I chose this mic based on a sampling of a 19 mics here: http://recordinghacks.com/media-downloads/kick-drum-shootout-samples/All my experience is with my band playing gigs in clubs and outside. I have used a couple other mics supplied by our past 2 drummers. The MXL compares well to the Audix one drummer had, a CAD (did not like). Used an AKG D20 recently also. Did not have much time to set it and it was on a skin with no hole, so the mic was not in the drum. Based on the sampling and past experience, I like the fullness the MXL gave. Some sounded lacking in some frequencies in the samples I do not try to get a deep boom as that in a disco song from the kick. I try to keep it more natural. The MXL was easy to dial in with the channel EQ (Allen & Heath board). No compression used and I got what I thought was a deep full tone with just a touch of ring to it. The mic proved sensitive to positioning to the beater head which I think makes it a flexible mic for getting the tone you want. I did take a moment to play with the EQ settings. The mic can get very deep or rather thin so I think it is a flexible mic that can cover a range of tones for a kick drum. One last thing, all this is based on the sound of our PA which uses Bill Fitzmaurice T39 subs and OT12 tops. My prior set up was with QSC K12 and Ksubs. The BFM's are much clearer and drive harder so your experience with this MXL mic might differ in a live situation.
