Seymour Duncan SSL3 Hot Strat Single-Coil Pickup

Get stronger output and more sustain with this single coil pickup. It features Alnico V magnets and extra coil windings adding tons of power.

The SSL-3 is hotter than the vintage models with more sustain, fullness and output. The raised flat pole pieces are taller Alnico V magnets for a stronger and deeper magnetic field. Extra coil windings give you extra power. White pickup cover included.

"Hot for Strat SSL-3 works well with the Fender Mustang"

9 only because there's always something somewhere better.

Sound
I put this on my '68 Fender Mustang in the bridge position, back in the mid-1990s. It was part of a rebuild that was put away until last Summer due to not understanding how to wire. Lots of diagrams on the Internet. After replacing everything but the body, neck, bridge and vibrato, it's a killer player! Paired with the Seymour Duncan SCR-1 Cool Rails in the neck position it has a nice tone balance. With the Mustang's standard coil reverse switches, it has two sounds too. Very strong high output rock type sound. This ain't no jazz pickup. The SCR-1 is a humbucker. The other standard pickup switch is wired to use either or both coils. The combination makes for a nice variety with the brass nut and immobilized metal bridge. A regular Les Paul switch, in addition, selects either or both pickups.

Features
Very strong output. Might not be to everyone's taste. Check out the Seymour Duncan website for the sound clips of all their pickups. Read everything they and others say before deciding. This pickup doesn't need to be real close to the strings to sound good. Probably not a bad idea considering magnetic 'string-pull' issues, although I can't say. Since in my situation I can't raise the pickups that far. It doesn't matter. I'm satisfied.

Ease of Use
SSL-3 works well with the Fender Mustang although the pickguard opening needs read more a bit of filing to fit a Strat pickup. I have 250k pots with a .047 disk cap. A different cap would sound different since they bleed treble off differently, giving different tone. Overall, this pickup is great for punching up a weak sounding guitar.
