A great warm tube, two-channel mic preamp at a rock-bottom price. Plus, it makes bass and acoustic and electric guitars sound great.
It has long been known that a recording can be no better than the weakest link of the chain. More often than not, bands will invest thousands of dollars in great equipment, buy an excellent digital home recording console, and try to get by with cheap or inappropriate mics and/or preamps.
I have no really major complaints; more like personal preferences. For example, I would pay full price for a unit like this with
1) A headphone jack.
2) A pair of backlit, analog, retro-style VU meters.
3) A built-in spring reverb or other reverb unit; or some effects loop capability to facilitate the maximum functionality of this unit.
In summary, I find the Ultragain Pro to be a steal for the price. Some of the more famous brand one-channel tube preamps cost the same price for only channel and with much less flexibility in sound output.
And they both use the same preamp tube.
The 2200 is top-of-the-line quality and rugged durability for home recording and stage work--it's got more quality than you'll ever need untill you step into the big, professional studios and super-expensive equipment. But at that point you should stop and think about what it was that got you there.
