About This Product!
Description
Docs, Multimedia
Yamaha Corporation of America continues to build on its successful line of portable keyboard products with the debut of the 61-key PSR292 and 76-key DGX202. Set to deliver in the third quarter of 2002, the PSR292 and DGX202 retain many of the fun and educational features of their predecessors, with a new emphasis on computer friendliness.

Consumers have always listed the piano as the most important sound in a portable keyboard. The PSR292 and DGX202 have the feel and sound of an acoustic piano with full-sized, touch-sensitive keys, a stereo-sampled piano voice and dynamic filteringĂ–technology usually reserved for high-end professional units. Playing piano is fast and easy with the Yamaha Portable Grand function, as one dedicated piano-shaped button sets up the keyboard to play as a piano in full keyboard mode.

When players say that these keyboards speak to them, they mean it, as many of the functions have vocal cues that announce in English. The built-in Yamaha Education Suite (YES) contains both right-hand and left-hand exercises, a built-in chord directory and interactive functions that grade the playing of internal exercises. YES will count down the beat, just as a teacher would. And, to make the learning experience complete, a music book containing the internal songs is included. Plus, with Yamaha's Music Database, simply select from over 200 song titles, and the entire keyboard will set itself up for that song.

Expandability has become easy and affordable, as both models contain Flash ROM, allowing the user to download new music and store it in the onboard, non-volatile memoryĂ–eliminating the need for a disk drive.

The PSR292 and DGX202 are ideal for use with a home computer. Both models contain MIDI IN/OUT connectors, are General MIDI compatible, and feature a new Computer function button for effortless connection.

"A single button is now your expressway to music on the Web and your computer," states Jim Presley, marketing manager, Portable Keyboards, Pro Audio & Combo Division. "You no longer have to wade through function menus and a maze of selections. It couldn't be easier."

Other professional features include bass ports for enhanced sound, 32 notes of polyphony, Yamaha's exclusive Wave Memory tone generation technology and an easy-to-read, icon-based LCD display. The DGX202 also features a pitch bend wheel. Both models are easy to carry, and can be battery operated.

"I needed to upgrade to 76 keys and this keyboard gave me way more than an extra 15 keys!! WOW!"
I hated to part with my PSR, but my love for playing classical music dictated I move on to 76 keys! Fur Elise just cannot be played properly on a 61 key keyboard. Try it and you'll see what I mean. But I wanted to stick to Yahama, for their rich piano sound, and was surprised to find that they had integrated so many "teaching" features into their keyboards with their "YES" programming. My children play too, and I have a two year old that tries to play. I am thrilled with the educational opportunities this keyboard presents her. True, at 40 lbs, it is a heavy piece of work compared to my PSR, which I could just pick up and move from room to room, but it's worth it for my needs. An excellent keyboard for the advanced home player, and the beginner as well! A lot of bang for your buck! Oh, and let's not forget that rich, grand piano sound Yahama always remembers to deliver.

Style of Music: I play Classical Music for my own, and my family's enjoyment. I also use it for therapy for my mood swings as I am bi-polar.

"Best Keyboard in its Class"
Feature:
Lots of features, but to get an AC adapter and sustain pedal--which should be standard equipment--you have to get the Survival Kit, which is extra.

Quality:
"Champagne silver" and sky-blue metallic styling make it look a lot more professional than most keyboards in this price range. I've had no problems with "sticky keys", static, "fuzzy" sounds or the like. It's still working great after one year of almost daily use.

Value:
This keyboard is head-and-tails over any other in its price range, and even some more expensive.

Desirability:
For this type of keyboard (for the casual home hobbyist), it just looks and sounds great.

Sound:
The "digital grand" piano voice sounds the closest to an actual grand of any keyboard in this price range.

Support:
Never needed to use customer support.

Overall:
This one should satisfy me for a while, though I am currently looking in the Yamaha Clavinova series for a keyboard with weighted keys (which this one lacks). Even after buying a digital piano, I'm sure I will keep this around for noodling around with.
