This is the amp to have!! For me personally this is the exact sound I'm looking for! I have tried the original, the Slash version, the 2555x reissue and all have one problem...you can't turn them up to get 'the sound.' These amps are old school and require a voulme of at least 6 to unlock the juice! If you play live, this simply will not work in most clubs..you can try a power soak but to my ears, there is something non organic about that...let the ponies run, I say! Enter the solution: a 20/5 watt version. My thoughts are can the 5 watt mode and rock the 20! Now, finally the gigging musician's amp! The 20 watts is more than loud (you'll be very suprised) but not to the point where it is offending everyone including your soundman saying you're throwing off the mix. I have heard so many neg. things..i.e. "only 80's....ac-dc...etc." but that could NOT be more incorrect, these amps have a classic tone to be sure but very versitile. The sweetest part of this amp is the inherient "sound" but the fact that ALL the knobs have an incredible tone shaping ability...duh, but seriously, you will not find an amp like this one that has such an influence on tone with the stock EQ section! Also, at different volumes, the EQ will change...you may need to apply more-less, etc. and the relationship between controls is amazing how they can complement each other but you must be careful because they can also wreck each other. This can be frustrating at first but it shows the amp has it's own blood! read more You can get your own signature tone with some patience and trial. This amp will definatly stand out if the mix but I can say this: it is very picky about speakers...the cabs they pair them up with are vintage 30's in the 2x12-4x12 cabs and a G12m (greenback) in the combo. I personally experimented with MANY different speaker combinations and found a 4x12 loaded with 2 Vintage 30 and 2 G12m (diagonally) gives the best sonic bang for the buck! The effects loop is also a jem...quiet and smooth! Some will complian that you can't effectively use both channels as in: set up for crystal clean then distortion in real time at a gig....not totally true....but a fair complaint. This will depend on what YOUR taste is...This is how I set mine up....presence 4...bass 8....mid 6...treble 5...output master 6...lead master 4...input gain 6.....20 watt setting with 4x12 (2vintage 30...2green backs) I use a micro amp boost in the FX loop to push my solos. and the clean and dirty channels work just fine...I make sure the dirty channel has first dibbs on tone and the clean channel is satisfactory....if the clean is too hard to dial in, I'll A/B amps...sweet! I use a Gubson Les Paul and it's off to the races!!! Try it, you won't be dissapointed!!
