It is very good for not only audio input but output too. It does a good job at that. The recording software that comes with the Aardvark is pretty difficult to understand if you are like me and have never messed with the recording spectrum of music. It took me a couple of weeks to figure out how to record with Cakewalk 9.0 (DUH). I still haven"t figured everything out yet after 2 months. (DUH AGAIN?) Oh well. However I can see the potential of this program if I could just understand it better. It seems better than Acid music 3.0.

I bought a demo model of this unit which had no owners manual, so I called Aardvark's support and they immedately sent one out to me, no questions asked. I am glad it comes with Cakewalk now, when I bought it it came with Samplitude (which I don't use). The price has not gone down on these units in the past year and a half, I think it's actually gone up. The sound quality has been supurb and totally clear of extranious noise. My only real gripe with this unit is that it doesn't support Windows2K (which is inifinitely more stable than Windows98). The cable from the breakout box to the computer card is also very short which may mean you have to keep your computer close to your recording space. The problem with this is that you may wind up having to work at stifling the hum of your computer fans while you are trying to record. However, this last problem seems common to all the digital cards with breakout boxes. I put my computer in one room and run the cable for the breakout box under the closed door into the other room; not real elegant, but it works. The software interface is excellent too and is very easy to use, see Aardvarks site for some screen shots. The only DSP on this unit is Reverb, since I have a decent powerful computer and use plug ins instead, the lack of additional DSPs doesn't bother.

I'm new to this home recording stuff and the Aardvark and break out box were easy to install, Tech Support was extremely helpful and responsive, the sound is great. The price was actually worth it since it came bundled with Cakewalk which i needed to purchase anyway, so in the long run i actually SAVED money by going with this rather than another product. My friends can come over with their gear and plug up, jam out, Tah DAH!!!

Feature:
I wish the headphone output had volum control. Would be nice if they offered the H-Z guitar inputs too, like on the Q10. Gigastudio compatible!

Quality:
Extremely durable. Who else would have thought of inputs that accept both XLR and 1/4 ? Totally awesome sound quality.

Value:
It's still a bit pricy for a product that is getting relatively old in tech terms (more than 3.5 years old now, I believe.) Still, there's nothing else like it on the market.

Sound:
Great pre-amp sound. Take advantage of the extremely low noise on pre-amps and combine it with a Mic with low self noise (Rode NT1000), and you'll get a ton of intimacy and detail. Of course, this is with a little EQ and there. But that's the beauty of it. The ultra low noise, really makes the process of using some EQ shine on an NT1000.

Overall:
It will be my main unit for quite a long time!

Preamps are very clear, sound fantastic. Very good value because you dont need a mixer.

I do rock and roll and have tried M Audio card, the Direct Pro is much cleaner sounding

I have a mobile recording business and have 3 of the Direct Pro 2496 cards. They work great, and the sound quality is excellent. And by the way, yes Samplitude does work very well with this card.

This damn thing is great. Used to have an old soundblaster and crappy mic pres. This Direct Pro unit has better than average mic preamps, and now I have MIDI and digital I/O too. Using with Sonar on Xp and no problems mate.

The combination XLR & 1/4" inputs are invaluable for a home studio. Unless you need more than 4 simultaneous inputs, the Direct Pro 24/96 is my best pick.
