my 2007 Custom which is nice for those of us not possessed of gargantuan hands like a certain British guitarist who is known for playing a '59 Sunburst. (Hello Jimmy!) The fretboard is advertised as rosewood but mine is black with milky white streaks and a very tight grain. It looks more like ebony than rosewood. Due to supply issues Epiphone sometimes has to use other woods. Maybe I got lucky, maybe they had some extra ebony fretboads. ;-}
Quality
Epiphone has some budget model Les Pauls that seem "cheap" but the Standard and Custom models are finely crafted and well worth the money. (I have five Epi Les Pauls so I know of which I speak.) Upgrading eventually to US made pots and switches is the only change I envision ever making on this guitar.
Value
With now-standard Grover tuners and the upgraded pickups, the new Epi Les Paul Standard is a serious bargain. The Studio and Special models may be attractive because of the lower prices but the Standard is WELL WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY.
Manufacturer Support
I've not had to contact Epiphone so I can't comment here.
The Wow Factor
Wow Factor... I'm a devotee of George Harrison and for many years have coveted his red 1957 Les Paul ("Lucy"). The Cardinal Red Epi Standard is as close as you can get without forking over a ton of cash. This shade of red is deep and quite striking to look at. The ad photos do not do justice to how truly beautiful this guitar really is. And the sound? Run it through the gain channel on a good amp... The upgraded pickups will have you saying "WOW!" before you even realize your lips are moving. And you'd better shout it out - this baby can get really loud. "You say you want a revolution?" Buy this guitar and get it going.

I found the Epiphone Les Paul to be just what I needed to round out a budding guitar collection. Plays well, set up out of the box and at 3/4 the cost of a Gibson. The finish was great, good color and very close to the original Gibson Goldtop. Epiphone has come a long way since I first heard about them. The guitar is beautiful. The one I received has a slight blemish under the gloss coat that's very hard to see unless searching for one. It is set up very nice though. The guitar came FILTHY. My fingertips were black from a little playing. I cleaned it up and it's very good looking. I could complain, but its well made and very playable. I've had worse experiences with Epiphone and other guitars. I'll keep it. I'd rather a slight cosmetic imperfection that one that affects the way it plays or sounds. I would however, send it back if I didn't already have upgrade pickups/hardware for it. The stock Epiphone hardware sucks like normal.

This is not my first Epi LP - I have owned two previously, over the last 20 years - but it will likely be my last. I say that because, like most of you who are looking here, I've been looking for a good quality Les Paul for a player like me who has chops and loves the sound, but cannot in any way justify the $2 or $3K (or more) for a Gibson standard. I picked up the gold top Epi Standard/Limited, and it more than fits the bill. It has very solid tone, amazing sustain, a groovy neck, none of that single-coil tapping nonsense. It is simply stunning to look at. It is a straight ahead rock and roll guitar. The finish is typically thick Epi, but the body and neck are really beautiful wood, as is the fretboard which has great character and is very smooth. Oh I modded a few things like dial pointers, reflector knobs and klusen-type tuner buttons, but otherwise it's stock. It is really a fantastic guitar and not nearly as far away from Gibson Standard as you would think. Nice job Epi.

For those looking for a fantastic guitar at a reasonable price, this is it. With a setup and good strings, this guitar plays as well as any I've ever handled. Comfortable weight, sleek neck, nice frets and the classic solid body humbucker sound. Excellent guitar right out of the box for everything from classic rock to jazz, southern rock, modern rock, alternative... You name it.
