OK, so you don't have wads of cash to blow on gear. That doesn't mean you have to compromise your standards of quality. Stand-alone CD recorders are just about de rigueur for any level studio nowadays. So that means you need one, and not some half-featured consumer rig you can buy at the megastore.

No sir, you need a Tascam box with 24-bit A/D and D/A converters, with Unbalanced, S/PDIF, and lightpipe I/O. Digital gain adjustment and digital processing of fade-in and fade-outs, and sample rate conversion. No sissy-boy consumer deck has this kind of stuff. And we dare you to go and try to find one at the discount warehouse that's already setup to be rack-mountable. We hope that nobody goes and blabs back to Tascam that this thing is supposed to be an entry-level piece.

Seriously, there are those engineers and musicians that are always going to want a piece of hardware to do the job. And even if you have a computer-based studio, this is an elegant and handy rig to have on hand. It's for any studio of any size, or for anybody who wants a quality CD burner.

Now, we should talk about what this deck is NOT. It's not a CD-ROM drive for a computer, sampler, or any other application. You won't be able to burn computer data, or anything else than audio on this machine. But it will play CDs like a regular deck, and will not erase your store-bought CDs. You can use most any blank CD media, but be warned that occasionally, you'll get a brand of CD blank that won't work. Stick to good-quality blanks for the best use.

"Ideal for studio mixdown OR live recording!!!"
When mixing down from my DA-88 Digital 8 through Mackie 1604, I used a real time audio source to monitor the mixdown ''post 700''. I popped a CD into the home theater and eq'd it for the best sound, then used that eq setting for monitoring my mixdown onto the 700. the initial degridation going thru the analog board was EASILY compensated by slightly bumping the lows and tweaking the sibilance on the Mackie. Spc-60hz and 8-12khz. The final product is indistinguishable from pro line recordings.
