The yamaha hph mt220 is advertised to be great for the modern studio professional. They do not disappoint. They don't come with a lot of fancy extras but they sound really good. The mids are not recessed but behave according to the track that it is playing. The headphones have excellent PRAT (pace rhythm and rhyming). They have the right amount of weight to the tones with decent clarity. These are more bright sounding than the shure 1540 which has a rolled off treble but not the super bright headphone either with a balanced frequency response. There is a slight boost in the highs but they remain non-fatiguing. The soundstage is pretty good and has a decent width to them but nothing to hoot over. It is more than adequate though considering its price tier and competition. The imaging is good too. It has very good attack and the leading edge of the instruments strike well and cut through the mix pretty good, enabling good instrument separation and a clean snappy sound. They aren't the last word in clarity but are very detailed. That may sound like a contradiction but it is not so. These headphones are really detailed but don't have the hear through quality of most open backs and a bit blanketed in comparison. There are open headphones that don't sound as detailed as these, though. The bass is a little more than neutral but doesn't overpower the songs. This is the perfect amount for the modern professional who wants the bass to be present and accurate. If the song is not bass heavy read more then these won't make them sound bass heavy. As follows, if the song is bass heavy these things pack a mean punch all while behaving and keeping their cool.I can easily see the bass translating to speakers well. They don't have a strong mid bass hump that bloats into the midrange but rather a deep and strong sub bass and even mid bass. Overall the frequency range is a slightly boosted bass and treble with a midrange that doesn't seem left out. That being said you would think that it is not accurate... False. The treble boost is slight and the bass boost seems as if it is there to be able to hear the bass well instead of make it a head pounding experience. I have had tons of headphones over 25 in the last year in this price range and up and I have to say that these definitely are among the most accurate for mixing and producing purposes. If not the most accurate. Yeah some headphones are better at being more transparent or detailes etc but the tuning on these hp's are amazing. No big midbass hump, deep extension in the bass, clear detailed highs with a lot of information, mids that keep their cool but show up in the mix right, and a soundstage that takes it away from being a totally in your head experience. Good job YAMAHA... people are sleeping on these headphones for sure. They rock.
