The US-366 has 2 XLR mic pres, a Hi-Z input, and MIDI I/O -- plus onboard DSP for running compressors, EQ, and reverbs without bogging down your computer.

In the process of creating music, many engineers have started utilizing high-resolution formats while recording to ensure the best quality sounds. The TASCAM US-366 is suited perfectly for these types of recordings.

The US-366 is designed with two XLR with +48V phantom power and two TRS inputs. Having both options for condenser mics and line level inputs ensures you are getting the best possible sound and lowest-noise when recording. In addition, INPUT-1 can connect any high-impedance equipment (like a guitar) directly.

On-board Effects

The US-366 comes with on-board effects such as compressor, 3-band EQ, and Reverb -- all located on the DSP. While recording, you can use the input effects for any input signal and the reverb effect on any monitoring signal at the same time. The US-366 is built with a "Mixer Panel" button located conveniently on top. This button provides a one-click recall function for the DSP mixer. When pushed a second time the mixer panel will be conveniently hidden.

Two Handy Operational Modes

The multi-track mode is ideal for music creation. This mode delivers independent monitor-mixing from a send-level like an inline-console to a PC. In addition, this mode delivers monaural-monitoring.

The stereo-mix mode makes podcast recording or broadcasting convenient and easy. An output audio signal from any PC can relay that signal back to the PC again via your DSP mixer. Any BGM from a PC can mix your voice by microphone then the mixed sound will read more transfer back to the PC again.

RC-3F Footswitch Ready

The US-366 can connect the optional RC-3F foot-switch to provide hands-free control for your DAW. Utilize this feature while playing your instrument or recording at a distance from your computer. This feature operating on "Mackie Control" or "HUI" emulation and can be select from two modes.

"Great Interface, Bad Mac Drivers"

Overall: 2 out of 5 stars

The interface is great, especially for the price. Sounded great with both my Rhode NT-1A and AKG C 535 EB. Build quality was fine, especially at the price. Be aware that "effects" (such as reverb) can be monitored but recorded dry, but "dynamics" (such as compression or de-essing) MUST be recorded wet if they are used, and can only be used on one input at a time. However, the Mac driver for the device is a user-space USB setup that, believe it or not, does not work with the Mac application sandbox. Thus if the US-366 is set up as a "default" audio device, many applications will work just fine (such as VLC, or Studio One 2). Others, however, will show wonky behaviour. For example, QuickTime Player will respond with a "-101 Unknown" error. Depending on the version of Safari you have and whether you are using YouTube's flash or html5 player, a video's audio may or may not sound. Again, be aware that ALL app-store apps are sandboxed, this includes the latest GarageBand and Logic, so neither of these work as default devices. The bug has been reported to Tascam/TEAC and they are investigating. However, you can look in your Mac's console log to verify this yourself. Just search for "sandboxd" entries and "denied", especially with regard to "iokit" (the hardware driver part of OS X). This is on Mac OS 10.8.5 with the latest 1.02 driver and 1.02 firmware. No 10.9 drivers currently exist. Too bad... I've decided to return mine. :-(
