Leave your messy pedalboard at home and pick up a Bass Fly Rig. With a SansAmp, compressor, octave fuzz, chorus, and tuner, this pedal is ready for anything.

Tech 21 was hammered with requests for a bass version of the Fly Rig 5 since the day it was introduced. How could we not answer they call? Tech 21 went a little crazy and stuffed everything they could into the Bass Fly Rig, except the kitchen sink, Rhode Island and a submarine.

SansAmp

SansAmp, of course, as its center point, with our unique Character control that sweeps through the most storied vintage and modern tones. Three-band active EQ provides professional grade tweakability for any situation. For dirt and grind, Drive adds gain and overdrive. You can also add distortion by engaging the Pre-Boost. And then there's Fuzz in the OCTAFILTER section. Each method achieves a different variety of tonal madness. You can even use all three at the same time, but be sure to hold onto your shorts.

Octafilter

OCTAFILTER brings an entire re-invented palette of expression with a crazy amount of possibilities, from Minimoog-style synth to funky town. The controls interact so that you can get dynamically-filtered clean, fuzz, and octave, as well as octave and fuzz together. When Q is at minimum, Range becomes a high-cut tone filter for different versions of clean, fuzz, octave, and octave and fuzz together. You can then blend any of these combinations with your direct signal via the Mix control. But wait, there's more! By bringing in some COMP, you can get infinite sustain like a keyboard bass. Whew.

Comp

COMP, for compression, utilizes old school, all-analog, read more FET-based technology, which is inherently warmer, more transparent and musical.

Boost

Switchable Pre/Post Boost. Pre-Boost mode interacts with the SansAmp section to beef up drive and distortion. Post-Boost mode increases the overall volume to punch up fills and solos.

Chorus

Chorus, derived from their Bass Boost Chorus pedal, adds choral voicings of two instruments. With a slight delay between, it adds thickness and space.

Tuner

Chromatic Tuner is within the CHR section. You simply hold down the CHR footswitch to engage the Tuner, which simultaneously mutes the signal path.

The Tech21 Bass Fly rig fills a very unique void in the marketplace in that if falls right in with the micro-amp mindset: it’s not going to replace a floorboard full of top shelf gear (with one exception that is) BUT it’s sure good enough to take place in a bassist hard case to take care of 90% of common gig needs/ To start with – the heart of the matter is the SansAmp which when matched with the boost button will give you about any amp tone you could every want from squeaky clean to ridiculous amounts of modern gain. No need for any clarification here with the exception of noting that the circuitry on this piece of gear is more akin to the current SansAmp models (and VTBass Head) than the old reliable vintage boxes. The Compressor is serviceable – and rather musical at that. There is an input attenuator for active basses in this section – but for most players using even a moderate about of compressor “squash” this will hardly be necessary. Typical controls and caveats reply here – and reacts very close to your favorite Rolls clone. There is an extra footswitch here for a BOOST that can be assigned pre or post SansAmp that makes for a perfect overdrive push when dialed in properly. Here is where I get a bit lost on this unit. Although an Octave/Fuzz is included on this board, and works remarkably well for the money it’s almost like they were looking for too much bang for the buck out of one piece of equipment. The tracking is a bit slow and Q a bit too read more “angular” to really get professional tones from while the fuzz is almost too aggressive and nasal. Unless you are a massive Rush or Muse fan you will most likely never touch the damn thing. Tech21 would have been better served with the addition of a nice second overdrive here. The Chorus on the other hand is actually remarkable. Bassists don’t need 85 different knobs and modes to deal with thank you – twist the level to where you like it and done. No muss no fuss – and thickens brilliantly. Tuner tracks well and is fantastic that it mutes the unit for those of us dedicated to having a volume pedal or other floor mounted solution for silencing between tracks on stage that intend on using this piece of equipment as a supplement rather than a replacement Is very well made, works with headphones and silent use and switching with both my amps & DI. Was worth every penny….
