Capture the classic crunch of an original Orange amp. The OR50H churns with 50 watts of tube-driven power and tone.

Close your eyes and think back to the classic guitar tones of the early '70s. Chances are you're hearing riffs from greats like Pete Townshend and Jimmy Page. Now flash forward 40 years and imagine an amp head that captures these very tones with the added versatility of modern guitar innovation. The Orange OR50 is exactly that: a modern rock amp with all the tone of an original Orange head.

All-Tube Orange Tone

The OR50 does an incredible job bringing the tones of Orange classics like the early '70s OR80 or "pics only" head to a distinctly modern format. A complement of two EL34 power tubes and three 12AX7 preamp tubes drive this bad boy with the massive amounts of punch and headroom so closely associated with Orange. The addition of a third 12AX7 preamp tube adds another gain stage for even more saturation and blissful breakup potential. Plug into virtually any speaker cabinet and shake the room with 50 watts of vintage British power. The all-tube signal path lays the groundwork for plenty of sweet harmonics and overtones, with the versatility to churn out sparkling cleans as well.

Versatile and Innovative Controls

Take full control over the OR50H's extensive tonal palette with a set of intuitive onboard features. Master volume and gain knobs invite endless tweaking between levels and experimentation with headroom and breakup. The master volume can disengaged via footswitch for an even purer single-channel signal path, while a three-band EQ invites further read more customization of your tone. Perhaps most intriguing is the inclusion of an "HF Drive control." As this nifty knob is turned clockwise, it adjusts the amp's presence while injecting the signal with an extra punch of power amp gain. The result is a tidal wave of classic Orange amp power for those moments when normal overdrive needs a little extra push.

Orange OR50 Guitar Amplifier Head

Orange Amplification celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2008 with the issue of an extremely limited edition amp: the OR50H. Due to overwhelming public demand, Orange Amplification have decided to re-introduce it. In 1972 Orange launched an amp that defined their sound. It was dubbed the 'Pics Only' due to the absence of any text, instead using pictures only on the front panel of the amp. The OR50H owes more than a nod to this vintage legend; from the method of its construction, to the blues and rock tone, and even the cosmetics. Featuring a traditional single channel with a three stage gain section, the real weapon in the OR50s arsenal is the HF Drive control. This is two controls in one! As you turn the control clockwise you will hear the power amp presence increase while adding an extra dimension of power amp gain. Along with a foot-switchable master volume, this is truly one of the most versatile single channel amps ever created.

I'm writing this review after owning the head for a few months now. The OR50 is great, I run it through an Orange 1x12 for practice at home. I'm able to run the master volume between 9 and 1 o'clock at home because the single 12 inch speaker attenuates volume pretty well compared to a larger cabinet. The character of the amplifier, and this is very important, seems to come from the master volume and where it's set. If the master volume is set below 9 o'clock, the amp has a mean but less clean sound even if the gain is rolled back. I run my gain just above 12 o'clock and with my guitars volume I can go from clean to dirty easily provided the master volume is high enough. If I need more juice I'll click on my MXR micro boost. There are no features to this amplifier. It'll force to play guitar better too. Delays sound good through the front end too so the lack of an effects loop isn't a feature I miss. The HF drive is fantastic. Unlike most presence controls that can get harsh when set to high the HF drive just get's better the more you add to it. I like the Orange heads over the similarly priced Marshall heads for many reasons but one important reason is that I'm always tweaking stock Marshall style heads to get it to a sweet spot but the Orange amps seem to just sound good with the EQ set flat. This past weekend I got to finally hear the OR through a 4x12 Sound City cab loaded with Fanes and I can't get that sound of my head. It's really good and if lost or stolen I'd sell my read more car to afford another OR50. It's just that good.
