This is truly a phenomenal piece of equipment. The preamp is extremely quiet for a consumer grade system. The expander/gate really helps tame echo/room noise. The de-esser is very good at eliminating most sibilance without losing vocal harmonics and the compressor evens out the incoming signal very smoothly; a little goes a long way. The manual that comes with the unit has some good suggestions for basic settings. I would not hesitate to buy this unit again.

Let me just say.. GREAT Customer service from Zzounds.com... and GREAT Product as well. The unit arrived on time. Before purchase, I called and talked to a rep and he took time to answer all of my questions about the product (considering it was listed as used) I had quite a few questions. He was very honest about the history and condition of the unit. So I took a chance on a this used (Blemished) item... with NO regrets to date. The DBX was in much better condition than advertised (Not a scratch on it).. still under warranty and with a full return policy intact....and it works as good as new. I saved some money and got a great unit. As soon as I hooked it up to my AKG and then to my MXL770, with a lttle tweeking to the settings for each mic, they both just came alive! I have had it for about 2 months with no problems.

I bought this here at zZOUNDS. It works great. Just get your settings correct from the left to right process and you’ll get a great vocal recording. If you do this correctly the mixing will be much better. Is there better channel strips? YES… Do you want to pay 2 grand? I don’t!!! I think my Shuresm7b loves this thing. The dbx 286S mic preamp is pretty clean...with great head room. The compressor, expander, de-esser and hi-low enhancer- plus the added gain out makes this strip a most desirable outboard addition to any studio. In comparison to virtual processors being used by popular DAW/Recording software, the dbx 286S offers greater control and versatility to every recording. The sound potential of this unit is very comparable to more expensive mic preamp strips. I recommend this unit for anyone using a microphone.

Device worked great for 5 recordings. Now it goes to static and cuts off - mid recording. It has to be turned off and on several times to make it work. When it works it is fantastic. The problem is it is unreliable and non functioning for most of the time.
