The Washburn WSD5240 acoustic guitar is based on the original Washburn Solo Deluxe from 1937, which is similar in size to the popular OM shaped guitars commonly found on the market today. This guitar features a solid Sitka spruce top with period-correct vintage sunburst finish. Quarter sawn scalloped Sitka spruce bracing joins the top and rosewood sides while the beautiful 2-piece back is split by a vintage-inspired '30s zipper-style inlaid herringbone stripe. The top is framed-out beautifully by an ivoroid binding and the sound hole is expertly bound and finished by a gorgeous ringed herringbone rosette. The tortoise pickguard rounds out the vintage vibe while the fully-carved solid ebony bridge supports a compensated bone saddle for improved intonation, delicately nuanced tone and singing sustain.

The comfortable mahogany neck joins the body at the 14th fret and is adorned with a '30s style rosewood capped headstock with intricately inlaid pearl appointments and period-correct Washburn logo. High quality Grover Butterbean tuners ensure smooth, high-ratio tuning accuracy and unmatched stability. The seamlessly bound ebony fingerboard is perfectly matched to the ebony bridge and a bone nut finishes the expertly crafted instrument ensuring every nuance was attended to.

The guitar looks good at first and sounds pretty good. The sunburst finish seems to be well applied. The neck contour is very comfortable and the action out of the box is very good. I love the design of this guitar, it's a nice compromise between a parlor guitar and a dreadnought. There were several things I didn't like. I was looking forward to playing an acoustic with jumbo frets. They didn't seem jumbo to me, more like mediums, but they were a nice size. It was easier to play than my Martin which has thin frets. But these frets were not dressed or polished. It looks like they were precut and ends shaped before they were installed and that was it. The fretwork on my $250 Yamaha is much more comfortable. There were no buzzes anywhere on the neck except on the low E in the first position. Another thing that bugged me was the glue joints and finish where the neck meets the body was very sloppy. On my $250 Yamaha and $450 Seagull they are flawless. I expected more from a $600 guitar. I ordered this because I'm a huge Warren Haynes fan and didn't have the money set aside for the Custom Shop version. I thought this guitar would be a bit better constructed than cheaper Chinese acoustics, but it seemed to be a bit off the mark. Maybe I got an outlier. I returned the guitar to zZounds, and they were very helpful.
