Roland JUPITER-80 Synthesizer Keyboard (76-Key)

No longer available at zZounds
A live-performance powerhouse, the Jupiter-80 brings innovative SuperNATURAL tone-generation technology to a colorful, user-friendly interface.

While its name conjures up images of the early-'80s classic Jupiter 8 analog synth, there's nothing old-school about the Roland Jupiter-80. This is no remake -- it's a futuristic instrument built around a huge, 256-voice polyphonic sound engine that combines a punchy, versatile virtual-analog synth with expressive, convincing acoustic instruments, thanks to Roland's Behavior Modeling and SuperNATURAL sampling technology. Designed for the gigging keyboardist, the Jupiter-80's colorful Jupiter 8-style switches can quickly apply tones, layers, and four-way splits. Change your whole setup with one thumb using the glowing, numbered Registration buttons below the keyboard. If you're looking for a fat synth for live performance, with an orchestra's worth of realistic acoustic instruments in a 40-pound box, this 76-key semi-weighted monster is a worthy contender.

Dig Deep into Sounds

Let's look in detail at the unconventional sound structure around which the Roland Jupiter-80 is built. There are two distinct tone generators: SuperNATURAL Acoustic, and SuperNATURAL Synth. You can combine up to four tones (pianos, clavinets, polysynths, you name it) in a "Live Set." Layer or split one or two Live Sets, and add any Solo Tone and any Perc Tone you like (with independent volume, accessible via the dedicated front-panel sliders), and you've got a Registration. The Jupiter-80 can save 256 of these richly-detailed Registration setups, including a snapshot of all your settings. This all read more adds up to serious potential for building original, complex sounds. Where other synths may boast "1000+ tones" or some such number, Roland doesn't even try to quantify all the combinations possible on this beast. Suffice it to say that with the Roland Jupiter-80, you can banish fakey, pre-fabricated keyboard sounds for good.

SuperNATURAL Acoustic

Roland has really outdone themselves when it comes to recreating traditional acoustic instruments. Choose a guitar patch and play two notes a step or half step apart nearly simultaneously, and you'll hear a realistic bend from one to the next. Play a wider interval, and you'll hear a strum or picked chord. Choose a sax sample and hear the tone change and "growl" as you press harder on the keys, as you'd get when blowing harder into a real saxophone. Or lean into the keys on a violin sound, and hear a natural vibrato take shape. These subtle nuances are all part of Roland's Behavior Modeling technology on all 117 SuperNATURAL Acoustic tones. Strings, brass, woodwinds, pianos, and more all come to life with this boundary-pushing technology.

SuperNATURAL Synth

This board wouldn't be worthy of the "Jupiter" name without a powerful analog-modeling synthesis engine. Fortunately, the Jupiter-80's SuperNATURAL Synth tone generator lets you dig in deep to build tones from the ground up. You can stack three Partials in a Tone and up to ten Tones in a Registration to create a humongous 27-oscillator synth. Each oscillator can utilize vintage analog waveforms designed to recreate those found on the original Jupiter-8, or access one of 350 PCM samples of classic synths, pianos, strings, and more. And you can control all this power from the Jupiter-80's touch-sensitive, full-color LCD screen -- one feature you'd be hard-pressed to find on any vintage synth.

Past, Present, and Future Sound

The Roland Jupiter-80 nods to its past with lethal, multi-layered SuperNATURAL synthesizer tones so fat you'll need a knife to cut through it, but that's only the beginning of what this powerhouse synth will do. Gigging musicians will love the stockpile of essential sounds onboard, including Roland's famous SuperNATURAL Piano, strings, brass, and much more. The Roland Jupiter-80 puts a fast-access user interface under your fingers--a dream for live performance. Its heavyweight design, complete with metal side panels, recalls the legendary Jupiter but with a modern twist.

Powerful Live Sets Featuring Four-Tone Structure and Registrations

Roland Jupiter-80's sound engine handles four x tones with dedicated DSP per tone as a basic unit "Live Set" for manual performance. Layering of Upper and Lower Live Sets, plus a specialized "Solo" part, means the incredibly massive nine-tone-stack sound. Customized complex settings can be saved as Registrations, and easily recalled during live performance.

Tone Blender

You will love the deep possibilities of the stackable SuperNATURAL architecture and unique features such as Tone Blender, which tweaks values of multiple parameters simultaneously and lets you "Capture" any combination and save it as a Live Set. Create complex, emotional textures that respond, react, and evolve like nothing you've heard before. Tone Blender can also dramatically enhance your live-performance capabilities by letting you assign its multiple parameters to controllers such as the D Beam.

"It Depends On What You Want It For"

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars
(see rating details)
Whether you like this keyboard depends heavily on what kind of music you like play and what you want to do with it. It's not a workstation. If you want to record music, don't expect the Jupiter to do everything for you. It's not an analogue synth, so if you want on-board access to 500 knobs and sliders, you'll be disappointed. It is, however, an excellent digital synthesizer. You may not have 500 knobs on the keyboard, but you've got the equivalent of them on the touch screen. And if you want to make realistic instrument sounds, the articulation of the instruments is superb.

Sound
The sound model on the Jupiter 80 allows you to stack many, many sounds on top of each other. You can make some very full, rich textures, both through the use of the oscillators and by stacking the acoustic instrument sounds. As I said above, the articulation is amazing--sometimes I wonder whether I'd be able to tell the difference if I didn't know better. On the down side, I've never seen anyone rave about Jupiter 80 pianos, and there's a reason for that. Most of them just aren't worth raving about. Fortunately, I already own a Yamaha CP-5, and its pianos are very good, so I was already set on those. So, if you mainly just want a piano, go elsewhere.

Features
I've never used a full-up synthesizer before, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. However, the synth model has an amazing level of depth. It's taken me many hours to even skim the read more surface on it. I bought it because I wanted something that sounded completely different from my CP-5, as well as something that could articulate instruments properly. It delivered.I do wonder if I might have been happier (or as happy) with a workstation. But the lack of sequencer is probably the most disappointing. There is some rudimentary sequencing ability in the ModFX, but it hardly takes the place of a full-up sequencer.

Ease of Use
Before I received it, took a few hours to read the manual. And I'm sure glad I did. Mostly the keyboard is very intuitive, with one caveat: read about the sound model first. There are 3 partials (oscillators) OR 1 acoustic instrument to a tone, 4 tones to a live performance, and 2 performances, 1 solo tone, and 1 percussion tone to a registration (a saved preset). If you don't know that, you're lost. The manual has been able to answer any lingering questions I've had so far, although mostly it's intuitive. It's meant to be adjusted quickly in a live setting, so most of the important stuff is right at your fingertips.

Quality
It's pretty sturdy. Nothing really surprising.

Value
I bought this as a "blemished" item for about $2800. I couldn't find a single mark on it though--looked as good as new. Definitely recommended for saving some serious cash. At the full $3500, though, I might have to think twice. The Kronos looked like a nice workstation, and the Motif also had very nice articulation.

Manufacturer Support
Didn't need manufacturer support--I have no idea why that's a mandatory rating field.

The Wow Factor
I really am wowed by the sound quality. I can hardly imagine a bad sound coming out of this thing. Pick a sound at random and just start playing--no matter the sound, you'll want to keep going.
