"Sounds shoddy without expensive pre-amp"

This is a great sounding device, minus a few "problems" that need to be addressed. 1) CLEAN BUT CRAPPY PRE-AMP: After testing 2 mics (shure SM-57 & shure beta 87A) hooked directly to the mic input (and setting to "dynamic" or "condenser" on the panel), I noticed that the input levels were almost inaudible until I turned up the input knob to almost maximum, then I was immediately within clipping range (red lights). I tried turning up "MIC BOOST" from OFF to LOW, while turning down the input level, but it didn't help much. When I MIC BOOST to HIGH, it clipped right away. The only way around this was to plug the mic into an expensive tube pre-amp, then from pre-amp to VoiceLive Touch2. Also when NOT using an outboard mic pre-amp... I found the unit touchy not only with loud signals, but at low volume singing the internal noise-gate would kick-in and cut off the tail of my harmonies (even when I turned the gate OFF in "Tone-style" it would not disable this low-level noise gate in the unit itself). You HAVE TO USE A PREAMP for hi-quality usage. 2) ANALOG OUTPUTS WEAK: Very weak output signal, I had to program ANALOG OUT LEVEL from default 0dB to +10dB (maximum) and signal was still low, but acceptable. Very strange since the USB-OUT has a very nice, high signal at 0dB. 3) USB-IN problem when using VOICELIVE as INSERT FX in DAW. Whether in Logic or Ableton, I was fine when singing into the unit with my (mic-to-pre-amp-to-voicelive) setup and then routing the VOICELIVE's read more USB-OUT into my DAW (By setting DAW input preferences to VOICELIVE). This gave me an awesome fat clean signal to record with. But when I wanted to use VOICELIVE as an insert effect in my DAW, sending a pre-recorded vocal thru USB to VOICELIVE...I ran into a big problem...in order to do this, I would have to disable my regular sound-card and monitoring setup, so I could not hear what I was doing. After contacting support, they sent me a video of how to setup an aggregate device that allows both sound cards at same time...only problem is that it crashes DAW alot, so better to route it manually through sound-card's analog out to VOICELIVE Mic-Input with proper cable (in my case 1/4" maleTRS to XLR male). So my main gripe are the VERY WEAK MIC PREAMP and OUTPUT AMPLIFIERS , and to correct these issues would probably make the unit more expensive? Do I really have to take my studio pre-amp to live shows? I guess so! Otherwise, the Harmonies, Hard-Tuning, FX are AWESOME, blow away Antares Auto-tune VST. I wish they added more chopper presets, as there is only 1. I was very excited when I used MIDI IN (actual MIDI cable or USB) from a keyboard or pre-recorded DAW MIDI TRACK to create LIVE HARMONIES... 2 Basic algorithms for MIDI-controlled harmonies (both very cool): MIDI HARD-NOTE TRACKING (up to 4 note chords)- here harmonies stay hard-tuned to exact pitch of MIDI notes played including exact octave..if you play a higher/lower octave on keyboard, harmonies move up/down too, but harmonies stay HARD-TUNED to MIDI notes and will not follow voice (nudge to next octave) as singer changes octaves. MIDI FLUID-NOTE TRACKING (up to 4-note chords)- Harmonies follow singer's octave shifts by nudging to the nearest note of the MIDI chord played, regardless of MIDI octave. This is an awesome unit, very clean processing...glad to have purchased it!
