Yamaha's Graded Hammer Standard Keybed

The GHS keybed is what you'll find on Yamaha's highest-end digital pianos. Unlike some soft-touch keyboards that don't provide piano-like resistance, the DGX-650's 88 Graded Hammer Standard keys are not only weighted, but weighted in a graded increase from right to left. What does Yamaha mean by "graded"? The ivories on a real piano are connected to strings, and these strings get progressively thicker and longer as they get lower in tone. The result of this necessity of physics is that the higher notes on a piano will have a feathery touch, whereas the lower notes will present more resistance -- and so, too, do the keys on the Yamaha DGX-650. This is a must for pro pianists -- and it prepares the novice player for the mechanics of an actual acoustic piano.

Grand Piano Sound and Beyond

Like all Yamaha Portable Grands, the DGX-650 is stocked with Yamaha's detailed stereo-sampled grand piano voice, thanks to the incredible PureCF sampling. You'll be just as impressed by the other sounds on board, from the electric pianos to Yamaha's dynamic "Sweet" and "Cool" saxophone and trumpet sounds, which respond to your touch on the pitch bend wheel. The DGX-650's XGlite soundbank has literally hundreds of instruments for you to play with, including strings, woodwinds, guitars, bass, drum kits, percussion, and even synthesizer sounds and sound effects. 128-note polyphony means you can make an incredible amount of sonic combinations, letting you create the exact sound you are looking for on the keyboard. Want even more variety? Engage Dual Mode to combine two different voices at once, or go into Split Mode and play acoustic bass with your left hand and piano with your right. Yamaha's PureCF sampling means all these instruments are reproduced in high resolution.

Yamaha Education Suite and Performance Assistance

As part of the Yamaha Portable Grand series of digital keyboard instruments, the DGX-650 comes pre-loaded with the Yamaha Education Suite, or Y.E.S., an interactive learning program that will guide the absolute beginner pianist through their first musical steps. With a beautiful, easy-to-read LCD screen, the keyboard displays music notation so there's no need to shuffle through pages when all you want to do is concentrate on the notes. Three different learning modes help the student first read pitch, then read rhythm, then bring the two elements together and play in tempo to accompaniment. No time for lessons? The Yamaha DGX-650 boasts Performance Assistance Technology. With this mode engaged and a song file loaded, the striking of any key will produce the correct pitch.

For the competent sight-reader, the Yamaha DGX-650 can connect, via computer, to the Internet, where a virtually limitless library of sheet music from Yamaha's online store awaits. Your Yamaha DGX-650 can read, display, and play back MIDI files, too -- simply load them from a USB flash memory stick, and you get an onscreen display of the song as notes on a proper music staff. If you're feeling especially creative, the DGX-650's built-in, six-track recorder can help you flex your composition muscles. And with 165 preset auto-accompaniment "styles," you'll have drums, guitar parts, and a whole virtual band backing you up. Just press the buttons for A and B sections, intros, fills and endings to have your keyboard follow the notes you play and display your chords on the LCD screen. The built-in USB Audio Recorder lets you record and transfer CD-quality performances to your computer and share them -- just another way the DGX-650's versatility makes it easier for you to learn and perform.

Built-In Stereo Speakers

Each sound is amplified and projected through the DGX-650's built-in, stereo, two-way speakers. Two-way means that each channel, left and right, is voiced by it's own pair of speakers, one for the low end and one for the highs. By giving each part of the audio spectrum a dedicated speaker element, the bass is bigger, the treble is crisper, and the sound overall is clearer. And when it's time for those late-night practice sessions, just plug in a pair of headphones to enjoy your Yamaha Portable Grand in silence.

Not a cheap-o toy nor an overpriced vanity piece, the Yamaha DGX-650 is a great investment for any musician. It's a fraction of the cost of a grand piano, with an inviting feel and helpful features that surpass typical "student" instruments. Its stellar stereo sound and handsome appearance will ensure that your appreciation for your Yamaha DGX-650 Portable Grand will only grow over time.

PureCF-sampled piano

Sampled from Yamaha's acclaimed CFIIIS concert grand, no other digital piano brand at this price delivers recordings from such a high-end instrument.

Graded Hammer Standard Keyboard

Thanks to Yamaha's experience as the world's leading manufacturer of acoustic pianos, Yamaha has developed a keyboard with action that's virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. Just as on a traditional acoustic piano, the keys of the lower notes have a heavier touch, while the higher ones are more responsive to lighter playing. The keyboard's sensitivity can even be adjusted to match your playing style. This Graded Hammer technology gives the DGX650 remarkably authentic touch in a lightweight instrument.

Amazingly Realistic and Dynamic Sounds

Yamaha's authentic Voices deliver incredibly natural and dynamic sound with all the nuances of the original instrument, from delicate to powerful.

Play Along with Styles

The DGX650 also has complete and fully automatic accompaniment features with the Styles. These Styles provide the equivalent of a full backing band covering wide variety of genres from waltz and swing to 8-beat and euro-trance, plus much more. Select a Style that matches the music you want to play, or experiment with Styles to expand your musical horizons. And if it's difficult to select the right Style from the huge variety available, use the Style Recommender function, which calls up a list of suggested Styles, based on a sample rhythm you play. Also, this instrument features a Smart Chord function, allowing you to simply press single keys, and yet play various chord progressions that authentically match the music genre and key you specify giving you even greater enjoyment from the Styles!

AUX line input

Connect any device with a line output like mobile devices, computers, mixers or even another keyboard and hear it through the internal speakers.

128-note polyphony

Provides enough horsepower for a dropout-free performance while layering two Voices and playing two-handed, sustained chords.

USB Audio (WAV) Recording/Playback

Capture performances as uncompressed audio to a USB drive. Then on a computer you can share your recordings via social media, CDs or mobile devices.

Smart Chord

From simple pop triads to complex jazz 7th chords, Smart Chord lets you play great-sounding chords with only a single finger and intelligently voices the chord based on the type of accompaniment Style selected.

Yamaha Education Suite

Yamaha Education Suite teaches you to play by breaking songs down to individual components, like pitch and rhythm, then reconstructing them once mastered.
