Novation Peak Polyphonic Synthesizer

Scale the heights of polyphonic synthesis with the Novation Peak synthesizer, an 8-voice desktop beast with aftertouch, FM, modulation, and on-board effects.

The Novation Peak is an eight-voice desktop polyphonic synthesizer with three New Oxford Oscillators for each voice. The oscillators sound completely analogue by being high-quality NCOs (Numerically-Controlled Oscillators), but gain the flexibility of the digital domain with 17 digital wavetables. They can also become a linear FM source using either the analogue-sounding NCOs or digital wavetables -- so are able to cross-modulate in an recursive loop.

Watch as Peak recreates the famous sounds of Vangelis' "Blade Runner" film score:

The synth has a resonant multi-mode analogue filter for each voice, and three distortion points for each voice -- pre-filter, post-filter and global -- in an analogue signal chain. Peak is capable of receiving polyphonic aftertouch, which puts expression right at your fingertips. Reverb, delay and chorus effects are at one's disposal, and there is also an on-board arpeggiator.

The modulation system puts a 16-slot modulation matrix and 16 direct assignments in the main controls, cleverly arranged for intuitive patch design and sound editing. There are three ADSR envelopes and two LFOs for each voice, and more elaborate movements and secondary 'via' assignments are made just a few menu button presses away. In addition, two animate buttons give live performers instant one-touch transformation of patches.

Peak connects read more to modular systems via a CV modulation input, and has MIDI I/O on five-pin DIN ports, so other MIDI gear can be connected. Via USB, Peak can be plugged into Mac or PC, where unlimited patches can be kept using the Components software.

Novation Wavetable Editor

The Wavetable Editor unleashes the power of the wavetable oscillators. It features drawing tools and a Live Edit mode, so you can draw your own oscillator shapes and preview them in real time. Audio import lets you load in your own audio to be used as the oscillator waveform. Included is a curated selection of space-themed audio from the NASA sound library, plus exclusive content from production giants Noisia.

What's New in Peak Firmware v2.0?

In Novation's biggest update for Peak, firmware update v2.0 brings in essential improvements and a multitude of features across stereo controls, modulation, unpredictability, and effects, that give you powerful tools to shape your sound.

Stereo: New spread modes, panning per voice, and panning in the mod matrix give additional control and allows for sound design in the stereo field. Now you can create bigger, wider, and more intricately textured soundscapes

Modulation and unpredictability: Create deeper and more experimental sounds with new mod destinations, noise as a mod source, and additional LFO 3 and 4 parameters. Animate Envelopes and Arpeggiator Chance open more creative performance possibilities.

Effects: New effects, including Chorus Modes, Flanger, and Phlanger add new tonalities. Additional effects modulation destinations open up more experimental sound design. A new Lo-Fi delay mode enables a more vintage style sound.

Bug Fixes: The firmware update v2.0 includes a number of bug fixes. The full details can be found in the release notes.

I saw the youtube videos from Novation, mylarmelodies and other and generally I know something good when I hear it...I bought this synth on a great hunch! There was something abrasive about its character that I instantly loved. I find it fitting for the sound I am after. I have lots of synthesizers including DSI Prophet 12 and the REV2. I have owned Prophet 6, Matrix Brute and Tempest. I have lots of synths to reference this Novation Peak synth against. For instance, I also own an DeepMind 12 Desktop, my Virus TI2, Radias, Waldorf Blofeld and MOOG Modulars. This synth has a harsh character that I need in my sound. Its a pleasant grainy phatness that to my ears sounds like a good tape saturation/distortion effect. It comes from the low end of the gritty oxford oscillators. We have three to choose from here and they sound crisp because they are oversampled at 21 MHz. So it is a good thing...I find the sounds simply better and super clean/clear among all the poly's that I have including the Dave Smiths. Of course it is not at the caliber of a DSI, but you can go crazy with this synth in the mod matrix or you can stay simple and classic vintage so it is a win...win...I'm looking to find flaws, but ohter than the lack of software support, I love it so far. The FM modes are a big thumbs up! Its definitelly a keeper and wider and grittier sounding in my opinion than its newest rival from Behringer.
