Yamaha MSR400 Powered PA Cabinet (400 Watts, 1x12")

No longer available at zZounds
Perfect for the road or studio, this powered PA cabinet from Yamaha delivers powerful bass and clear midrange all in a clean, simple design.

The Yamaha MSR400 powered speaker can be used alone or in combination with the MSR800W powered subwoofer to assemble sound reinforcement systems from modest to massive. They look great, too. So good, in fact, that they can be used as-is in many permanent installations without requiring any cosmetic cover-up. And, of course, they're more than rugged enough for demanding tour applications as well.

The Powered Speaker Advantage

Whether for use on the road or in permanent installations, powered speakers offer numerous advantages over their separate counterparts. The most obvious is that you don't need separate external amplifiers or the extra connections required -- you can plug your mixer's outputs directly into the speaker inputs. In a modest-size system this alone can eliminate an entire rack of amplifiers. But there are sonic advantages as well. Optimum matching of amplifiers and speakers involves much more than simple impedance figures, and can be a formidable engineering task given the vast number of choices available. In the Yamaha MSR400 and MSR800W the internal amplifiers have been ideally mated to their respective speakers in every way possible, delivering reproduction quality that only such stringent matching can achieve.

Perfect for Mains or Monitoring

The Yamaha MSR400s feature punchy bass and exceptionally clear midrange that delivers vocals with outstanding quality. A second pair of MSR400s can be used for stage monitoring, connected via a graphic equalizer read more for feedback control.

Plenty of Power

The Yamaha MSR400 is a bi-amplified 2-way system, featuring 400 watts maximum burst power that drives the 12 in. cone woofer and 1.75 in. V.C. compression driver. Frequency division is accomplished prior to the power amplifiers via a line-level electronic crossover. This eliminates the problems with loss, distortion, and phase that are virtually unavoidable in conventional passive crossover networks. Another advantage of this type of system is that power can be optimally assigned to the low-frequency and high-frequency units for optimum efficiency as well as smooth, natural balance across the entire audio spectrum.

Compatibility with Almost Any Sound Source

The Yamaha MSR400 accepts nominal input levels ranging from -36 dB to +4 dB, meaning that you can directly connect any source from microphones to professional line-level gear. Three parallel-connected connectors are provided -- two balanced XLR-type connectors and one balanced phone jack -- that can be used as either inputs or parallel outputs. The MSR400 also features an input level control for matching with the source signal. Low and high EQ controls can be used to adjust the respective bands over a plus-or-minus 3dB range.

Speaker Placement Options

Speaker placement is as much a performance issue as it is a convenience and aesthetic issue. Proper placement will give you optimum sound as well as coverage while being as unobtrusive as possible. Of course, the more options you have the better. The Yamaha MSR400 can be stacked or pole-mounted (there's even a pole-mount hole provided on the companion MSR800W powered subwoofer). And it's flyable so you can benefit from the unrivaled coverage and positioning precision that only ceiling suspension can provide.

Given the sound, and the purpose, for which I purchased these they are an excellent choice. Probably will never need anything more unless we start playing arenas!

Sound
I run sound for a male gospel singing group with piano. I wanted a powered speaker for mains capable of small to medium size venues. I listened to JBL, Mackie, Peavey, and several others with similar power ratings, some with higher power ratings. I bought the MSR400. The sound is very clean and true especially for vocals. Excellent balance between lows and highs, and the power is more than adequate for even some larger rooms. I run these using Blue Encore 300 mic's and a Soundcraft FX16ii board. If your focus is on vocals with clean sound, (not needing to blow ears off), you should give these speakers serious consideration.

Features
The reason I give them a 9, (like most powered speakers), is that you get this short electrical cord that will barely reach the floor if you pole mount these which you will do 99% of the time. Speaker manufacturers need to provide at least an 8 foot cord to make connections to extension cords where necessary more practical as well as cosmetically better looking. The units have a low and high EQ but I run this at neutral setting and control EQ from the board which most people will do.

Ease of Use
Plug and play. What more can you say about powered speaker ease of use.

Quality read more
Although made in China,(like virtually everything else in music), they appear to be constructed very well. Molded cabinets eliminate potential vibrations, sturdy, metal grill, easy to transport. Like any speaker I would recommend getting a cover to protect from dust and other elements. Time will tell how it holds up over-all.

Value
Given what is available in the market especially with higher power wattage these are a bit pricy in comparison. Most of the MSR series are a bit over-priced given the competition.

Manufacturer Support
Haven't needed them yet so we'll hope for the best if I do need them.

The Wow Factor
Excellent cosmetic appeal and it doesn't frighten the audience who sit "up front" worrying that they might need ear plugs.
