An excellent mic for instruments at a reasonable price. I use it on a fiddle in a small ensemble playing at coffeehouses. I use the clip to attach it to my chinrest and point the mic downward toward the bridge by adjusting the gooseneck. The mic stays on securely and gives excellent sound reproduction in this position. I do not use the included violin attachment accessory; it would orient the mic incorrectly to catch the high-frequency sounds of the instrument.

Musical Background:

I have played fiddle/classical violin for 10 years. I am just starting to do some small gigs.

Musical Style:

I play primarily Scottish and Scottish-influenced fiddle.

"Good for casual live performances. Garbage for professional recording."

Overall: 1.5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I gave it a 3 since it may work for live performers but not for professional recordings. It may sound good on a drumkit. I haven't tested it on drums.
Sound
Good for live performance, terrible for recording. Violin Mount useless. Just purchased this mic anticipating it's multiple uses on different acoustic instruments. Being a multi-instrumentalist, sound engineer and composer, playing and recording over 20 different instruments in a less than sound proof studio, I thought I purchased the perfect mic. CON: It lacks the high end and sounds very muddy. Sounds almost as if there's a low pass filter on it. It starts to weaken at around 700hz. It doesn't record the overtones and harmonics of instruments. I played around with the placement of the mic on each instrument and each placement and instrument had similar problems with the frequencies. I currently own a AT2020 and AT2021 and even though it's less than half the price of the ATM350, the sound is superior to the ATM350. Even with the bassier instruments (ei. Cello) it didn't sound good since it was lacking the rich overtones of the instrument. Also the violin/viola/cello mount clips on well but is not the best mic placement. I found that if I used the regular clip and clipped it on the bridge with the microphone hovering straight above the finger board near the center, it sounded a bit better. Having the mic behind the bridge creates a harsh and brassy sound. PRO: It barely records environmental noise. The room noise sounds at least 12dB or 2x quieter than the AT2020. I put the tv on in the background while recording and it didn't pick it up while I was playing the instrument. It focuses on the sound and negates all other sounds. It can also handle high spf levels which is rare for a condenser mic. I can see how the mic would be a hit for live performers since it reduces the chances of feedback due to the focused diaphragm and suppresses outside noise from picking up. The best instruments for the mic: Harp Violin/viola if you don't use the violin mount Oboe if you clamp it on the right hand thumb rest sax The worst instruments for the mic: Bassoon, clarinet, flute, cello
Features
Good clamp Terrible violin mount. Wrong placement for mic
Ease of Use
Can't always clip it on the bell of instruments. Violin mount is useless, the sound is horrible when placed behind the bridge. I had to tape it to different areas on my instruments to get the optimal sound
Quality
Looks and feels very high quality. Too bad the sound isn't good.
Value
Too expensive for a shorter/lighter pencil mic with a clip. The AT2021 sounds 100X better is only a fraction of the price.
