Waldorf 2-Pole Desktop Analog Filter
We guitar players don't see too many synth-y envelope filters out there like this. Some of the old-school ones on the market are a bit funky sounding, but maybe that’s not what you're going for. The Waldorf 2-Pole is a rad oddball of a filter that will find itself more at home on top of a pedal-tweaker's amp rather than on the floor, as it's not a stompbox -- once you've plugged in, it's on. It's loaded with some super-smeary oscillators that will psych out your guitar, and, more importantly, the crowd. It gets better -- the 2-Pole is also loaded with a gnarly-sounding drive and envelope filter that adds some quacky snap to face-melting synth bass. Plug in, aim speaker away from face, rock it, and tweak it.

Celestion G12-35XC 90th Anniversary Guitar Speaker, 8 Ohms
If you've got a vintage combo, and you fry a speaker in it, what are your options? Re-cone? Scour eBay? Drop in a new one? Re-coning is a toss-up -- who knows what you'll get back? The speaker you picked up in an online auction might work for a month, yet new ones zap your mojo. Since we all love buzzwords, here's a new one: "Pulsonic." Most folks go the Greenback route for a vintage replacement for a 412 or a 112, and that's cool for your garden-variety '70s rock. Vintage 30s need a bit more power behind them to really sing. It's cool for modern rock without sounding really modern -- just a little of that vintage-y "warmth". So, here we have this "Pulsonic" speaker, with a little higher wattage than a Greenback. It would be a really good choice for someone that's got an old Univox, Supro or some other super-vibey '60s amp. With speakers, it's always a really subtle difference, but the difference between this and, say, a Greenback is best equated to early-'60s Ventures tones vs. '70s Alice Cooper tones. They're both rock, but different types. See?

PRS Paul Reed Smith Archon 25/13 Watt Guitar Combo Amplifier (1x12")
The PRS Archon Combo amp is a serious contender in the world of high-gain amplifiers, and for good reason. The saturation that you can achieve is clear and defined, while retaining a lot of the basic characteristics that your pickups provide. In so many words, your tone is preserved even on higher-gain settings, which gives the amp applications from all types of rock, to metal and anything in between. The controls and layout are incredibly simple and user-friendly, but offer enough control over your tone to satisfy even the most finicky of tone-shapers out there. The low end was fat and sounded crushing on palm mutes and power chords, and the leads were not overly bright or harsh. Overall, this amp is superb and certainly worthy of all of the attention it's received.

Dunlop EP101 Echoplex Preamp Pedal
There's not much that hasn't already been said about the legendary Echoplex unit, because it just works. Now that Dunlop has released this pedal, the Echoplex can be added to your chain easily and affordably. The EP101 pedal itself is a no-brainer: one knob and one switch. The cool part, though, is that once you turn the Gain knob up, it imparts its own asymmetrical clipping for a little bit of dirt of its own. If you plan to pair the EP101 with an amp that tends to run cleaner, turn it up and let this pedal give it a huge push over the edge. The depth and robustness are top-notch, and it is sure to improve your tone when placed in just about any signal chain.

D'Addario ECB82 Chromes Flatwound Bass Strings (Medium Gauge, Long Scale)
I decided to brush the cobwebs off my fretless bass recently. I cleaned the fingerboard, adjusted the truss rod, and decided it was time for some new Flatwound strings. I put a set of medium-gauge (45-105) D’Addario ECB82 Flatwound strings on my bass. I love how they sound and feel. The tension is just right, and the strings sound fat and full. They had the mellow dead tone that I was looking for in flatwounds, but they maintained clarity, which is even more important on a fretless instrument. The D'Addario ECB82 Flatwound bass strings are now my top recommended flatwound string for bass. Anyone looking to dive into the world of flatwounds will be happy with these strings.

Kala Rumbler U-BASS Acoustic-Electric Ukulele Bass
A lot of different instruments come and go through zZounds headquarters, but I think the Kala Rumbler U-Bass is the most popular instrument in the history of our office. Nobody can keep their hands off it. It's so small and easy to carry, yet at the same time it has a big sound when it's plugged in. I was even able to dial in an upright-bass-like tone -- the Rumbler U-Bass' unique strings kind of feel like upright strings, and I was able to get the thuddy growl that works so well for walking bass lines. This U-Bass is really comfortable, even in my large hands. If you are looking for a super-fun portable bass that has a big upright bass sound, give the Kala Rumbler U-Bass a try.

Eventide H9 Max Harmonizer Multi-Effects Pedal
When you thought that Eventide couldn't add more to an already incredible pedal, in comes the H9 Max. With more effects than you can think of -- including all 45 algorithms and 99 presets from the Space, TimeFactor, PitchFactor and ModFactor -- this multieffects box can help you get just about anything you're looking for. Using the original H9 Harmonizer pedal as a base, the "Max" version provides even more choices. Instead of getting one of Eventide's lesser H9 pedals and buying additional algorithms, you can pick up this maxed-out pedal that's pre-loaded with them all. Already have an H9 Harmonizer pedal? You can link the H9 Max to your existing H9, and copy any of the H9 Max's 45 algorithms to your other pedal. For gigs when you need the portability of a single pedal, but the sound of many pedals, this will be the one to go for.

Oddfellow Caveman Overdrive Pedal
The Oddfellow Caveman Overdrive Pedal is not quite as revolutionary as inventing the wheel, but it's definitely an innovative design when it comes to distortion/boost effects. The Caveman is as straightforward as pedals come, yet it delivers an impressive variety of sounds, with the option of having that boost on top of the overdrive. This pedal can get you from a nice, subtle drive to some crazy tube-like distortion. You can use this as a simple "always on" type of distortion, and when you need that extra push in time for the solo, the boost button will do all the work.
