Neumann TLM 107 Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone

Sing into the modern Neumann! This 5-pattern large-diaphragm condenser captures everything from vocals to drums with pure accuracy, plus an airy 8 kHz boost.

With the TLM 107 multi-pattern condenser, Neumann continues to live up to its name as one of the best microphone manufacturers in the world. Aside from its transparent, pristine audio capture, the TLM 107's best feature is its universal applicability. Having any one of five polar patterns at your disposal makes this condenser microphone a monster of a multifaceted recording tool. And because the TLM 107 handles a maximum sound pressure level of 153 dB SPL -- with its -12 dB pad engaged -- you'll be able to record belted vocals, drums, horns, or any other loud instrument without concern of distortion. Plus, all of the TLM's features can be easily controlled with a single navigation switch.

See what's new and different about the TLM107 in this video from Neumann:

5 Pickup Patterns

The Neumann TLM 107 gives you five polar patterns -- omnidirectional, wide-angle cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid, and figure-8 -- making it a versatile microphone for pretty much any recording situation you can think of. The frequency range is well-balanced for all five patterns; this isn't just strictly a vocal microphone.

Nearly Flat Response with Airy Boost Above 8 kHz

The TLM 107 captures from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with a response that remains remarkably flat up to 8 kHz, giving you a true-to-life sound when you hit "playback." Engage the switchable low-cut for a gentle roll-off starting at 100 Hz or 40 Hz. You get a little boost starting at 8 kHz, centered around 13 kHz -- that read more high-end minimally-colored presence that's part of the sought-after Neumann sound.

Low Self-Noise and High SPL Handling

TLM stands for "transformerless microphone," which, in turn, means less unwanted noise. The self-noise of the TLM 107 is only 10 dB, so the only sound you'll hear will be what's going on in the room as you record. Also, this microphone handles a remarkably high sound pressure level of 141 dB SPL -- which can be pushed to 153 dB SPL using the TLM's switchable pad -- so you won't have to worry about vocals, drums, guitars, or any instruments being too loud during your recording session.

Ultimate Simplicity in Operation

You might expect a microphone with so many features to be cumbersome with switches, but the TLM 107's five polar patterns, pads, and low-cut filters are all accessible from a single circular switch on the microphone's back. Each setting is indicated by the LED lighting system that shuts off ten seconds after your settings have been selected. The switch and lights are located on the back of the TLM 107 so you don't have to worry about your vocalist or instrumentalist getting distracted.

Neumann TLM 107 Condenser Microphone

Multi-faceted versatility, no-compromise sound and innovative operation: With five directional characteristics and a novel operating concept, the Neumann TLM 107 provides sound without any coloration. Featuring equally impressive level handling and low self-noise, it captures everything from the softest whisper to thundering drums.

Classic proportions combined with attractive styling and fresh ideas -- the TLM 107 perfectly embodies the Neumann philosophy: Innovation based on tradition. Far from evoking vintage or retro nostalgia, the standard-setting TLM 107 represents an impressive, modern studio microphone. Its extensive performance spectrum and high-precision reproduction, very close to the original, make the TLM 107 universally applicable, opening up the widest freedom in mixing and post-production.

Neumann Engineering

The innovative sound transducer, which was designed especially for this microphone, is impressive with its outstanding impulse fidelity. The great consistency of the five polar patterns, omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-8, with the intermediate patterns wide-angle cardioid and hypercardioid, is also unusual for a large-diaphragm capsule. The TLM 107 provides optimal sound not only for the cardioid setting; it also ensures maximum precision over the entire frequency range for all of the other directional characteristics. The sound always remains balanced, with an almost linear reproduction up to 8 kHz, and a slight boost in the highest frequencies that lends presence and freshness to the voice. Here particular attention has been paid to the natural reproduction of speech sounds, especially the critical 's' sound. The grille is acoustically optimized for low sensitivity to pop sounds. In addition, the sound transducer is edge-terminated, with both diaphragms at ground voltage. Specifically, this ensures considerably reduced sensitivity to dust and humidity.

No-Compromise Sound Design

Transformer-less circuitry permits a high degree of linearity and a large dynamic range. The self-noise of only 10 dB-A is practically inaudible, while at the same time, the TLM 107 features high level handling. The maximum sound pressure level of 141 dB SPL can be increased to 153 dB SPL via pre-attenuation (Pad). This enables the TLM 107 to transmit the sound of even the loudest instruments without distortion. The Low Cut settings of Linear, 40 Hz, and 100 Hz are precisely adapted to practical recording situations. Without side effects, the 40 Hz setting cuts interference noise below the range of fundamental tones (where 41 Hz is the frequency of the double bass open E string), while the 100 Hz setting is optimized for speech and vocals (where 100 Hz corresponds to the lowest notes of a baritone).

Innovative Operating Concept

For the first time, all of the microphone switch functions are controlled intuitively via a navigation switch. A visual highlight is the illuminated pattern display in the chrome ring, while the Pad and Low Cut status is displayed by LEDs to the left and right of the switch. In order not to distract singers, the switch and display are located on the back of the microphone. After ten seconds, the displays are turned off automatically.

Delivery Package

The TLM 107 is available in the colors matte nickel and black. A stand mount (SG 2) is included.

This thing is fantastic. I own a 251 clone, some 67 clones with GE Tubes, a u47fet clone, a pair of 414's, a pair of TLM102's and a variety of other ribbons and dynamics with which to compare against, not to mention I've sung on a variety of high end mics in studios for jingles and other recorded projects requiring everything from rock to r&b vocals on them. This thing is high end. It captures what is sent into it and spits it out in a musical way. It is a great mic to use when you want to reveal the good your preamp has to offer. It really does a great job in bringing out the positives in any decent preamp. It likes to shake hands with good equipment. So far I've had the luxury of testing it out on a Dizengoff D4(Redd47 inspired pre), a Burl B1, a 1073 clone and a Vintech 1272. Every subtlety that each preamp is capable of is brought out and slightly enhanced by this mic. I really love this mic as a great all-arounder with a decent lean in the direction of flattery. A great empty canvas that works great with a variety of different preamps. Mine is staying with me forever.
