Seymour Duncan SH-55 Seth Lover Humbucker Pickup

Looking for vintage PAF boldness? Crafted with alnico magnets, the Seymour Duncan SH-55 lets players get the warm humbucker tone that Seth Lover made famous.

The humbucker went through a revolutionary change in the mid '50s with Seth Lover's "Patent Applied For" -- PAF -- humbucking pickup, and the Seymour Duncan SH-55 Seth Lover humbucker is a nearly identical reissue of this serious game-changer. This renowned pickup delivers iconic tone and pristine color with its alnico bar magnet, butyrate plastic bobbins, serious hum-canceling integrity, nickel silver bottom plate, plain enamel wire, black paper tape, and wooden spacer. This baby also uses a nickel silver cover, not brass, to maintain that naturally warmer, top-class tone. See why this pickup changed the world of humbuckers by slipping it into your axe and firing it up.

That Unyielding PAF Tone

Since it took more than four years for Seth Lover's design to get a patent number in the late '50s, many guitarists during this pending period began referring to this humbucker by its "Patent Applied For" status -- PAF. A warm, well-rounded and well articulated signal with balanced highs, mids, and low-end tones will envelope any listener within earshot. Your playing will consistently come through this baby with an alluring character full of color and sonic depth.

The Sonic Character of Alnico Bar Magnets

Ceramic magnets in guitar pickups tend to have sharper peaks and add a brittle harshness to your signal, which is great if you want a sharp and punchy tone. Alnico magnets, on the other hand, tend to produce a smoother, warmer, and all-around more balanced tone to your playing. read more The more rounded peak tone of alnico magnets have made them analogous to "worn shock absorbers" by one particular pickup exert, and the "mileage" seen through the historical trajectory of Lover's PAF design attests to its strong character and nearly universal appeal.

Models for Both Bridge and Neck Positions

Seymour Duncan has models for both neck and bridge positions for your SH-55. Your neck position humbucker is nice and thick, and really fills in the air with a full density and breadth. The bridge pickup model brings in a bit more brightness that cuts through nicely without any harsh peaks or abrasiveness. Both pickup models harness a reliable hum-canceling integrity, so you're always getting a clear and pristine signal with every strum.

Seymour Duncan SH55 Seth Lover Humbucker

The SH-55 was designed jointly by Seymour and humbucker inventor Seth Lover. Just like the original 1955 P.A.F.s, the SH-55 utilizes a nickel silver bottom plate, butyrate plastic bobbins; plain enamel wire, an Alnico bar magnet, a wooden spacer, and black paper tape. The SH-55 uses a nickel silver cover instead of brass, which magnetically eliminates too much of the pickup's natural high-end tone.

To be completely true to the original design and tone, the pickup is not wax potted. The tone is vintage P.A.F. The neck pickup will warm up even the coldest guitar. And the unpotted covers give the bridge pickup just enough boldness to break up early and really cut. Single conductor cable standard.

"Albert King ALERT!"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
I would buy this product again, even if it failed. It is amazing for blues tones.
Sound
AlbertKingVille! The description on Seymour Duncan's site fits this pickup well. I find it: smooth, warm and thick. The quality is perfect for clean blues and jazz like tones. Distortion is alright, if you enjoy "old-school" distortion. If one is looking for quality, this is the pickup to buy! I played several other Gibsons with other pickups -- these were the ones for me.
Features
They are just like the PAF ones; the materials in them are top of the line.
Ease of Use
Outstanding harmonics; ease of use not a problem at all; best pickup I ever played, no question.
Quality
No problems with quality -- top of the line!
Value
Great deal at around a hundred bucks, worth every penny!
Manufacturer Support
They have responded via e~mail within the same day; wonderful service.
The Wow Factor
Gold covers look outstanding on my Gibson Custom cherry burst!
