Marshall DSL40C Guitar Combo Amplifier (40 Watts, 1x12")

No longer available at zZounds
Plug into classic Marshall character with the DSL40C. This 40-watt, two-channel combo delivers the goods with two EL34 power tubes and a Celestion speaker.

The Marshall DSL40C is a sturdy, gig-ready 40-watt workhorse boasting two EL34 power valves, a Celestion speaker, and the exact same front and rear panel features as the DSL100H -- including the Triode (Half Power) option which drops the DSL40C's output to 20 watts.

Combine the world-renowned EL34-driven power stage of the 1959 Super Lead Plexi (SLP) head with a dual channel valve preamp, giving you two footswitchable super leads in one. Then add a studio-quality digital spring reverb, plus extra preamp gain that can take you into JCM800 2203 territory and far beyond, and you get the DSL: Dual Super Lead. The DSL40C delivers famed Marshall tone in a 40-watt, 1x12" combo form, housing a custom-voiced Celestion speaker.

The DSL40C features two footswitchable channels (footswitch supplied) named 'Classic Gain' and 'Ultra Gain' -- each with two modes, selectable via a front-panel button. As their names imply, each channel has a very different character. Classic Gain takes you from a 1959 style clean to the snarl of a JCM800 2203, and everything in between via its Clean/Crunch mode button. 'Ultra Gain,' on the other hand, takes you from a hot-rodded 2203 vibe to an even higher gain response with additional mid-boost, via its Lead 1/Lead 2, mode switch.

Both channels share a passive three-band EQ with controls for Bass, Middle and Treble. The Equalization section also features a 'Tone Shift' button which, when activated (pushed in), shifts out the mid frequencies -- making the amp read more ideal for brutal, modern metal tones, especially when combined with high gain settings. Each channel also has its own individual reverb level control for the built-in studio quality digital spring reverb, This effect can be switched on/off via the supplied footswitch.

In the power section, you'll find controls for resonance and presence. Resonance adds a variable bass boost to your sound without muddying it up, while the presence adds high end. The ability to select either full output power or half-power via the Pentode/Triode switch on the rear panel, adds further to your DSL's already impressive feature set. The tonal and gain versatility makes the DSL40C a superb and flexible performance tool for today's most demanding playing situations.

About the Dual Super Lead Series

When the JCM2000 Dual Super Lead (DSL) series of amps was introduced in 1997, they were received with open arms and glowing compliments by the guitar loving public and press alike. In fact one of the biggest American guitar magazines described the DSL100 as possibly "the best Marshall ever. It combines the best tonal qualities and features of both modern and vintage Marshall amps in one package." After an extremely successful and long life, the JCM2000 series was replaced by the JVM series in 2007, which has also gone onto great success and critical acclaim. That said, there's still a great deal of respect and demand for Dual Super Leads, with one of the UK's most popular guitar magazines recently referring to the DSL100 as "the go-to rock amp."

First, and honorable mention to zzounds! I ordered this amp on 09/27/15 and on 09//30/15 I was unpacking it! I finally got the chance to crank it a little yesterday and experiment with the different sounds. All I can say is wow, talk about versatility! I played everything from chickin' pickin country to smooth blues to thrash (hardcore) metal, and this amp covered it all.

Sound
I love the clean/classic crunch channel, and the best clean I have ever had and the accompanying reverb is perfect for me. On the OD, overdrive one is perfect, overdrive 2 was a little fizzy, but I read at Marshall forums that this will fade at high volumes, and if not, someone posted a mod if I need it. Anyway, the reverb on the OD channel is outstanding with great depth. The only tip I can offer to make it sound better is if you are getting too much high on the OD channels, roll back the presence. I tried to follow the manual which said to depress the tone switch and and drop your mids; that didn't work enough for my taste, but when I rolled back the presence that did the trick.

Features
The one thing about this product that could be better is the footswitch. You can switch from clean/classic gain to ultimate gain, but not between OD 1 and OD 2. I think if they fixed that problem it would be a perfect package.

Ease of Use
Well, I guess that depends on one's level of curiosity or patience. I experimented for read more about three hours with different sounds and settings and had a blast. My guitar is a custom fender style with a mahogany body which provides killer sustain. It is loaded with SD Hot Rodded pups, and a fender single coil in the middle. No matter what amp I play on I have plenty of versatility, but this Marshall completes the package; they were made for one another!

Quality
I am not sure about the reliability yet, but it is solidly built; it looks like it could take a beating. I would think that it should last at least the two year warranty period.

Value
Compared to the price I have paid for inferior products (such as my Peavey Valveking), yes, this amp is worth every penny. The features and versatility on this amp are outstanding!

Manufacturer Support
Haven't needed their assistance as of yet.

The Wow Factor
What I really like about this amp in regards to appeal is the Pentode (full power) Triode (half power) switch. It performs well either way, but if you want to keep the volume down and still get great sound, this feature makes that possible.

Musical Background:
I have been playing guitar for 33 years. I have played live, but mainly jam with friends.

Musical Style:
Thrash/heavy metal, rock/southern rock, blues, jazz, country, and gospel; basically, whatever I am in the mood for at the moment
