Overall: I have been searching for a better mic than the built in one for the iPhone 4 or 4S all year long. There are a few pretenders that do nothing. Then there is the iRig, a standard mic that you hold in your hand and plugs into the headphone port. It comes with a dedicated App. This mic is worthless. I finally discoverd the iM2 and am raving about it. It produces WAVW files which are quite large and that's good because it means there's a lot of digital information in each recording. Downloading them to your computer while syncing your iPhone is a snap and you can then put them in iTunes where you can covert them into an MP3 or AAC to reduce their size by 90% without much loss of quality. I don't know how to compare the quality of the recording but suffice it to say that it's very good. I'd guess it about 70% of the quality of a professional engineered MP3. It also comes with it's own dedicated App which makes recording, equalizing, limiting, etc. a breeze, plus there's telephone support for the price of the call. This is the only good mic available for the iPhone. Don't waste your time or money anywhere else. If you need a good stereo mic to record rehearsals or even performances this is it. The only problem I have found is that since the mic plugs into your sync port, you can't power or charge the phone while using the Mic. It doesn't use much power but I could see a situation where power runs out if you're recording a long concert. So far it seems like it uses 40% of a 100% charge during 90 minutes of recording.

Sound: Recording quality is fantastic. According to Tascam, these are the same microphones in their DR series of recorders. The on-board limiter works well for my applications. Feature: Being able to rotate the microphone is very helpful, as is having an on-board sensitivity dial. Ease of Use: Plug it into an iPhone/iPad, set levels, hit record in your app of choice... done. It bypasses the onboard mic automatically. Quality: As far as build quality goes: very small, very light... it doesn't really lock into the docking port, so you'll want to make sure you don't bump it in the middle of recording. Value: If you have an iPad or iPhone, this is an incredible value. You already have a really great interface to record with in the apps you can get on iOS (you can download the Tascam PCM app for free, but there are many others available...) The only thing missing was a good microphone. This fills that gap wonderfully... and cheaply. Manufacturer Support: N/A The Wow Factor: The really amazing thing about this becomes clear when you realize that this mic works with the many awesome sound design/production apps on iOS. If you don't already have a portable digital recorder, or you want to make the most of your iPad/iPhone for music/sound design purposes, you need this. Overall: Being in the market for a portable field recorder, I had considered some more expensive options when I discovered the iM2. It's a great solution if you have an i-device, as the microphones on it are of pretty great quality. It is incredibly useful when paired with the hundreds of great sound/production apps on iOS.
