Top-Shelf Earbuds for the Most Discerning Audiophile!
Shure refers to their SE846 Sound Isolating Earphones as their "flagship earphone." These top-of-the-line Shure earbuds reflect extraordinary research and development, and the listening experience they deliver truly is in a world all its own.
See how to fit your SE earphones to your ears in these videos from Shure:
Revolutionary 3-Way Design
The SE846 earbuds work by using four balanced armature drivers in a three-way configuration. Quad-driver earphones have been utilized by Shure before, but the SE846 is the first model to use a three-way configuration. That means that the lows, middle, and high frequencies are independently driven and situated in their own place within the sound field the ear receives.
Special Love for the Low End
A big part of the SE846s' unique appeal comes from their True Subwoofer style design, utilizing a totally proprietary high-pass filter to precisely shape the low-end frequencies with unprecedented resolution. The discrete design of the low-end driver in these earphones means that the low frequencies can be independently powered, just like the subwoofer in a full-range system. The high-pass filter, meanwhile, cross-calibrates for a perfect bass response, without interfering with the other drivers rendering their own frequency ranges.
Removable, Replaceable Nozzles
The SE846 earphones also feature removable nozzles. This allow the nozzle piece to be cleaned or replaced if it becomes dirty or worn out. However, this also opens the possibility of a more variable acoustic experience as well. To this end, Shure gives you three different nozzle inserts (Balanced, Warm, and Bright) that you can use or change out according to your preference. The Bright insert shapes the peaks in the presence range about 2.5 dB higher than the balanced insert. The Warm insert works the peaks down about 2.5 dB from the Balanced response. The Balanced nozzle is said to sound best with contemporary pop music or other more complex studio-recorded music. The bright insert is great for more raw recordings of acoustic instruments, for classical music, and for other listening situations in which live mic'd instruments communicate a high level of detail. A special tool is included for you to change out the nozzle and experiment.
You might consider the price tag on these earphones a rather large investment to make for a pair of seemingly delicate earbud headphones. But the truth is, Shure SE846s are built to last forever.
They are thoughtfully designed with detachable cables, to protect the most delicate componentry. The Shure SE846 Sound Isolating Earphones were actually developed out of professional-grade in-ear monitors that Shure pioneered over more than 20 years. Given that they were designed to survive the rigors of the stage, the SE846 are more than qualified to serve as sturdy audiophile-grade earbuds.
