MXL V67Q Stereo Condenser Microphone

No longer available at zZounds
Plug this stereo microphone into your two-channel audio interface to capture the spacious stereo image of a live performance. Custom XLR cables are included.

MXL is proud to announce an addition to the V67 series, the V67Q Stereo microphone. This mic is the perfect addition to the home recording or studio environment. A fixed 90 degree XY pattern delivers a spacious stereo image, but also minimizes loss when translating to mono. The width can be adjusted later with panning if desired, as the left and right signals are delivered on separate balanced XLR connectors. The open tonality of the microphone compliments close micing by capturing the natural reverb of a room, provides an easy solution for drum overheads, and fits nicely under the lid of a grand piano.

If this mic lasts a year or two before falling apart or a channel stops working I'll be happy. I've already played around with this mic enough to know that having a high quality stereo mic will be an excellent addition to my home studio.

Sound
I bought this mic to use as a stereo drum overhead and it sounds fantastic! The frequency response is flat and accurate, I haven't heard any distortion or breakup, and it's pretty versatile.

Features
For an entry level stereo mic this is a great product. I really wish the mic had a -10db and/or an 80hz switch(s). Even if it would've added $20 I think it'd be worth the extra cost. This does come with a

Ease of Use
Well, it's pretty straight forward. Plug the multi-pin end into the mic and the left and right XLR cables in to two open channels then pan left and right.

Quality
The diaphragms were positioned 90º from one another, but not seated correctly in the mic. They were leaning to one side and actually touching the metal mesh. I had to (very carefully) take the mic apart and reposition them myself. I'm not sure if not adjusting them would have had any impact on the sound since I did this before even plugging the mic in. Ever so often the right channel cuts in and out. I'm fairly certain this is due to a bad connection between XLR cables and not me tampering with the capsules.

Value read more
Overall value is OK at best. This is a good entry level mic for those of us who are curious as to what a stereo mic is all about without spending $800+ on a more expensive model. Although, if I could go back in time, I'd skip on this mic and go straight for the Revelation Stereo. Yes it's MUCH pricier, but I think it'd be worth it in the end.

I own several MXL products and have never had to contact customer support.

The Wow Factor
Low cost. Cheaply built. But an overall good sound and a good introduction into stereo mics.
