Tama HP310LW Speed Cobra Double Bass Drum Pedal

Tama's HP310LW Speed Cobra double kick pedal lives up to its name, delivering power and speed with its long footboard, recessed setting, and LiteSprocket.

Delivering speed and power, the Tama HP310LW double bass pedal meets the demands of todays drummers. With most pedals, if you adjust the action to address speed, you can sometimes lose power. Conversely, if you focus primarily on the power of the pedal's stroke, you sometimes lose the desired speed. Now, the rules have changed. Tama's Speed Cobra not only delivers pure raw aggression and power, but lightening fast speed!

Long Footboard

A specially designed pedal board for the Speed Cobra series. By designing the footboard longer than Iron Cobra, it rapidly accelerates the power and speed of the beater stroke, with less physical effort than ever before. Additionally, the smoother playing surface reduces friction between your foot and the footboard, allowing more precise control and flexibility.

Recessed Setting

To continuously play fast passages, your pedal action has to feel light for less stress and muscle fatigue. The Recessed Setting position makes it possible to achieve a perfect balance between the natural playing feel of the Chain Drive's motion and lighter action. As a result, about 20% less exertion is required to produce the same result in power and feel found in existing current models.

LiteSprocket

We adopted the true round shaped LiteSprocket for natural feel and smooth action. Compared with Iron Cobra's sprocket, this version decreases its weight by 40%. It revolves naturally and smoothly, providing a lighter feel.

My initial impressions, since I just got it delivered last night (with the disclaimer that this is the first double-kick pedal I've owned and have nothing to compare to):I'll start with the "bad": I'm a little concerned about the connecting rod that ties the left pedal to its beater, it's aluminum and may go someday after I beat it up a lot. That's it. The only thing I'm even a little worried about. Now, everything else: Tama isn't kidding when they call this sucker "Speed Cobra". It is FAAAST! I haven't played double-kick in about 20 years, and in less than an hour after opening the box I'm rolling into my cymbal hits. It has what I'd consider just the right level of adjustability; I know that higher-priced pedals have a lot more things you can tweak, but I can't imagine wanting more than the options here (see "Features" for those details). FTM: 10/10.

Sound
Fast and accurate. Two different options on the beater heads (just turn them around to switch between them).

Features
Highly adjustable, including beater/footboard combined angle, beater angle separate from footboard, beater height, dual-head beaters, distance between pedals, angle of each pedal, and spring tension. Springs have a locking mechanism that keeps them from twisting. Two adjustable carpet spurs on each baseplate. Dual-chain drive. Cobra Coils not included, but baseplates include the slots to mount them so you can add them if you want. Heavy-duty drum read more key included to make all adjustments.

Ease of Use
Super-easy to assemble and adjust, includes detailed instructions in English and Japanese with diagrams to explain each process. I had everything assembled and working in about 20 minutes, with most adjustments made in another 20.

Quality
Appears very sturdy, considering that some parts are made of aluminum to reduce weight. Would prefer to see a steel rather than aluminum connecting rod between pedals, but that's a minor complaint.

Value
YES! Features, durability, and functionality well above its price-point. There's cheaper pedals, but I'd be very reluctant to go near them after trying this one. I've read countless reviews of pedals in this price-point, and this one is always regarded as a winner - now I can see why.

Manufacturer Support
Haven't had to call them, but I've heard nothing but good things about Tama support.

The Wow Factor
Fast and accurate, to the point that I can hear and feel deficiencies in my playing much more easily (this is a really, really good thing). Affordably priced, with the options to add and/or swap out critical parts to upgrade it to the level of higher-priced models if you want to - but I can't imagine wanting to. This things is RAD.
