Carry a 9-foot Yamaha CPIII concert grand with you! With a fully weighted, graded 88-key hammer-action keybed, the P155 sounds and feels like the real deal.

Featuring sounds sampled from a top-of-the-line CPIII concert grand and a full 88-key graded hammer action keyboard, the Yamaha P155 Digital Piano is quite simply a professional-quality grand piano that you can carry under your arm -- perfect for gigging musicians who demand the best piano sounds around (or any one who wants a grand piano but doesn't have the spare room to house it).

The Power and Nuance of a Real Yamaha Grand

Never before has a sample instrument of this sophistication been offered at a price so low. The Yamaha P155 features a stereo sound set sampled from a CPIII acoustic concert grand, and each note is comprised of four layers of velocity. This layered sampling retains the tonal shifts across the dynamic spectrum, yielding fortissimo notes with more power and presence, and pianissimo notes that ping and shimmer. The realism of the sample set is bolstered by key-on and key-off samples (the sound of the felt-tip hammers and dampers contacting the strings), by half-damper sound (the unique tones produced by a partially depressed sustain pedal) and sympathetic string resonance (harmonically sympathetic overtones generated by secondary strings) -- all of which adds up to a virtual piano that's virtually indistinguishable from the real thing, whether in live performance or recording. Plus, there's 16 other instrument voices to play with, including orchestral strings, electric piano sounds, guitars, and more.

A Keyboard that Feels More Like a Piano

read more Realistic sound is only one half the equation. For a musician to really connect with their instrument in performance, it has to have the right feel as well, and the Yamaha P155 digital piano has one of the most authentic-playing keyboards in its or any other price range.

Computer Connectivity and MIDI Recording

Got a bunch of MIDI synth modules or software virtual instruments? Use your Yamaha P155 -- and its beautiful, responsive keyboard -- to control them all, thanks to the piano's full MIDI I/O. Because of the inclusion of a convenient MIDI-over-USB jack, no additional interfaces or adaptors are needed to connect to most computers for recording performances in Garageband, Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, Sibelius, Notion, and most popular music production and notation software.

About Yamaha

Known for making an amazingly wide array of products, Yamaha started in 1887, making reed organs. Today, musical instruments are still Yamaha's main focus. The P155 is a solid midrange entry in Yamaha's line of stage pianos. While not as powerful as the CP series, it costs significantly less. It's a step up from the P-95, which has less sounds, less input/output connectivity, and does not feature CPIII sounds.

Yamaha P155 Graded Hammer Piano

Whether you're practicing at home or away, performing solo or in a band, the Yamaha P-155 digital piano offers professional quality sound with Yamaha's legendary piano touch. Thanks to the top-shelf Yamaha digital piano technologies like advanced sampling methods and the ultra-expressive GH (Graded Hammer) keyboard, musicians don't have to choose between portability and piano quality -- the quality you expect from a company that's been building world-class acoustic pianos for over a century. In the P-155, Yamaha crafts that heritage into a slim cabinet available in three contemporary finishes.

Dynamic Expression, Realistic Sound Hand-crafted Pianos, High-quality Voices

To ensure the finest grand piano sound for the P-155, Yamaha went straight to the source: Yamaha's finest 9-foot concert grand, a hand-picked CFIIIS. Next, a master piano technician painstakingly tuned and regulated the CFIIIS to sonic perfection. Then Yamaha applied Pure CF Sampling technology to accurately capture every aspect of the CFIIIS sound, keeping post-processing to an absolute minimum to maintain sonic integrity throughout. The result is a truly authentic grand piano sound with powerful, dynamic bass, warm mid-range and crystal-clear highs.

Layer upon Layer

Using Yamaha's Dynamic Stereo Sampling (DSS) technology, the incredibly natural 4-level piano sample is a breakthrough achievement for digital pianos. It means that, depending on how hard you strike a note, you will hear one of four piano recordings on each and every key for an unprecedented level of dynamic range and tonal expression. Playing softly doesn't simply lower the volume; it produces the quiet recordings of piano notes. And likewise, playing more forcefully triggers separate samples at different levels.

Ascension to Detail

If you close your eyes while playing a grand piano, you'll find its sound is a bit more complicated than "note-on-note-off." Yamaha has gone to great lengths to capture these sonic artifacts in the P-155. These meticulous efforts include recording a felt damper coming to rest on a vibrating string when a note is released [Key Off Samples], or reproducing the sound of the open strings that wash over your performance when using the damper pedal [Stereo Sustain Samples and Damper Resonance].

A Touch Above

Look inside the lid of a grand piano. Different sized strings require different sized hammers. Different sized hammers have different weights. The keyboard of the P-155 utilizes Yamaha's GH (Graded Hammer) technology to reproduce the true "feel" of a grand piano keyboard action, with heavier touch in the lower keys, lighter touch in the higher keys, and subtle gradations of weight and response throughout. Thanks to the input of concert-level, professional pianists during its development, the GH keyboard features superb balance and remarkable consistency. Performing or practicing on a GH keyboard properly develops and maintains an artist's technique for making the transition between P-155 and an acoustic grand.

Perfection Made Practical

As a full-featured digital piano, the P-155 gives you all you need for practice, playing and performance. It has an internal high-power, two-channel (12W + 12W) amplifier with high-performance speakers built-in-letting you and your audience hear the authentic sounds in their full glory. Is your audience on another continent? Share your musical ideas and masterpieces easily with others by recording your performance to any attached USB storage device*. Songs are stored as Standard MIDI Files (SMF) and can be emailed to and played back on any Mac or PC.

I will not search until this one dies. I am completely satisfied with it.

Sound
I am a snob when it comes to electronic piano sounds, and I have honestly never heard better than the P155. I teach and perform, and this is the first digital piano I have actually recommended to parents looking for electronic options. The touch is fantastic, and it is a joy to play.

Features
For the price range, I am impressed with the features. Do I wish it had a rhythm bank? Yes. Do I wish there were more sounds? Yes. But the sounds it has are high quality... you can actually hear the pipes open on the church organ. The on-board single-track recorder will only hold 3 songs. There is a usb drive input that allows you to record midi and take it to your computer to edit, play, whatever, but there is a specific list of compatible drives. None of the ones I already own work with it, so I can't speak to the use of that feature.

Ease of Use
It is playable right out of the box. I had to read the manual to discover some "hidden" sounds (there are multiple sounds within the strings menu, including percussion). There are some features I have not explored, such as alternative tunings, but the manual does a pretty good job of explaining them. The organ sound uses the sustain pedal as a decrescendo trigger. To play the organ you have to actually finger like an organist...it's a different sort of process. read more

Quality
It's a beautiful instrument, sturdy, well-made. My only issue with it is the weight. It is heavy and cumbersome. I bought the Gator case for it, and I feel secure moving it. It's just a hand full.

Value
It's an excellent value. It would have been nice to know about the usb compatibility issue beforehand, because it means another expense to be able to use that feature. I still say somebody made a mistake pricing this thing, because I LOVE it. It should cost more for the quality of it, in my opinion, and I am HARD to please.

Manufacturer Support
I have had no issues in 2.5 years.

The Wow Factor
It is not a design star, but it is pretty. I have the black/mahogany version., and it fits my needs without being obtrusive. I've had touch screen instruments before that were very distracting. This piano has an attractive, simple design.
