Legendary Shure Quality

When gear-savvy musicians talk microphones, Shure is bound to be mentioned among the best and brightest. No mic locker is complete without a healthy dose of legendary Shure quality and performance. Their Performance Gear Alta series is the perfect introduction to one of the best microphone manufacturers on the planet.

Engineered For Vocal Performance

All of Shure's Performance Gear Alta microphones are engineered for specific applications, both on stage and in the studio. While other mics in the series are designed for instrument use, the PGA58 is frequency-tailored to bring clarity and presence to vocals. The PGA58 handles a frequency response of 50-16,000 Hz -- wide enough to handle any voice. Low-frequency roll-off with carefully boosted midrange helps voices read more cut through, effectively communicating your message and keeping the audience engaged with your songs or spoken-word performance.

Cardioid Pickup Pattern

In a live-performance setting, a lead singer tends to move around the stage quite a bit. With all the sound leaking in from stage monitors and main speakers, feedback from the vocal mic can be difficult to deal with. Fortunately, the PGA58 uses a cardioid pickup pattern to prevent off-axis sounds from entering the mic capsule. Your singer is free to roam wherever they like without worrying about creating a feedback loop. In the studio, this narrow pickup range is great for isolating audio to individual tracks. If the drums are bleeding into the vocals, it can be difficult to boost the singer's level without having too much of the drums in the mix. The cardioid pattern keeps the drums out, making it easy to adjust the vocals while the instrument levels remain unchanged. You'll definitely appreciate this added control as your mixes get tighter and clearer. The integrated on/off switch also prevents feedback and track-bleed when the mic is not in use -- and saves you headaches when you're gigging without a sound guy.

Rugged Construction

This mic is built to take abuse and still perform to perfection. The rugged metal housing and steel mesh grille protect the internal components from damage, no matter how crazy things get up on stage. The PGA58's all-black finish also looks great and blends in perfectly on a dark stage. The mic capsule contains a neodymium magnet for boosted signal levels, plus a beefy coil to handle sound pressure level (SPL) up to 94 dB without distortion. You can check the PGA58 off your list of things to worry about and spend your time tightening up your set.

It was hard to tell much difference between the PGA-58 and the Beta-58 despite the $100.00 difference in price. Granted my Beta is 15 years old so maybe improvements have been made to the PGA-58 or the Beta is wearing out. However I can outfit my whole band 6 microphones and save a bit of money in the mean time. While still sticking with the quality microphones Shure offers.
